That Namarie thread made me think, over the years I've run into some really interesting music written by LotR fans, or even written for something entirely different but LotR-ish in sound. Here's some of it, you might enjoy listening:
Lineage
Lineage, video game music by Bill Brown, isn't written for Lord of the Rings, but it has obvious influences and is generally really nice to listen to. Sprunk gave me that link.
Fellowship Going South
Scroll down to Fellowship Going South. A Filk Song by Leslie Fish, I expect from about the seventies, though I may be off. It is written based on LotR, and is one of my very favorites.
Edgen
I found this Justin R. Durban fellow's "Rise and Fall of Middle Earth" through TORn fan music, and his site has grown up a lot since I first found it, but he writes generally fantasy-themed cinematic music. It's nice to listen to.
The Hunt for Gollum
Click "Soundtrack" to listen to two pieces from the soundtrack for this fan film, composed by Chris Bouchard. It's decent stuff, obviously written as a continuation of Howard Shore's themes, but I think worked to fit the cues of the fan film. Really well done.

Enjoy the music! And if you have any other composers or bits of music to share, please do.

There's The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by Mask, an electronic/synthesizer type group. There's Blind Guardian, Battlelore and Summoning for the metal inclined, and there's a band called Lothloryen that did a song called The Hobbit Song.
There's also a couple classical pieces but I can't remember what they are. :duh:

Neat! Is David Arkenstone's last name intentionally Arkenstone?

Some of the other things I put in the same context as LotR music are pieces like Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite and Holsts Planets, purely for their cinematic feel.

He have made music for about 20 years under that name, and his wife is also named Arkenstone (so it's his actual surname).
But it's probably a taken name from when he was younger and not birth surname.

One of his children is named Valinor btw. :D

More David:
The Dragon's Breath <--- one of my favorites by him!!
Angels In The Snow
Song of the Silkie
El Dorado
Magic Forest

Nightwish is a finnish metal band and one of thier songs called 'Elvenpath'. It mentions Bilbo, the rings of power, and the dark lord. It's awesome if you like that kind of music.. :)
