Topic says all. I've read The Silmarillion and I'm about halfway through Unfinished Tales, and there's nothing of how hobbits came to being. Could someone please fill me in?

That is also what I've always wondered about, but I couldn't find an answer to my question... I'd also like to know the answer :)

Hobbits were men once. In some war south of M-E a loooooong time ago, men fled Noth. The big men (Gondorians) who were very capable of fighting and in greater need for food, settled first and founded Gondor. The men on horseback (Rohirrim) could travel further from evil and settled in Rohan. The smallest men, who were in less need for food and evolved even smaller and their feet grew bigger, traveled furher up north. Because of this, Mithrandir knew Bilbo could withstand an adventure like going all the way to find Smaug. So it was an evolutionairy process. Perhaps someone could refress my memory and tell us what is was again men fled for in the first place.

Erm, a theory from WotR forum:

Ivahoe wrote:

How did Hobbits come to the ME?

Well, i'm not sure how to ask this question. Who made Hobbits? And Gollum's tribe (the ones like the Stoors)? If Eru made the Elves and Men, and Aulë made Dwarves, then who made Hobbit race? If someone can answer me, i would be thankful.

If you are prepared to continue, do so with great fear of the ultimate theory.

There was a hole in the ground and this hole was known to be the Hole of Creation. No one, not even the great rulers of Valinor, could see what was beyond the darkness of it's depth. It was a microphone. Yes, the microphone that would amplify anything that came close to it, changing it into the Music of Ainur.

If a coin would fall into the hole, it would fall on the mic and sound a melody so damaging, that all creatures would have coins instead of eyes. If a glass of wine would be spilled down the hole, all waters would change into wine. Any disturbance would unsettle all that was long ago settled. All would change and it would be impossible to reverse this.

And so it happened, that when Eru was in the process of creating a big set of people, scheduled to be shipped to future Gondor, Melkor was in the vicinity of the Hole of Creation. He had some particularly bad hamburgers for lunch, and he was feeling really sick. It so happened that he needed to relief himself, and looking for a toilet he spotted only this hole. He knew not what it was, and if he did, he would stay away from it. It could cause changes so big, that he might loose his powers.

But he did not know of the powers of this hole in the ground. He put his pants down and he done what needed to be done right down the hole. A tone of the Music so horrible was sounded, that it destroyed the beautiful new order of Men. It crippled them and they became midgets, horrible creatures know as Hobbits.

A lot of peple answer tyhat question by just saying "Hobbits were put on Middle-Earth just like you and m were put on Earth." But that's not true. Eyalan's theory is correct. Good Job! I'm surprised you got that, not everyone understands that! :)

I'm thinking this thread needs to be moved to the Misc. Book forum.

But, to answer your question, it is not known as to where the Hobbits came from. All we know is that they were found by Men in the north part of Arda.

I could have sworn my friend told me something about the history of hobbits a long time ago but now I can't remember exactly what she said.

On a side note, I just remember my mom telling me of a discovery of a skeleton somewhere in the middle east that resembled a hobbit. Wouldn't that be so awesome if they were actually real?
