Has anyone realized that Kreacher in some respect is simliar to Gollum? Both are old, wears loinclothes, quite insane, resentful of their current "masters", speaks in third person, and mubmles darkly to himself.

Hm... I've always thought Dobby/Gollum because, I just did. And I probably hadn't read about Kreacher when I knew about Gollum.
Besides, I don't think Gollum's annoying. He's not my favourite character in the film (I don't know why; I don't have a problem with the way he is acted/portrayed I just think he didn't live up to my mental image) but I remember I was very attached to him when I was reading the Two Towers.
*moves to misc LotR* It's got some connection, it can go there.

I cant really explain what i'm trying to say, but Gollum was once ... well ... normal and he's not a slave, unlike Kreacher or Dobby.

^ Gollum's a slave to the ring!
Well, after I watched the 2nd HP movie, I really thought that Dobby is indeed very similar to Gollum/Smeagol.

Aww, Dobby tries to do good and messes it up whereas Gollum and Kreacher indirectly try to have their masters killed and one succeeds.

Oh right ... he was a slave to the ring, but he wasn't originally that way.

There are some really interesting similarities between Kreacher and Gollum that I hadn't really noticed till you mentioned it now. I wonder if JKR was inspired by the character Gollum when she wrote about Kreacher.

yes please don't kill me too, but I agree with Haldir. I also noticed that, but of course there also many differences between these two stories, no doubt.

Yeah, I had noticed that about Kreacher and Gollum.
As for the previous posts ^, you can't really blame her, Tolkien set a completely new foundation for literature and the world of fantasy. Even people like George Lucas took a little from Tolkien.

*cough* I agree haldir dearest sister... and in a way we almost have proof... its not solid.... but oh well. JKR was/is a HUGE Tolkien fan! She is quoted saying how much she loved LOTR and tolien's work!

Wow .. but i mean ... it's definitely alright for her to use some ideas from Tolkien obviously [[he's an inspiration!]] but she did use aLOT in a VERY unsubtle way, which was a bit stupid of her.

I have to agree again.. I didn't know she was a Tolkien fan though, but Tolkien indeed is a great inspiration
