So you want to know the about the Lady Anduril do you? Well settle down, and I will tell you the Story of the Elf of Gondor
Many years ago, when elves where plentiful upon the earth. There were born four elves, Arwen Undromiel, who would grow up to be the Queen of Gondor and grandmother of our king Arathorn, the twins Elladan and Elrohir, and Edhelwen, the Elf maiden. Edhelwen watched her sister become the Evenstar of her people, and her brothers win acclaim on the battlefield.
For many years the Lady Arwen became fairer and fairer, as did Edhelwen. Yet, her beauty was not noticed, it being so insignificant against her sisters. She watched as her brothers fought alongside the Dunadan, and mourned. She walked dutifully behind her sister and died inside as the people applauded her song, but whispered, Arwen’s voice was fairer… Arwen’s dance was lighter…and when she surprised them by her wish for swordplay, Arwen was the real Lady of Rivendell. Her father and family saw her as nothing but a pretty child to highlight Arwen’s virtues.
Only her older brother Elrohir saw her for her self. He secretly taught her how to wield a Dagger, and the finer points of Archery. Soon her oldest brother Elladan found out, and after some persuading, taught her Swordplay. Soon she and her sister were sent to stay in Lothlorien, and here Arwen had no need of her little attendant. So, Edhelwen sought company in her Grandmother, who saw her mind, and that she would die of grief if she did not free her self of Arwen’s domination. But she said nothing knowing Edhelwen must find her own way, yet teaching her in the art of Mind speech which she had inherited.
It was soon after this, that Aragorn son of Arathorn came to Lothlorein, and she fell in love with him. However, Arwen entranced him, though he looked at Edhelwen strangely when they first met. Then he left and they were sent back to Rivendell, but Edhelwen, in whom hatred with her sister had been growing for many years, resolved to escape.
She told none of her plan but collected together strong travelling clothes, and her weapons, but no sword, and set out to track down Aragorn. She soon found him, but did not let him know she was there, helping him in many strange ways, but never showing her presence. The men of Bree met her, and took her for a Ranger, so naming her Fleet for her quick paces. She also went to all the Dwarfs of Middlearth and forged friendships with them. Learning their skills and language, and they named her Rolda. She now left Aragorn on the borders of the Shire and went to the North and the Ice Bay of Forochel, searching for news of the Lost Palantir, where the people there named her Ydal, meaning Sunlady in their speech.
She returned to the West by way of Lake Nenuial, as evening approached she lay down in a hollow beside the lake, and dreamed. She dreamed of a map of Middlearth, but the map was old and rot was spreading out from the place where Mordor was written. Then a fire started on the western corner, and spread through the parchment, but was not burned. Where the fire had passed the parchment was white and new, and she heard a voice say “ Elo, Anduril, whom evil fly’s before!” Then the vision changed and she saw her self in a battle wielding a sword along side Aragorn. Her sight sharpened upon the sword, and upon it was inscribed, ‘Hachdin’. Once more, the vision changed and she saw herself sleeping by the Lake, and once more the voice cried “Elo Anduril Peredhil, Lach en Annun”. She awoke, and looked down at the Sword in her hand, upon it was written, ‘Hachdin’
Now Anduril went to Lothlorein once more and presented her self to Galadriel, asking “Will you accept me, Lady, for I am still yours’. Galadriel looked at the Warrior who stood before her, her red hair flashing in the sunlight, and enfolded her into her arms. Now Anduril caught up again with Aragorn, but now presented her self to him, asking him who she was. “ Are you not Edhelwen,” he answered “ the Maiden with Fire in her eyes, at Lothlorein”
“Yes, she answered that was I. I have been following you since that time.”
“ Then it was you, the one who left the messages in Runes?”
“Yes” she laughed, “Yet now I am named Anduril Peredhil, the Flame of the West, and before me evil fly’s.”
From that moment on, she worked openly with him no longer hiding from her own shadow.
When Aragorn came to Frodo, she was there with him and travelled with them to Rivendell. There her brothers welcomed her, and her name with open arms, her farther grudgingly, and Arwen not at all. She ordered Anduril to put down her sword, and follow her train once more, but Anduril refused, and against Elronds word snuck out after the Fellowship, only telling her brothers where she had gone, and joining the Fellowship at the foot of Calderas. She then stayed with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimlie through the quest, and when they were reunited with Gandalf, she tamed her horse Mithelen, who had come to Gandalf with Shadowfax. She now accepted that Aragorn would never love her, but she remained good friends with him for the rest of his life.
When Sauron was defeated, she stayed in Gondor, often leading out men to stop trouble in the East or South, but it was now she made the nine Palantir of Fire. The one of these she kept, another she gave to Elrond, and she was still able to speak with him once he had passed over the sea. A further one was given to the Lady Lithoniel, and a last to Eomer King of Rohan. The others to King Aragorn. The First he set in Gondor, the Second in the now rebuilt tower of Orthanc, a Third he set in Minis Morgul, to watch what happened in Mordor. The other two he put in the Treasury of Gondor. When her kin went over the Sea, she did not take up her abode in Rivendell, and become its Lady, neither did she go to Lothlorein. “The time of the Elves is finished she said, “I will help men, for it is them that evil will attack”. So, the realm of Rivendell passed into the hands of her niece, Lithoniel Tinuveil.
When King Aragorn died, and the Queen Arwen left, she stayed in Gondor, grieving. Yet she did not morn long, she helped the Good King Eldarion, and after him, our King Arathorn. However, she has never sworn allegiance to Gondor and none has power over her, she dose all of her own will. So if you ever meet the Lady Anduril Peredhil, do not displease her, for she has helped our kind so much and dose so willingly.
