^No. Definitely not. :P Although I like Merry's full name, Meriadoc. That wouldn't make a bad middle name.

No, I guess not...but some dimwits (pardon the expression) would probably think it was "Mary attic" or something like that. :eyeroll:

:-D :-D

I think a few of the shorter names would be nice, like Elwe or Arwen.

Names we should NOT give our children:
Nob
Goldberry
Treebeard
Ghan-buri-ghan
Merry
Elrohir
Barliman
Orophin
And many more, of course. :P

Actually Elrohir is one I had in mind... :lost:

I like the idea of Tolkien names (middle names, anyway). I'd be wary of giving a kid an obviously Tolkien first name though, like one of the main characters or something overly Elvish, etc. The kid could get seriously teased or hate LotR.

I don't think I would submit my poor future children to a Tolkien name as their first name, but definitely as middle names for sure! I have plenty of Tolkien names I love that would work perfectly as middle names :)

In my sister's school there's a boy whose first name is Rohan. I'm not sure if they named him that knowing about Tolkien/LotR, but I still think it's pretty cool. xD

I would love to give my children Middle Earth-esque middle names. :)

This made me laugh...especially Ghan-buri-ghan. :-D

Also think about all dwarven names...none of them are very pleasant either. Bombur...Dwalin...Fundin. >___>;;

Hehe I knew a lot of boys named Rohan... it's a fairly common middle-eastern name :P

Wow, I never knew that. ^^

My initials spell 'ELF'! I is excited! lol...

I wish i had a LotR name...

I have a friend whose first name is Eowyn, except her parents (for 'pronunciation/spelling' reasons) spelt it 'Aowyn'. I is upset about that. I guess that was kinda smat or else everyone would be like 'Ee-O-wen' or 'you spell your name Aowyn?' but still.....

I'm not really into middle names, but if I ever had kids I would be thinking of something like:

Arwen
Eowyn
Luthien
Elessar
Anduin
Anduril

[I just like the sound of the last two, although they aren't people]

Because a middle name they can choose to use it or whatever. I don't think parents should give their kids first time for things THEY like.

i also know a girl whose name is eowyn...and i'm always searching for good Tolkien names that aren't too obvious that could be used for first names. might go with that middle-name thing though too...but i really really really like Laurelin as a first name, it's just so pretty!
and i've always wanted to pick names based on meaning, so finding a tolkien name that also means something...positive...as well as sounding pretty is also a challenge...

This is not a middle name as such, but back in the ...70s I think... there was this hippie commune house where all the people changed their last names to Kløvedal (Rivendell in English). :P

Aowyn just became a big sister and her baby brother's name is Balin! I was so envious of her parents. I crave a middle-earthy name.

I wouldn't enslave my poor future children to first names of LotR or Elvish, but I am seriously thinking about legally giving them Elvish translations of the middle names I choose... For example, if I wanted my son's middle name to be Emmet (oh, how I love that name :P) an Elvish translation he would be cursed with would be Mátamelcan according to this site, or I could translate it myself. Or my daughter with the name Destiny, a translation could be Maranwethiel. I think you catch my drift... I might want a shorter name though... I'll have to put more thought into this or my firstborn could have a name like Berthadhiell-Teithagliriel

Hmm it's been a year since I posted last. Well, I've been thinkingabout it and I really want to name my child something Lotr-ish but at the same time something that doesn't sound like the poor kid would be bullied to death... any ideas? :-)

Lol I've just read through this thread, the idea of naming a child Treebeard or Ghan-Buri-Ghan is way too hilarious!!! Middle names is a much more sophisticated idea:)

Ea: what about Samwise, it can always (obviously) be shortened to Sam, and of all the Sams I know none ever go by Samuel so the long version doesn't matter so much. Merry I think is also a fairly uncommon girls name, I had a history/geography teacher who called her daughter Merry (her full name was Merry Marmite Mistrano though....). I think Nordic sounding names like Freya always sound quite lotry too :)
