History: Ninniach is born on a warm summer night. It has just rained, and thus a rainbow is visible over the mountains surrounding Imladris. Although evil once again is openly upon them, Vanima feels at peace. She asks that her newborn daughter is named Ninniach after the rainbow. As Ninniach grows her father teaches her things he believes she needs to know to survive if war comes upon them. He teaches her sword-fighting and how to use a bow, and she also teaches herself to use knives. Ninniach loves trees, and quickly becomes a master on hiding among them. She often dresses like a he-elf, as she finds gowns unpractical for climbing trees. Vanima passes her healing skills on to her daughter, and tells her stories of old times.
When Ninniach is 12 human years, her little brother Gildor is born. Ninniach loves Gildor more than anything. Vanima has long been weak, and not long after Gildor is born, she asks that she is taken to the Grey Havens and over the sea. Elladan makes sure she is taken safely, and forever after he longs to follow her. Ninniach seems to fade when her mother leaves. She becomes shy, and spends even more time alone in the woods. The only one who can cheer her up is her brother. Ninniach has always been her father’s daughter; she is his same in everything except for her looks. Gildor however looks and behaves just as his mother did, and Ninniach is determined to teach him all her skills to make sure he can survive in Middle Earth. She is convinced that the reason her mother had to leave was that she couldn’t fight, and that she also had a weak spirit. She senses the same weak spirit in her brother, and wants him to become stronger. She is forever worried that her brother will have to leave Middle Earth.
When the council is held Ninniach often comes out of the woods. She is curious about all these people from strange places, the hobbits in particular. She already knows Elessar, and when he visits Imladris, he would always come to seek her in the woods and tell her stories of foreign countries. He has told her stories of hobbits, and she has always wanted to meet other hobbits than old Bilbo Baggins who always seems to be sleepy or sick. When she meets Legolas Greenleaf she knows not what to say. She has never met an elf-prince, and she is ashamed that she knows not how to act in front of him. However, Legolas is not a prince like other princes, and he makes Ninniach realise that it is not very likely that her brother will have to leave Middle Earth by any other will than his own. Ninniach now spends more time outside the woods, much to her father’s delight, who has had the feeling that he is about to loose his only daughter.
She now spends more time with her aunt Arwen, and she also wears dresses more often. Her grand-father Elrond gives her the name Aranel, he says she looks like the fair elven princesses of the old times. But even though she now behaves more like the elf-girl she is, she cannot understand why she has to stay behind when her father goes to war. She can’t see the use of having achieved all her fighting skills if she’s not to use them. Arwen is a great help for her at this time. She tells her that she too has fighting skills, but she never goes to war. It is not the destiny of girls to go to war. And besides, who is to defend Imladris from enemies if every able-bodied warrior is dead? Ninniach accepts this explination and stays behind.
But when Arwen is about to leave Middle Earth, Ninniach insists that both she and Gildor stays. Not even in Valinor would she have peace, without the trees of Imladris. So they stay and wait for their father.
