You can relate to everything that happens. Of course you can't throw a gold ring into a volcano today and save the world, but he presented a parallel world. It's easy to love something you can relate to or have feelings for.

Hehe, you can throw a gold ring into a volcano, though, (but I'd like to keep my finger) but sure, you wouldn't save the world that way... Yeah, I think you're right, you can relate to almost every part/character of the story...I sometimes walk through the forest and start thinking of wood elves or I pretend being a hobbit/ranger or a member of the fellowship, That sounds weird, I know, but LOTR affects my life...completely!

I know how that feels. On a field trip I was hiking in the Woods (Hawk Mountain) and pretended I was an Elf. My friend thought it was a little strange. She's read LOTR, but found the Uruk-Hai to be "Freaky Things" and that's why she doesn't like it. She really shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

Oh, yeah, I remember being on holiday in the mountains in Austria with my parents and a friend of mine last autumn....She's the only friend of mine here in Germany who's as obsessed as I am (actually the only 1 who likes LOTR) and we were walking around all day an we nearly drove my parents mad (and they really like LOTR VERY much) coz we were talking about LOTR all the time...we were looking around and always found something that could have been in LOTR like "oh, look! That mountain looks just like Charadras!" And I had my copy of the LOTR books in my bag and was carrying it around with me across half the mountain range!

I agree with everyone . Tolkein is so desciptive in his writing, that you feel like you are actually there experiencing everything the characters are experiencing like Frodo gradually being worn down by the ring, or Eowyn fighting valiantly in the Battle of Pelennor Fields. You feel like you are Sam's best friend and that you are not alone in this world. The places like Rivendell, Lothlorien, refresh you as if you were really there. The truths in the story are so great~ Friendship, compassion, love, darkness, light, good vs. evil~One is actually never the same after they read it. I know I'm not. Three cheers for Tolkein !
