What surnames have you translated into Sindarin or Quenya? That'd be interesting to see.

I *think* I've got it. I believe I translated 5 different surnames correctly.

The first surname simply means red. Thus I translated it Caran, which just means red, plain and simple.

The second surname means son of the red king. Born is another word for red in Sindarin, as in the color or temperature. Ar is used in the middle of words to denote a king or nobility. Also used is taur, but for the sound of the name Ar works better, I think. Finally, ion is son. Thus translated into Sindarin, the surname comes out to Bornarion.

Then there's a surname that means "gift of a son" or "son of the gift" more literally, since part of the surname comes from a nickname of a name meaning gift, and the other part means "son of." Using these ideas, I came up with Antion. "Ant" means "gift", and again "Ion" means "son"

Next was a name meaning peninsula. A peninsula is a neck of land. So I used Dor = land, place people live, and Iaeth, meaning neck. Doriaeth, peninsula, neck of land. :)

Finally was a surname meaning a wright, carpenter, or builder. That's as easy as red, Thavron.

Horray! I think I did it. Any suggestions if y'all know better on some of these are welcome. :)

On names translated into Sindarin or Quenya
Well Arwen Undomiel broken down is ar-wen-undomë-iel. Ar means noble, royal. Wen means maiden. Undomë means twighlight and iel is a feminine name suffix.

sorry if it's not a 'surname'.

Translating my Elvish surname (gathered from www.chriswetherell.com/elf/) is pretty easy. My surname is "Inglorion"-- which is broken up into Inglor, who was an Elven lord of the house of Gildor; and Ion, which means "son". So "Inglorion" would, naturally, mean "son of Inglor".
I'm not a guy, though...but loosely translated, I suppose it simply means "of the line of Inglor".

The meaning is the first step; you must know what the name means!
Then take the meaning of my name and used a dictionary. http://www.jrrvf.com/hisweloke/sindar/ is a great one. Though limited numbers of searches a day. :(

I know CoE also translates names by meaning, and I *think* they do surnames too.

That other link was a random name generator. It doesn't REALLY translate a name.

Interesting... I thought that was a compound of gwaith "people/troop" and lass "leaf". Though I could be wrong. Where did you find it? There's no attested word for 'princess' in Sindarin, though in Quenya it's aranel.
