I have been wondering... What types of instruments do you think have a "middle earth" feel and sound?

I know a lot of the modern instruments were used in the sound track and I love the soundtrack but you have to be very good to make those instruments sound that nice and middle enarthy in my opinion.

The dwarves song in the first hobbit movie is really middle earthy sounding to me and for instruments I always tend to think lute... I guess more towards the medieval instrument types.

Yeah I agree, Medieval instruments do fit the best. Instruments that were used in songs like the Shire theme and the horns used for Gondor and the Fellowship themes. Also violins like what was used for the Rohan theme.

*nods*. I guess it would be a little different ensemble for each culture. It would be neat if Tolkien had invented instruments for the different races. Men would be easiest to assume the medieval instruments to but surely there would have to be other instruments unique to the other races you would think.

I could see the elves doing a lot of the wind instruments that have a mellow tone I think.

I think harps were prevalent in Rivendell as were lutes. I kind of relate the nyckelharpa with Rohan, with maybe a hurdy gurdy being in Gondor, with the elves responsible with all of their development.

That would make sense, I didn't think of harps. The nyckleharpa looks like a lot of fun to play! I'll have too look one up on youube or something to see what they sound like.
