Does anyone here do costuming--particularly LotR costumes? I'm a budding seamstress myself, and I've been wanting to do a dress from the Lord of the Rings...any good hints? As of now, I'm just planning on adapting an existing pattern...but eventually I'd like to be able to make a pattern directly off the character's dress.

Also, good costume sites for LotR:

www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr

Does anyone have any other sites that are good?

Which Arwen dress did you make? I've been collecting ideas for an Arwen-inspired dress. It's my dream to get married in a medieval/LotR gown :)

With the release of The Hobbit in theatres less than a year away, I thought I'd revive this thread, because I am SO going to see the movie in costume. Not just the midnight showing--every single time I see it. XD

I love costumes, but I've never learned to sew. As a theatre major, one of my requirements is a Costume and Makeup course, but I can't take that until fall semester sophomore year because the class is only offered in the fall. So I can't really make my own costume. :( I've been trying to get a Hobbit-style costume of my own for YEARS, but every attempt has failed--even buying the fabric and giving it to my seamstress friend didn't work. She never made the dress and it was a waste of everyone's time and money.

What I do have is an undershirt and a skirt that I might be able to wear, but the skirt doesn't really fit. So I'm looking for a new one, in addition to a proper bodice, which I might get on Etsy, but I've never used it before so I'm a little wary. I'm just glad I have a whole year to search for things and save up to buy them!

So, how about the rest of you? Any big costume plans for the Hobbit premiere? Have you ever made, bought, or assembled a LotR costume for yourself? Discuss!

I have these patterns:

I've had them for about 6 years now... I planned on making one (I can't decide which one though) as soon as I've lost weight...
Although I've been saying that for the past 6 years.. :eyeroll:

But I am determined to be thin by my 21st birthday ( so I have until June to lose at least 100 pounds.. Wish me luck! ) so I might start making one late in the year to wear when I go to see the Hobbit for the first time.

I also have these: http://www.lotrfanshop.com/shopimages/c ... tumes-n148)-1621s.gifl.gif for some reason... I think I wanted the top right pattern but I can't remember now. However I might make the top left one for a friend who I'm planning on seeing the Hobbit with.

Also, if/when I make my dress, I'm taking it to New Zealand with me and walking up Mount Sunday in it. Yes I am!

I have those 3 patterns too! :P
My lil sis made the dress for me though cause I can't sew. lol!
She made the one on the right... with the sleeves and skirt a light cream color.

I'd like to wear a lotr dress to the Hobbit movie... haha but I'd be afraid of ripping it or something, cause it cost over $100 to make! :P

I can't sew either, well with a machine anyway, I can handsew decently well. I have been looking etsy to get some LOTR garb, more then costumes, so I can wear them more often. Maybe some custom LOTR garb eventually.

And to answer your question Arabella, Etsy is pretty good place shop, just be prepared to wait for your order if it is a custom one. :)

My lil sis is making me a LotR dress... again! :P
This time, it's an elf dress. The main part is plain green, and the sleeves are green lace with leaf designs on them.
I can't wait till it's finished! :P I might even wear it to the Hobbit movie when I see it in the theater! :P (as a Mirkwood elf) (who cares if people think I'm insane.... :P)
(And this dress only cost me $60 instead of about a hundred like the Eowyn one... hehe)

I am making an elven dress for The Hobbit. I just got the material (ya for dresses at thrift stores!). It will probably cost me $30 to make. The main part will be maroon with silver sleeves. It would be based on elven dresses seen in the movie, instead of from a strict pattern. I do wish that I had found blue velvet instead of maroon, but the dress I found is already so perfect that I will just go with that. I am excited about making it and wearing it. I will post pictures of my progress! :)

Oh the sleeves are beautiful! and i love the color. :D

I will post some pics once I get it halfway together. I do believe I could make a tutorial as I go, for other people.

Here is my concept drawing for my dress.

Image***

The "red" is actually maroon, and the "grey" is more silver. I wanted to keep the sleeves at a 3/4 length, as I personally don't like full length sleeves. They would be too big for me, especially if they are going to be more flowing.

Below the bust I want to be a silver sash, that I would tie in the back with a pretty knot. The dress would already fit me snug, so the sash would be more decoration. I thought about moving it down toward the waist Eowyn fashion, but not sure it would look good with the decorum on the top of the dress (which is already apart of the dress). Thoughts?

What do yall think about it so far?

***Subject to change due to operator error and amount of fabric*** :frust:
