I'm trying to build a "fairy cottage" in the backyard for the garden...and make it look like a Hobbit hole..its going to be fairly small, only 2 feet high or so..
Any ideas on how to get started?

I'd draw up what you want it to look like.

wow that's a really cool idea Starglass. I haven't got any experience with building, so I can't really help you, but I think what Ashwise says is quite a good idea.

I don't know if you want it with a hole or not.
I would create a mound of dirt that is basically the shape of a hill and plant grass overtop of it. Then, I would look at a picture from the movie and try to mimick it with little fences, a door, and such.

Hmmm... a hobbit house.
Cool!
I'm going to have to ditto what Smeag said.
I made some faerie houses before, just out of twigs, leaves, acorns, etc... but the next day a squirrely had stolen the acorn.

Never heard of a fairy house until just now... But Smeag's idea sounds good.
I'm not really a builder... I'm more of the person who sits back and watches sitting under an umbrella and a lawnchair with a magazine.

*gasp* I think there might be some help waiting for you at www.councilofelrond.com!! Click on "The Last Homely House" (somewhere in the nav-bar or in one of the sub nav-bars) and then scroll down. I'm not sure, but I remember coming across some stuff to make a real house look like a hobbit hole, maybe you could minimize everything (smaller items?) and make a fairy-sized hobbit hole!!! ^_^
