Aww, I feel really sorry for all you guys who don't have any/many ringer friends! *hugs* that must be really tough - it's always hard being interested in something that others around you don't understand. I feel like I'm the odd-one out a lot, but generally LotR isn't the cause...

I'm lucky in that regard when it comes to LotR; I may have few friends, but they all like LotR, one even as obsessively as I do! I also have family members who have seen/liked LotR, and that I can discuss it with. I also have friends who are really like Enya and so on.

I think all you can really hope for is that people are able to not shut you up in a box just because of your interest in LotR, and maybe one day soon you'll be able to share something that means so much to you. From experience, forcing someone to read/see LotR actually can work! I only saw FotR because my friend talked me into it; one of my friends at school only read it because I threatened to not speak to her (in jest :p) if she didn't read it over the holidays, and told her I'd lend her the extended editions once she'd finished - and it worked! :)

you're so lucky Herenya. I've also forced my best friend to watch the LotR EE, but she still doesn't like it. It's not realistic enough she says... I don't understand that, it is realistic (of course not the existence of orcs and all that, but the themes like e.g. hope or friendship), but she doesn't understand it (she's a bit dumb ya know.. :P)

maybe she is dumb, by what i've noticed, lotr attracts real Ringers right away, for example when i saw the movies i got interested right away. but it doesnt mean your, herenya, theory wouldn't work! i watched harry potter movies, but i didnt get that interested to read the books. but then my friend said i should read them, and now i've read all 6 of them. (but lotr is much much better than H.P!!!!!!!!!!!!!) ;)

*agrees* I was also interested in LotR right away, but of course there are some friends of mine who watched LotR in theatre and also watched the DVD, but they don't like it anymore (they also didn't read the books..)

Well, at the best, at least they KNOW what you are going on about, regardless of whether or not they are obsessed with it. I guess LotR is something some people just wouldn't find interesting, and I don't know what to suggest there, short of asking them to respect your own interests. Also, people's interests do change over time - just because someone isn't captivated by something today, doesn't mean that they'll continue like that.

Oh, and I listen to classical/celtic, soundtracks and other random stuff. :)

thanks Herenya :) I really hope people's interests change over the years, because at the moment I totally am the odd-one-out, because I like LotR and I think differently than all the others whodon't like LotR..

i hope i will never cut my bonds with LOTR, it is something that I wont give up on, just like playing the violin. but I dont mind if I dont care at all about harry potter anymore...(and even now i'm not that interested in it, although I have to admit it's okay)

Wow.

I'll admit that I've never experienced any of that. My school is pretty inclusive and opinions are never really shot down, and all of my friends don't care what kind of music I listen to or what I enjoy, so long as it's not, like, hurting anyone. I guess I'm pretty lucky to come from a school where everyone is pretty nerdy.

The worst I can claim is me saying something in eighth grade about LotR and a classmate saying "It's just sad that you know that" but he was completely kidding, so no problem.

I think it's kinda the fate of most Ringers to be outsiders, but not just because we're Ringers. There's a certain personality type that tends to like LotR, and I've seen it a lot here (at least, in the people that stay around for long). We're not afraid to be a bit different, and we don't change ourselves just because it's not popular. We know what we like and could talk about it for hours because it's something we enjoy and not just something that we feel like we should enjoy. We're also all a bit more on the intellectual side. That's not to say we get perfect grades, but we're not afraid to think a little bit harder and go a little bit deeper into something than is the norm. I mean, you have to think pretty hard just to get through the first half of the FotR book :P. Plus, we're all just a little bit nutty (but in a good way!). Tolkien most appeals to the slightly eccentric sense of humor, so we're perfect for it.
Do I wish every now and then that people would at least acknowledge me when I walk up to them? Sure. But I wouldn't trade being a Ringer for anything in the world. :D

Well said!!!! Couldn't have put it better myself :-D

Personally, I'm not an outsider as such. I know one other person who is an LotR geek. (he can write elvish fluently in tengwar  ) Most people think I'm strange for liking LotR, but my friends are tolerant, and accept who I am, even if I do get teased about it quite often. :annoyed2:

aragorn and liv avatar ppl you two are lucky... it's not that i would be teased of bieng a lotr nut, (well, sometimes yes) but i feel like there's no one (exept here) who I can talk to about it. i feel like...different in a way that i'm not interested that much about reading cosmopolitan and discussing all the outfits in it...hard to explain.

*agrees* I wish there was just one fellow ringer in my area. But I also agree with what you've written before, I can't imagine ever giving LotR up, I think if the day came it would be a very painful experience for me somehow

No, I don't feel like the odd one out at all, really. I feel pretty secure in my fandom and love of lore in general, and Tolkien in particular. I feel less, shall we say, weird to retain my love of LotR because my focus is generally on the books. They came out before the movies and remain, thus not being soooo...sooo...strange. There's so much to discover within their pages.

I have always been the odd one out, even before i read LotR and watched the movies. I am just...different. It's nice! I get so sick of everyone being the same, likeing the same music and the same books and the same movies. I have always been different, my attitude is different, my likes and dislikes are different. Everything about me...and often other Ringers is different! We dont give two pellets about what people think of our fascination with LotR, we love it and often it's who we are. We live breathe and sleep LotR, if people have a problem with that, who cares! We are...Ringers, we are different.

As for the discussion part, i have no one whos willing to talk about LotR with me. My dad read FotR, but i dont talk to him about it. My friends are all like...bah it's old now get over it, come listen to some rap music with us. Thats the main reason i joined this forum, so i would have someone to talk to about LotR. I mean sure some of them are willing to talk about fantasy but usually they end up talking about boy friends, very annoying i can assure you.

I do feel like the odd-one-out, but LotR isn't usually the cause. I used to talk about LotR a lot, but people didn't like it, so I stopped. Here's my reason: I have a "friend" *cough*idontlikehim*cough* who's extremely obsessed with something I find annoying and revolting, and he talks about it 24/7. I would NEVER want to do that to someone!!! I talk about LotR with people here who enjoy it, and I might mention it to other people, but I don't rant. I don't blame people for not liking LotR; it takes a special person to become engrossed in this world. Not everyone has what it takes to be a ringer!
