The Hobbit can easily be split into two movies. All it takes is expansion on things that were mentioned but never went into great detail as it was a childrens book.

I think that would be horrible. As if Tolkien needs re-writing! It's just a lame way of making more money... What they should have done is not have had a LotR trilogy but made it into six books as Tolkien originally intended. Then they wouldn't have had to change things so dramatically (and badly).

Surprisingly, I am extremly excited about this! At least PJ's part of it.. Though the fact that he isn't directing it does concern me a bit... TORN says the reason is beacuse he's too busy and doesn't want to make fans wait. But I, for one, would wait for him! :-D
And I don't like the idea of a a "Hobbit sequal". :yuck: Just another way to make more money, I guess... :disgust:

Tolkien never was re-written for the trilogy?
The movies are all word for word Tolkien?
Why is it so different to expand on things for The Hobbit?

P.S The Lord of the Rings novel was intended to be one volume. The cost of making it at the time was too high. So Tolkien was persuaded to break it into three.

I like the idea of a hobbit sequel solely because the hobbit is packed with information, and it would give them less of a chance of having to cut stuff out.

Yeah, I agree with what you said. I'd rather have it take a bit more time and be done well. And also I don't like the idea of a sequel to the Hobbit either. I think it's not necessary. Of course it's always necessary to change things if you make a film from a book, but I think you should try to stay as close to the books as possible without disregarding that fact that it's supposed to be a film (I'm not sure how to express what I actually mean, sry.. )

No, he was (obviously). That's precisely what I'm saying. I don't want them to destroy another one...

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy the films, but only as much as I do because I saw them BEFORE I read the books and they are what got me interested in them. But as time goes on I get less and less fond of them because of so much they just utterly ruined.

Ah yes, that does ring a bell. But the stories are broken up into six parts and I was fairly certain that Tolkien wished them to be published that way but the publisher decided it was cheaper to put two books in one.

well, I wouldn't say that they ruined the books. There have definitely been some changes made I don't agree with at all (like Faramir's character), but still I think they demonstrate the themes and the atmosphere of the book very well; especially when you compare them to earlier film versions of LotR. But of course, that's just my opinion..

No, I agree with that. But look at Arwen's character and all the characters that they left out. I love Arwen's character, but I actually like it more in the book (as small as it is). Arwen just wasn't mean to do all the things she did in the films. At least I don't think so.

And definently about Faramir. Bad decision making. What they ought to have done is made Arwen's character the way it was supposed to be and KEPT the romance between Éowyn and Faramir.

Sorry, getting off topic here.

Unless they're going to use story from the end of The Silmarillion (which I don't think would make a particularly good movie) then it's just going to get stupid. I don't want them to turn this into another Star Wars franchise where it just gets more ridiculous with prequels and out of order films.

Yeah, I know what you mean...I'm like "Excuse me? What "Hobbit sequel"? THERE ISN'T ONE." But other than that... *dances unabashedly* :D

I think the Hobbit would be too rushed without a sequel.

I don't think so. They didn't break the three Lord of the Rings books up so why would they break up The Hobbit to make it less rushed (unless of course for more money...). I'm sure it will be another 3 hour film.

If PJ's doing it, I expect it to be a three hour one. Not that I'm complaining. I'm wondering what Smaug will look like!

Same here. I adore Smaug and just love dragons in general. I'm sure if Weta does the effects it will look great. Let's hope they don't switch to someone else though. A lot of the cgi in some newer movies looks really BAD for some reason.

I was beginning to think I was the only one happy and positive about this.
:P

I'm very very excited about the possibilities. I haven't felt this excited about an upcoming movie since Lord of the Rings got the green light [The PJ version of course lol]. All the excitement of casting rumours and wondering how Smaug will look and sound.

Squeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
:bounce:
