I got the idea for this topic because I just requested the RotK from the library, and the sticker on the spine said that RotK was Science Fiction! Which I didn't really understand, because there isn't really any advanced technology in LotR, unless you count the Rings, which make you vanish. That isn't something you see on Earth! At least not yet. . .
So, I decided to make this thread so YOU could post what genre(s) you think LotR should really be in!
List of Genres:
Fantasy
Science Tiction (Sci. Fi.)
Adventure
Mystery
Horror
Thriller
Historical Fiction
Humor
I think that's all of them, but if I'm missing any, please tell me!

Definitely Fantasy/Adventure. I too don't see LotR as Sci.Fi.

I can't see it as Sci.Fi either. Like Larael, I would classify it as Fantasy/Adventure.

I know. There's nothing Sci-Fi about it. Where's the scientific part of the fiction? It's not ---logical, to quote a REAL sci-fi character (Spock).
Actually, I wouldn't put it in any of those, Lothwen. Why? Because Tolkien said he was trying to create a real English myth. He wrote that the Arthrinian legends are borrowed from France and COMBINED with English, and after the Norman conquest any REAL english myth got garbled. So he was out to create his own mythology.
Thus it belongs in the Fantasy or the Mythology section.

I agree with Ivreniel. I couldn't decide in which genre I should put, but after I read your comment I think that mythology fits to it quite well..

I agree with you, Larael, Elenriel, and Ivreniel. There's really nothing Sci. Fi about LotR!
