i know this is kind of a dumb question to ask, but what does everyone love about lotr? is it the adventure, the truths that are found in the book, the characters...? there has got to be something about this story that makes us so obsessed about it!
for me, i just love the story, and all that goes with it. i feel a part of the story and i feel like my own character that has just jumped right into the book with the other characters. also i love how indepth the story is. there are so many viewpoints and aspects of middle earth that it seems like a real place to me. when i'm feeling stressed out or anything, i can just read the book or listen to the music and i already feel better because i feel so connected with middle earth...i know that sounds loony, but i was wondering if anyone else felt the same?

I totally and completly agree with you! The aspects of the story are so amazing that it really just blows your mind. Like how can someone so small as a hobbit save the entire world? I esp like RotK, because there's so much character development.

The characters and the depth that Tolkien gave them are why I love LotR. Each character has there own personality and relationship with every other character. They each have a different story and destiny to fulfill, and they each contribute something different to the story.
I also love the many hidden truths that are hidden throughout the story;friendship, trust, love, hate, grief.
Last but not least, I love the descriptions of all the different places. They make Middle-earth alive and real in my imagination. When Tolkien describes Hobbiton I see there in my minds eye, all the little hobbits, the rolling fields, ripe vegetables, and the little hobbit holes.
Tolkiens work is a masterpiece!

Same here. I love how Tolkien was so descriptive of every person, place, and thing. I remember before i was introdused to The Lord of the rings i was a pop/celebrity fan and was into anything everyone elce was in. Now I only listen to the soundtracks and classical music. (Now I'm know by some of my friends as "The Elvish Green Bean".)
I too love all the hidden truths I find in it. (stuff that some action-movie fans still don't get.) Bravery, loyalty, courage, despair, longing, understanding, misunderstanding, vengance, foolishness, sorrow, the list goes on and on.

I have to agreee with Niresse. Tolkien is so descriptive that you see everything play out in your mind.

I love them for lots of reasons! I like how so many of the characters stick to what they're doing, they don't give up. I love how Tolkien makes heroes out of everyone, and how the shy, little-known hobbits become the heroes of the story. I love the friendship, love, loyalty, bravery. (I know this is sounding corny, but it's how I feel! lol) I like how there are little spots of humor in, but not at wrong places, ya know. I also love how Tolkien describes all the people and places, they come alive.

I have the exact same view points as the rest of you.
Rather....
...how can you not love the books, when they give you a whole new universe, a different world of adventure, to experience?

What I love at it is:
That all the things that happened are done with courage, friendship, hope and love. And that are the things that are really important in my life. Where would I be without my friends, without hope and love.
That's why I love the story.
Lord of the Rings made me to what I am and to how I am. And I'm graceful for that every day.

What I love about LOTR: EVERYTHING!!! All the characters (yes, even Sauron), the way the story is told/written, the things that happen, the languages and the different kinds of writings, the story itself, the world (it has become reality for me, don't tell me it doesn't exist, it's all so well described, there is so much said about it's and everyones history and how everything was created.... the different races, all the relationships, the love, the battles , THE HORSES, the journey (when you read the book you get the feeling to be there, you can exactly picture everything) and, actually, while reading aou're on some kind of journey, too... I could go on like that for hours, but I'll quit now (maybe I'll continue later)

I've been reading the book through again, and I am really beginning to appreciate the poetry of Tolkien's language. It's really amazing to read it slowly and let the words sink in. haha, but that's just the English teacher in me!

Then try to read it in german It's so sad, we have 2 translations of the book in Germany, and the old one is so awesome, while the new one is definately crap! And you can't buy the old one anymore! AARGH! (I'm lucky,my parents own 2 copies of the old translation, I own an english copy) But, well, my advice: No, read it in english It's much better
