Lembas, are you using coloured pencils? I got a Game of Thrones colouring book for Christmas and the designs are so intricate that I won't be able to use crayons.

I have been colouring for ages and have lots of different kinds of crayons...scented and glitter....among others.

Show us the finished page, Lembas, it looks really nice.

I always understood that you were supposed to use pencils... Unless you sharpened your crayons. Like you say, it seems just too detailed.

I use artist grade coloured pencils and fineliners for the details. Coloured pencils are the best because you can shade and blend the colours, I have Animal Kingdom and Tropical Wonderland books that are ridiculously detailed and I primarily use the coloured pencils for them too. I've seen the GoT book and I decided against buying it because it was very similar to the LotR one I've got, so if you have coloured pencils you'll be fine.

I haven't finished any more of the LotR pages yet as I don't get much time for colouring at the moment, work is too busy. I can share some animal ones though. If anyone is interested.

What are the fine liners?

Gosh... I know that story all too well... Work is always keeping people busy. But better that than not having work, right?

I would love to see some of the animal ones. It will help ease my mind since I don't get to do these myself. Lol

I should check my local bookstore and see what they have. I could likely order it if he doesn't have it.

Ah. So the fine liners are not pencil's but ink then?

Wow, you did really good on those lembes! I love how you blended the colors. That is one thing I don't feel like I am very good at. It is like all my edges are just sharp from one collor directly to the next. Blending is hard for me.

I'm pretty sure they're the same book, the Mumak illustration is in the Gandalf-cover book. I think it's just an alternate cover for an different edition.

I went on Amazon to see what they're offering and noted that a number of people are complaining that the colouring books are duplicates. There also seemed to be a number of complaints about the quality of the artwork.

The art is by no means John Howe/ Alan Lee standards. And there are some pages that aren't as good as others, Smaug, Thorin and Aragorn are disappointing, and there's a random one of butterflies too. But there are far more good ones than bad, there's some really cool Mordor and Saruman pages and there's a great illustration of eleven ships too. Everything in the shire and Hobbition is really cute aswell

Its not as intricate as some of the other colouring books out there, so colouring it is more like colouring a sketch rather than filling in cells, which may also be why some people don't like it so much. Also Middle Earth is predominantly green and brown so there's less opportunity to use as many colours too.

If you google image search 'Tolkiens world colouring book' you can see some of the inside pages. I suggest judge for yourself, rather than the Amazon reviews :)

Thanks for the information, Lembas. I will definitely check out the Google images.

As for the reviews on Amazon, I only use them as a guideline.

Thanks for the heads up Lembas, it saved me from buying the same book twice.

Using a different cover on a book but keeping the contents the same is done a lot. Tolkien books are a good example of this. It happens with magazines too. They publish the same edition but with a different movie star on as many as 4 covers for example.

When I worked in day care, I always encouraged the kids to use their imagination when colouring. If a child wanted pink grass, well, so be it. A purple sky? Go for it.

I would like to see Aragorn in shades of blue. Why be limited to what colours we use just because we think it is the *right* colour? Change it up!
