i think that you should be able to find a good mix between hack and slasha and an exploration themed game. Exploration would help with the sory line of "searching" but hack and slash would provide the action-though hack and slash gets repetitive verry quickly

It sounds great. I wish that you speak more about your video game.

Hello all,
I've got really bad news.
I've been reading up and I can't release the game unless I have a license from the Saul Zaentz Company for the books and New Line Cinema for the movies. It's a major let down. I worked so hard to make this, and now I can't really do anything with it.
I was really looking forward to releasing it. I had written an entire storyline, and the levels were shaping up rather nice.
I am so sorry that I got you guys so excited about this.
I should have looked into the legal stuff before I started posting.
Once again, I am really, really sorry. Please forgive me :-(

I am by no means a lawyer or anything, but people can write fanfics, spoofs and parodies based on or using the plot of LotR, right? So (you'd have to check) maybe it would be ok as long as it's not for money.

Or you could wait a few decades until LotR becomes public domain...

I thought that too, but I e-mailed a lawyer named Catherine Blackburn and got this response:

Dear -name removed-,

Thank you for your e-mail.

Games rights in "The Lord of the Rings" are held by the Saul Zaentz Company in Berkeley, California, and New Line Cinema control the rights in their recent films. You should contact SZC with your request in the first instance. I fear, however, that they will not be able to help you, as the rights you would need are currently licensed on an exclusive basis to a games creator. If you do not get permission, then, unfortunately, it will not be possible to make your game available, even if for free.

Yours sincerely

Cathleen Blackburn
