First, I would show Tolkien the LOTR films and then ask him if he thought they were good. I mean, it would be cool to know what Tolkien would have said if he had a chance to see the movies.

Tolkien rox my sox!

those are awsome ideas! I couldn;t come up with those! Wow! I hadn't even thought of showing him the films! Chrisotphr Lee has met him and quote "He came in and I thought I was staring at God"

Me? Heh, I'd probably be like:

:surprise:

"Ehh! Eeeep. Hehehehe. H- hi!!! Duuu.. umm... c- ca- an I h- have an aut- togra -aph? P- please?"

...And then faint dead away. :P

But if I had a bottle of smelling salts or something on me, I'd like to ask him about Tom Bombadil... what inspired him to write that character, and what he had in mind as to who he is. :)

That was so hilarious! But, to be honest, I'd probably do the same. Then I'd began to talk uncontrolably and poor guy would go insane :-D. No, not that much but ... I couldn't stop. :P

Once I got over the shock, I'd ask Professor Tolkien, "Did you and Mr. Lewis have something like an inside joke about Narnia and Middle-earth being connected?"

This is mostly because a friend and myself came up with this theory, then found evidence that perhaps they, Lewis and Tolkien, had the same theory in the book "That Hideous Strength" by C. S. Lewis.

:medieval: Yeah, I'm weird. :viking:

First I would say hello and then the questions would begin. I would have him answer every question that I have about M-e and it's history to the best of his ability. Then we'ed have a cup o' tea and I'd ask him to read some of my writing and get his input.

I think it'd be cool to ask him if there is anything about his work he regrets writing or would like to change. And also what other parts of Middle-Earth he would have explored in further books.

I would ask him to read me part of the Kalevala, and then Beowulf. We could have such a wonderful discussion about history and language! I could get his advice on Old English pronounciation.
I'd also really love to talk about his beliefs, and all those annoying people who insist upon his work being allegorical when he states clearly that it is NOT.

I would say, Thank you for introducing me to Middle-earth! What you wrote was amazing! Through reading your books, I can enter Middle-earth anytime I want! :bounce:

Nienor - great idea.

The first question to ask is: What did you mean when you had Legolas say he hadn't felt that young since he journeyed with "you children"?

That is the real question...

I'd ask him if he was really inspired by Shropshire, or if that's just rubbish invented by the local press. Then I'd ask him to teach me old English :)
