Niell stopped, listening. He didn't hear anything at first. The woods seemed completely silent, too silent. "It's what I don't hear that worries me," he said.

She nodded, "there should be something... but it's as though everything has been frightened into silence..." Silmarwen loosened her sword in its sheath.

Niell looked up, trying in vain to see through the canopy of leaves. The night had completely taken over and the thick trees around them blocked out any moonlight there might have been. He drew his sword silently and glared into the darkness. It could barely be seen, but in the shadow of the trees a black shape was pacing.

Silmarwen noticed the black shape as well and without noise, unsheathed her sword. She glanced at Niell, "what would you say it is?" she said in barely a whisper, too low for any but elven ears to hear.
