...basically, did the movie clear things up for anyone? Like, you didn't really understand a part of the plot and it made more sense after watching the movies? I didn't quite get the whole "Spirit of Sauron bound to the ring" thing until Gandalf explained it to Frodo in fotr.

And on another note, did anyone like or not like a character, and then change your mind when you saw the movies? That happened to me with Faramir. I couldn't believe the way he was treating Frodo, and then in rotk when I saw his eyes when his father was speaking to him that way...it put things in a whole new light.

Anyone else?

Since I read the books after watching FotR and TTT the movies didn't make anything clear to me that hadn't been clear to me before. But I don't think they would have if I had read the books before except for what Aerlinniel already said about the relationship between Aragorn and Arwen.

Let me make sure I understand you correctly. You didn't like the character of Faramir in the book? You didn't understand him until you saw the film Faramir? Is this what you mean?

If I understand you correctly, then for me it is completely the opposite. See, I hadn't read that far in the books yet by the time the film came out, so the film Faramir was the only one I was familiar with unitl I read the character in the book. This is the Faramir that I love! The Faramir who would have never taken the Ring! Of course, my opinion only.

I saw the movies before I read the trilogy, so it made more sense when I started reading... although some of the scenes [like Tom Bombadil] were a bit confusing...

The movies certainly cast things in a new light for me.

One of the most notable things it changed my viewpoint on is Boromir. When I read the books, Boromir had no hold over me. I viewed him as being somewhat whiny and weak. But the movies did such a stellar job at portraying him as strong, but also kind, misguided but lovable in his own right.

Other things it changed my view of/cleared up were just the general lay out of places, Gollum, Grima, Theoden, Denethor and Faramir's relationship, and the way the battle of the Pelennor Fields worked.

Well, for me it certainly cemented the urgency of having to take the Ring to Mount Doom ASAP - I lovelovelove the books, but since it took them so long to finally set out for Rivendell their desperate situation didn't quite sink into my brain (until maybe I read ROTK, I can't remember for sure). But I do like how they got things moving pretty quickly in FOTR the movie, since I was like "Oh! I got it!" when I saw it for the first time. :P Another thing was that it helped me to understand what a big thing it was for Arwen to choose to stay with Aragorn and let her kin go on to the Grey Havens without her.

No...I agree with you citadel guard. ;) I understood Faramir's back ground and his relationship with Boromir when I saw the movie. I didn't like the fact that he decided to take the ring, no way!

I like the books WAAAY better than the movies, and the movies didn't necessarily "clear anything up," it just helped give me the bigger picture a bit better. 'Course, I remember things better seeing them visually/pictures than text, which makes it hard to remember things in the book, but anyway....

I think if I had the choice now, I wouldn't have watched the movies until I'd read the books at least 5 times.

like others, I read the books a long time before the trilogy came out on film
I like the way the films used the Aragorn/Arwen twist, more so than the books do

- besides that, I was actually quite pleased that Tom Bombadil didn´t make the cut in the movies
..for me, it isn´t one of the most interesting plots in the book and I dread it every time I read LotR
..I know I just could jump it, but then again, that´s not the way I read books
..in for a penny, in for a pound - for better or worse

oh I can only agree with you. I'm not too sad about that either. I usually don't skip the part when reading the books either, but I still don't like reading that chapter.
