also tolkien hated war altogether, he was writing this story because he wanted to make up his own explanation of things, and if he was alive today i think he would be deeply offended, for his book that he had slaved over for years to be compared to a catastrophy like that!

I think that is a very important fact. Many people I know think that Tolkien didn't hate war.

Yes Tolkien hated war but many people I know (my best friend for example) think that Tolkien didn't hate war because of all the fights in the movies (She didn't read the books...)

sorry late into the convo but that is sick. Thats makeing it into a joke. Plus the fact that they are turning Alakieda into the ipitomy of evil. Evil has no perpose, it is there only to destroy good. Alkieda think that they are good, and they are men, therefore some part of them must still be good. Calling them evil distances them from us, makes them no longer our problem.
On a diffrent note....how can they do that to LOTR, ok spoofs are funny that is just plain insulting.
Sorry ahd to say that. Bye

on a different (and slightly off-topic) note. The Dead Marshes are meant to be based upon Tolkien's experiences during the Battle of the Somme.

yes I know that, and i know he fought in both world wars as well. But who didn't in them days? whther they hated war or not? read essay below which i got high marks on:
The Origins of Middle-Earth - Tolkien and Lewis
One of the factors, which united Tolkien and Lewis, was a shared experience of fighting in World War One. For people like Lewis, who had been left for dead on a battlefield, or Tolkien who fought in the Battle of the Somme, Tolkien needed a new explanation of evil, and they hadn’t got it at the time.
During World War One, Tolkien saw a lot of death and destruction in the mud and the water, seeing dead people lying there, facing upwards. So there’s no question at all that the “Dead Marshes” where all the great battles had been fought, are definitely taken from his experiences through out World War One.
So these writers (or traumatised writers as I’d like to call them) have all undergone severe trauma of one kind or another and they had to write their own explanation of what evil was.
IMPORTANT PART:
Its so easy for people to talk about the themes in the Lord of the Rings and just say, “It’s the classic good versus evil.” I feel that this is a naïve view to take because Tolkien "hated war" and he "hated the futility" of war and the waste of war, yet Tolkien also said that there are ultimately some things worth fighting for, and if you are going to fight for anything it’s freedom.

So i still think its wrong that his work of art should be compared to 9/11.

The last point about Tolkien hating war and the futility of war was quoted by Peter Jackson himself.

May I say something?
I don't think this person meant to offend anyone. They probably did not think of how other people might react to it. I'm not quite sure whether this person was trying to be funny, but I don't think so. There's nothing funny about 9/11. It could be that they were trying to put some kind of romantic twist on it. Sort of give the hope that we will unite and imerge victorious against evil like LotR. Or the person could have just been very shallow, and not know anything about Tolkien beyond the movies. Regardless, I do not think it should be taken very offensively, no matter how painful it is.
