PostPosted: May 26th, 2006, 5:43 am

Hey everyone :-D
I'm doing this research about Tolkien as a final project in 10th grade. Now I'd like to get a view on what others think about him and about LotR.
So I'm gonna post some questions here, and it'd be really great if you took the time to answer them.
Whether you wanna PM me the answers or post them here is totally up to you, I'll be forever grateful anyway;)

1. Have you read the Lord of the Rings?
2. If yes, at what age?
3. What did you think of the book?
4. How many times have you read it?
5. Have you read any other books by Tolkien?
6. If yes, when, which and what did you think of them?
7. Have you seen the films?
8. If yes, what did you think?
9. What do you prefer, books or films?
10. How do you think Tolkien's books have influenced the world?

If you have anything more you wanna say, I'd appreciate that too :)
Thanks peoples!

~Loth :explode:

1. Have you read the Lord of the Rings? Aye!
2. If yes, at what age? Uh.. Fourteen/Fifteen.
3. What did you think of the book? Magnificent. Masterpiece.
4. How many times have you read it? Well, I've read some books more than the others. But the whole, in total. Once.
5. Have you read any other books by Tolkien? Yup yup!
6. If yes, when and what did you think of them? The Hobbit when I was around eleven. The Silmarillion when I was twelve, then again when I was fourteen. A few non-Middle-earth books at different ages; I truly forget the English names. One was about a farmer killing a dragon, I was thirteen I think, the other was about a man with a large hat, and I think I was fifteen.
7. Have you seen the films? Yar yar!
8. If yes, what did you think? Amazing. Best movies yet.
9. What do you prefer, books or films? Books, definitely.
10. How do you think Tolkien's books have influenced the world? I definitely think more people have started thinking more about the enviroment around the globe, ie. take better care of the forests and all. I think he's helped virsulizing (sp?) good and evil, so we're more aware of it. I don't necessarily think that was his intentions, though. And, of course, he has given us a long line of great fiction, which we can somewhat put into a paralel with our world. And which we can all gather around and share.

That sounds like fun :)

1. Have you read the Lord of the Rings? yup
2. If yes, at what age? 11
3. What did you think of the book? I loved it.
4. How many times have you read it? Um.. 5 or 6 times maybe
5. Have you read any other books by Tolkien? The Hobbit, The Sillmarrilion, a book with some of his shorter stories such as Leaf by Niggle
6. If yes, when, which and what did you think of them? I liked the Hobbit and the short stories but I found the Silmarillion a bit too hard going and found it quite boring.
7. Have you seen the films? Yup
8. If yes, what did you think? They're really excellent
9. What do you prefer, books or films? I love both
10. How do you think Tolkien's books have influenced the world? I don't think they've influenced the world in general as something like 1984 did. However they've majorly influenced fantasy in the last 50 years particularly epic fantasy.

1. Have you read the Lord of the Rings?
Yes

2. If yes, at what age?
started around 8-10

3. What did you think of the book?
I thought it was a piece of literary genius

4. How many times have you read it?
5+ times

5. Have you read any other books by Tolkien?
The Sil, The Hobbit, Roverandom

6. If yes, when, which and what did you think of them?
They were all unique but none the less genius

7. Have you seen the films?
More times than I probably should have ;)

8. If yes, what did you think?
I thought there were brilliant in their own way. They were different from the book so I cannot compare to the two. I look at them both as two different genres of the same story so to speak....

9. What do you prefer, books or films?
The Books, they have more history and go in depth with the characters and the worlds and races. Though the movies gave me a vision of Middle-Earth

10. How do you think Tolkien's books have influenced the world?
Tolkiens books have opened many peoples eyes to the very basic emotions, love, hate, loyalty, what is right and wrong, good and evil. Tolkien has influenced the world by showing them that there is still some good in this world, no matter how terrible things get or how much you do not feel like you can go on there is still hope, there is still some good that you can achieve if you look inside yourself. [i hope that makes sense?] He also shows how strong a loyalty can be and how much strength one person can have. So much more Tolkien has taught me that I do not have any words to describe them. He has influenced me so much, he has really made me think about who I am and I thank him and his books for that :)

1. Have you read the Lord of the Rings? Yes.

2. If yes, at what age? I began with "The Hobbit" in 6th grade(11 years of age),and read it twice that year. That same year i read the fellowship of the ring, and finished the Return of the King, along with the Silmarillion at 13 years of age.

3. What did you think of the book? The book is, breathtaking. It is just something else, you can read it once, and then read it again finding some new hidden message that Tolkien has implanted in it. It's a whole new world, something everyone has to be a part of.

4. How many times have you read it? I have read the whole triolgy, only once, the Silmarillion 1 and a half times, and The Hobbit twice, but it's on my summer list, to re-read the trilogy! =)

5. Have you read any other books by Tolkien? Yes, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, Farmer Gils of Ham, Leaf by Niggle, and his essay on fairy tales", I also am readin the Book of lost tales, edited by Chris. Tolkien.

6. If yes, when, which and what did you think of them? I love the Hobbit, it's sweet, fun and good-natured, it introduces to Bilbo, and Gollum, the tale is one of a simple lore, though that sounds odd. I realyl enjoyed the Silmarillion as well. It is more difficult of course, with all of the names, dates, events, and people, that are thrown at you quickly, you have to keep track of things. But the exquisite writing that brings everything to life in this drama is simply breath-taking. Then there's simple tales like Framer Giles of Ham, a very funny story, cute and simple. And Leaf by Niggle, that one made me think, it's one very deep short stoy. =P

7. Have you seen the films? Oh yes, many, many, MANY, times.

8. If yes, what did you think? I love the movies, i did watch the movies before the book came out, so they had the greater impact on me, I really loved the movies. PJ made the characters very easy to relate to, and it really got the word out there for many Ringers. Although the movies did miss and add a few key events, thats ok.

9. What do you prefer, books or films? Well, NOTHING can compare to the beauty of literature, words and writing can make you imgane it all, especially the way Tolkien does it. But, the movies are a lot easier, especially when you don't understand things, i think i could watch the movies much easier than read the book. But i cant REALLY say I prefer them, but books or movies? Movies.

10. How do you think Tolkien's books have influenced the world? Tolkien began influencing the world with his first book, The Hobbit. When the book gained popularity during the "hippie era" this is when society fell in love with hobbits. These little furry-footed creatures lived a simple, care-free lifestyle. Smoking and eating, the wrold loved this and immediatly embraced and loved the hobbits. When The Lord of the Rings came out, I think, this is when it hit the world, big-time, that there really is a battle between good and evil. And "even the smallest person can change the course of the future" Even the smallest, the meekest, the weakest, the less powerful, anyone can stand up for thier belief of what is right. Also, so many issues in Middle-earth can be put right next to problems we face today. Global problems, deforestation, human violations, etc., Tolkien and even director Peter Jackon are handing us a lot of things on a silver platter. Tolkien also, unmistakebley, changed the world of literature. He became and idol for authors today to look to, an enigma of true genius, there are a lot people who look up to Tolkien, authors,a dn even directors, like George Lucas who admitted to lovng Tolkien as a teen. I truly believe Tolkien has affected MANY people, wether they eblive it or not.

EDIT: I forgot my name, etc.

My name's Maria, I'm 13 (14 in 2 weeks), and I live in Miami, FL, that's all you needed right?

3. I loved it from the first page

10. He has made a whole new style of writing, he made people see how important it was to fly away in their own fantasy sometimes..

1. Have you read the Lord of the Rings?
-Yes
2. If yes, at what age?
-The first time, I was eleven.
3. What did you think of the book?
-*laughs* The first time I read them, I was very engrossed through FotR but by the time I reached RotK I was simply skimming. It's hard to stay focused for that long. But recently I've read them through all the way, and when I focus on the actual story, not 'gee, I need to finish this chapter', they are very interesting and I still love them. :)
4. How many times have you read it?
-4 times, I think.
5. Have you read any other books by Tolkien?
-The Hobbit and the Silmarillion
6. If yes, when, which and what did you think of them?
-I very much enjoyed the Silmarillion. Most people think it's long and dreary, but I really liked it. The Hobbit I didn't like nearly as much as LotR or the Silmarillion because it seemed that the adventure wasn't to save anyone or anything, it was simply a bunch of dwarves wanting to get rich.
7. Have you seen the films?
-Many times!
8. If yes, what did you think?
-They were very well done. There are always those small things you think PJ could have done better, but overall it was very close to the story and played wonderfully.
9. What do you prefer, books or films?
-I like them both for different reasons. However, I must be honest. I watch the movies more often then I look back at the books.
10. How do you think Tolkien's books have influenced the world?
-They really changed the fantasy genre, and have given many readers the chance to enjoy another world from time to time. :)

1. Have you read the Lord of the Rings? Yes.
2. If yes, at what age? I was 11, I think.
3. What did you think of the book? I wanted to read it because the Fellowship was coming out back then, and I started with the Hobbit, and then went on to read LotR. I thought it was much better than the Hobbit, and I immediatley fell in love with it. I was really into fantasy back then (still am) and read entire dictionaries all about Middle Earth.
4. How many times have you read it? Three, four times.
5. Have you read any other books by Tolkien? I've read the Hobbit and the Silmarillion.
6. If yes, when, which and what did you think of them? I liked the Hobbit, but it wasn't my favorite. I read it before LotR, and I read the Sil a year after I read LotR for the first time. I really liked the Sil. It was a lot like a history of Middle Earth rather than a story, but I still enjoyed it immensly.
7. Have you seen the films? Yes.
8. If yes, what did you think? They are very good movies, and yes, they could have been able to measure up to the books if they hadn't skipped so many scenes. I really don't like movies that are based on books, because most of the time, they're nothing like the original story (just look at Ella Enchanted). However, LotR followed the authentic storyline very closely, which is more than you can say for most movies nowadays.
9. What do you prefer, books or films? Books all the way.
10. How do you think Tolkien's books have influenced the world? Tolkien created a whole new branch of fantasy. So many authors have followed in his footsteps, like Christopher Paolini. The Lord of the Rings will never be forgotten, not just because everybody's heard of the movies now, but because people of all ages were immersed into a whole new world. Tolkien made Middle Earth completely and totally believable.

This is a very good way to do a research project, by the way. :P
