After a couple of hours watching the ponies, Aranyë noticed something. "Kili!" She whispered. "You know how we're supposed to have 16 ponies?" "Yeah," Kili replied nonchalantly. "Well, now we have 14!" Aranyë hissed urgently. Kili and Fili both gasped. "Oh no that is a problem!" Fili exclaimed just as Bilbo approached trying to balance 5 bowls of soup. He noticed everyone's worried stares and asked, "What's the matter?" "We're supposed to be looking out for the ponies," Kili replied, and Fili added, "Only we've encountered a slight problem..."

Fili looked at Bilbo. "As our official burglar, we thought you might want to look into it!" They went looking and found three very large trolls. "We have to do something!" Bilbo cried. "Yes; you should," said Kili. "Mountain trolls are slow and stupid, and you're so small!" Bilbo was reluctant, and Aranyë offered to come but Kili said she couldn't. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" Bilbo asked but Fili and Kili were gone....
