That's kinda hard. There have been many kinds of fortresses. I guess Minas Morgul is cool when it's evil and when it's not. Minas Tirith is beautiful, but I wouldn't judge it by that. Depending on how many numbers you have, it looks like it might take a while to overtake all 7 levels. Hmmm...Isengard is to me not very tough, same thing with Cirith Ungol. Helm's Deep is okay, but it's weakness is easy to figure out. The mines, though, you can get loss, but despite the dwarves efforts' many still died. The bridge was a great way to keep enemy's off though.

I know I've posted in this thread before but I'd also like to say that next to Minas Morgul, Gondolin is definitely my favorite fortress!

Wow, old thread...
Minas Tirith was spectacular in the movies, but I also liked Helm's Deep. The great wall that had lasted through so many battles. Pity we got to see so little of the inside....

I agree, Ea. I'd have loved to have seen more of Helm's Deep.
I like Minas Tirith the best, but I loved Orthanc and Barad-dur, too.

Minas Tirith was marvelous, beautiful, mighty and royal! It's very hard not to like it. I think they captured it quite well in the movie, but I still wonder what living there must be like... all the different levels, everything is round and well... it's just a different design than most cities.

I noticed recently (like three times-through-LotR ago) that Minas Tirith is actually supposed to have a dark outer wall. Not white. Pretty interesting, I think.

It's supposed to be dark in the books?
Well, dark is certainly a practical color taking into consideration how the filthy orcs from Mordor always come knocking on it with their hideous weapons!!
But yeah, it is interesting, but since it's only the outer wall, the city itself would still give the impression of a White City for someone watching it from a distance.

Yeah. I think the actual quote is something along the lines of how the outermost wall (not the Pelennor wall, but the one around the first ring of the city) was built from the same dark stone as the tower of Orthanc. It went on about how the stone couldn't be broken except in some convulsion that would rend the very ground beneath it, etc.

Alright, makes sense since it is build as a fortress, so they'd want to make as strong as possible over artistic decorations.
But shouldn't we ralk a little bit about Helms Deep?
I have the impression this is quite big, and it has this great underground cave system...

yeah. A really, really, really big and gorgeous cave system that I very much want to see. I was very dissapointed that Tolkien never elaborated on Legolas and Gimli's visit to them after the War of the Ring. And in my opinion, PJ didn't do them justice in TTT. They looked too plain in the movie. I pictured them as looking more colorful in the book.

Oh gosh, that's hard to decide, because there are so many beautiful fortresses in Middle-Earth, but I'd say that my fav is Caras Galadhon. I also like Minas Tirith a lot though.. and Helm's Deep.. and Orthanc.. and Dol Amroth.. ooh soo many beautiful things in Middle-Earth.

I never really thought of Caras Galadhon as a fortress. It's more of just an ordinary city. If we were going for cities, I probably would've said Annuminas or Osgiliath.

Before the Battle for Middle-earth 2 came out I would have said Minas Tirith. But now it's a toss-up between Rivendell, Minas Tirith, Minas Morgul, and Gondolin.
