Starless Night

There is no daytime in the land of Mordor. No morning, no sunrise. Eternal night.
It is not only orcs that inhabit this soulless landscape, as you would presume. The Dark Lord Sauron’s servant, The Mouth of Sauron, delights in using human prisoners to do his bidding. He has an obsession with “breaking” them, as he calls it.
But whilst his trustworthy Gondorian servant, Arawen, has always obeyed him, the arrival of a new prisoner will throw her thoughtless obedience into confusion.
This is the untold struggle of prisoners, the twisted games of Mordor’s second-in-command. Whilst the War of the Ring rages about them, inward battles of their own take place.

“You will attend to the new prisoner in short order. I think you will be a useful tool to me in finally breaking her. After all, you were once as she is now.”
The young woman watched the dark figure at the window – at least, it was the size and shape of what were usually called windows, but no light filtered through the hideous glass, and the ugly metal frame was tarnished, setting it off uglier still. She said nothing, but only waited for his next words.
“The detestable Gondorian pride is strong in her still. She has refused all my orders that she should start speaking of matters that would interest us. She even assaulted the servant I sent to bring her morning meal.”
Rotten meat and inedible bread hardly counted as breakfast. No wonder the girl had broken the servant – or slave’s – nose.
“So you see, I am counting on you to break her will for me.”
It seemed that she was finally expected to speak, and The Mouth of Sauron’s trusted servant shrugged. “If you wish it. I doubt she shall be any keener to speak to me, though. I am an enemy.”
“Ah, but you were from Gondor. Something to build on, perhaps.”
She did not flinch at the mention of her country. A long time had passed since she had last been a citizen of the beautiful city of Minas Anor. A long time since first she had been taken prisoner, and this place had become her “home”. Though her accent was still Gondorian, she had developed a fearsome reputation for mercilessness when given orders. Cruelty had somehow become part of her nature, though she by no means gave any allegiance from her heart to the one giving the orders.
“She will fear me, more than associate herself with me. She will fear what she might become; meeting me would make her more obstinate to disobeying you,” she said.
The Mouth of Sauron let out a terrible, ugly laugh. “Perhaps. But whatever the case it is my wish that you go and see her. This is your new task. I think that I can count on you; you’ve proved useful to me,” he said. “You will go at once.”
A small pause, before she weighed up the situation and decided it was best to obey. “Very well,” she said. “But it will not rest on my shoulders, if she speaks or no. You might want to remember that she comes from a stubborn bloodline. Loyal.”
“And are you loyal still, Arawen?”
“I am loyal to nobody. I simply obey orders.”
Another hideous laugh. “Very good. I do not need your loyalty. I only need to know that you will do anything I say. Even if it meant jumping off this tower and plummeting to your death.”
“Now that, I wouldn’t do.” She turned to go.

The Gondorian girl was skulking round in her cell like a caged lioness. Turning, spotting the approaching enemy, a glare took hold of her lovely features. Clenching her teeth, she almost hissed, and clenched the bars of her cage as if she would tear them apart.
Unimpressed, Arawen approached the bars.
“No need for that,” she said. “I’m not going to harm you.”
“Do you think I am afraid? You know nothing,” the girl retorted. “I pity you, slave that you are.”
“I’m not a slave,” Arawen replied, no hint of emotion in her voice.
“Oh yes? Your accent is Gondorian. Minas Tirith, if I’m not mistaken. You were like me before they ‘broke’ you, weren’t you? That is what they want to do to me. Break me. Nobody can.”
“My origin of birth is of no consequence. We are not speaking of me, but you. Tell me, what is your name?”
“Luthien,” the girl replied, full of pride.
“I see.” Arawen considered this. Numenorians often had a fancy for naming their children after Elven heroes and heroines. “How old are you, Luthien?”
“Eighteen.”
“And would you be very disappointed, if you should have some unfortunate accident? Would you be very sad?”
Luthien studied Arawen closely. Dark-haired, pale-skinned, wearing a dark red dress with tattered skirts. “You wouldn’t dare threaten me.”
“Oh, perhaps not,” Arawen said. She reached a slim hand through the thick bars and lightly rested her fingers on Luthien’s throat, as if threatening to choke her. “No. Maybe I’m telling you something. To start speaking up.”
“About what?” the girl was not in the least bit frightened. “Where I am from? Who my parents are? The level of our loyalty to Gondor? I’ll wager I’d be of no help to you.”
Arawen said nothing.
Suddenly, unexpectedly, Luthien spat into her face. Withdrawing her hand and cursing, Arawen disgustedly wiped off the spittle. She gazed at the prisoner with a stony face. “You’ll pay for that,” she said quietly.
“When Mordor falls you’ll pay for your crimes,” Luthien said.
Arawen calmed the anger inside her; it was no use being irritated at one who was imprisoned. Stretching the silence out longer between them, she shrugged.
Luthien glared through the bars.
“I’ll ignore what you just said,” Arawen said coolly. “And what you just did. You seem to have a talent for abusing your captors. Well, here is a word of advice you should be clever enough to heed. Punching and spitting won’t get you anywhere. Not in this place.”
“I will never bow to obedience,” Luthien said. “Not like you.”
It became apparent to Arawen that their conversation was going nowhere. Conceding that the girl would obviously continue in this vein, she turned away. “I’ll leave you to mull over what I told you.”
As her footsteps carried her away from the cell, she heard Luthien’s furious call behind her.
“You can tell them I won’t tell them anything! Do you hear me? I won’t tell them anything.”
Arawen ignored her, and went up the winding narrow steps, taking her away from the hideous prison of Mordor.

~~~
Name: Arawen
Gender: Female
Age: 21
Race: Gondorian
Picture 1: Arawen 1
Picture 2: Arawen 2
Personality: Arawen has no fear of speaking her opinion when it is required, but often she prefers to stay silent. Since her arrival in Mordor several years ago when taken prisoner by a band of orcs, her manner and personality undertook a dramatic change, as did her nature.
History: Arawen was born in Minas Tirith to a wealthy family and was brought up as nobility. However, at the age of eighteen, she and her family were attacked on a trip to see friends, and Arawen put up more of a fight than they expected. She alone survived, but eventually she could no longer fight the orcs, and they decided to punish her for daring to fight back so ferociously. They took her to Mordor, where she was made a prisoner. After days in a cell, left alone, showing no signs of giving in to her captors, she was brought before The Mouth of Sauron. He liked her stubbornness, and decided to make her his servant. He began sending her on errands, and soon he used her to interrogate new prisoners. Since then she has been an effective interrogator and a trusted if not completely loyal servant.
Name: Luthien
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Race: Gondorian:
Picture: Luthien
Personality: Luthien is proud and stubborn, and says whatever she wishes with no fear of angering anyone. She would be a powerful opponent in a fight, though she has been brought up by a rich family to be a gentlewoman. She takes immense pride in her namesake, since she loves tales of Elves.
History: Born in a wealthy household, Luthien has never wanted for any luxury. Growing up she was given immensely rich gowns and books of Elven poetry and literature. Her love of immortal folk was indulged, but her loyalty never swerved from her own people; such fierce loyalty to Gondor kindled a need for revenge upon Mordor for all the wrongs it had bestowed upon her country. Now at the age of eighteen, she was found on the outskirts of Ithilien, obstinately planting flowers dangerously near to enemy borders. Now she sits in a prison cell, and refuses to cooperate with anything.
[ I'm not sure how my charrie is going to fit in or how this will work out.. So.. what's the plot going to be like? ]
"You're wasting your breath girl." A voice sounded from one of the cells opposite to Luthien's. The man, to whom the voice belonged, was invisible for Luthien as he'd remained in the shadow of the back of his cell. "The more you talk, the more you expose yourself." His voice sounded emotionless and calm as if he'd resigned himself to his fate. "It is no use."
(Welcome Neri! Looking forward to your bios! :-D
And welcome Will! :-D
So, this RP is rather different in a lot of ways from most others starting with the fact it’s set in Mordor; but I think it’ll be fun! If you’re playing a prisoner then generally your character’s going to be communicating a lot with the other prisoners; but they will get to RP with the other characters – prison = a lot of interrogation. So basically we’ll be seeing how it goes, but it’s my goal for the prisoners to start to plot an escape amongst themselves; more difficult than it sounds!
I’m sure we’ll have a lot of plot to work with, in short =) )
Okay, thanks!
Here's my bio:
Name: Rayelin (rye-ELL-in) (I just made that up, so it's not very...you know, LotR-ish and all...no time to consult the Silmarillion and my name bank is down. Let's just say her parents decided to be original or something.)
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Race: Gondorian
Appearance: Brown hair with a touch of gold, reaching to slightly below her shoulders but usually put back. Rayelin has hazel eyes between olive green and light brown. While quite fair, work, danger, and toil have given her face a slightly hard look, though it softens if she is happy. Since her capture, however, such moments have been rare.
Personality: Dedicated to any task and anything she commits to. Rayelin is not one to give up easily, and keeps fighting even if there is no hope. However, she is smart enough to know that some times it is better to play at meekness for hope of something better; currently she is somewhere in between these areas. She's kind to strangers, as much as she can afford to be. (still in development, guess we'll see as this progresses)
History: Rayelin is from an average family, raised in Minas Tirith. Her father is a member of the Guards, as is her older brother, while her mother has great knowledge of healing and helps those who need it. Her father and brother have tutored her in all kinds of weapons and weaponless fighting, which she is proficient at. She always wanted to belong to the Guards, as her family members, but as she is a woman, it was rather difficult. She likes to work with horses, though, and earned a place taking care of them. She was captured 8-10 months ago, having gotten lost in some fog while out riding her own horse, Moonheart, and strayed too close to Mordor. Not having broken, or saying too much in the presence of orcs or any other denizens of Mordor, she has sat languishing in her cell for the entire time. Defiant at first, she has slowly subsided, biding her time and hoping for a chance at escape.
So, I'm putting up a shortened version of Maeth's bio up as her old one is going under more renovation. Also, I changed my number of characters to two prisoners as opposed to an orc.
Name: Maethoriel, Lyglinnod, Narylfiel and Heledir.
Gender: Female
Age: Past memory
Race: Half-elf
Appearance: Dreadful in every respect of the word. Maethoriel does not keep herself up well.
Personality: Cruel, rude, self-assured, untrustworthy, completely mad
Weapons: Anything she can lay a hand on, and that's not always a requirement. It's not
History: Maethoriel was born in one of the first elven settlements, located where Laketown now sits. It's people were quickly drawn into Thranduil's court finding the forest preferable. After her mother's death her father left and Maethoriel wandered. She took up work as a hired hero, but found that being a hero was not at all what she enjoyed, so she took to mercenary work finding that it suited her quite a bit better. She met many those years, and for a time had no attachments, but she did form a friendship later with a well meaning wizard. When she found that he was in trouble she did what any friend would do, the well meaning thing - it endly poorly to say the least. All remanents of the once, only dodgy, girl were shredded to form a monstrous mockery of her previous state. She was mad, scarred for life and had left a permanent mark on the mind of those she escaped. What exactly happened, none will tell, the wizard himself tried to glean information from her mind but found himself unable to look into it more deeply he was so disgusted with the atrocities. It is said that since the incident that the woman can walk through Mordor unscathed, that a look from her will kill you, that her cane is a staff filled with magic - and she a deranged maiar, that she sold her soul because she feared death and now death will not try to take her, that she has two weaknesses that none but the wizards know of. These are rumors for the most part, and the one thing that everyone agrees upon is that Maethoriel cannot be trusted by either side.
Name: Mab
Age: 20
Appearance: Blonde hair, light skin, brown eyes
Personality: Bright headed, kind, loving, quick to laugh
History: Mab was born to a poor, but loving, Rohirric family who lived just outside the main city. She has two older brothers who were called to the city to assist in the army. Mab was to accompany them to say farwell and look around the city as she had never been before and they only had enough items for three, the soldier who came with the summons even offered to escort her home. Everything went smoothly, Mab and her brothers enjoyed their time together and tears were shed (on Mab's part) when they parted. She and the kindly soldier left and everything was going well until the second day's nightfall. Then, they were attacked. The soldier was killed, but managed to take down two orcs while Mab ran. She did not run fast enough though, and the last thing she remembered was a sharp pain in her head before she woke up in Mordor. Since then, she's been a little flighty. Days run together, she barely eats, tears stains can always be seen on her face, but - to her credit - she is still alive.
Name: Shan
Age: 22
Race: Gondorian
Appearance: Long blonde hair, tall with a thick build
History: Shan was the son of a soldier and eagerly followed in his father's tracks, much to the dismay of his doting mother. He enjoyed everything about the army, it gave him a purpose, structure, decent meals, a roof over his head and the best, most loyal friends any could ask for. It was a routine scouting mission when he was attacked, he and his friends were dragged off to the black lands, kicking and screaming all the way. For days he did not speak and he did not eat for almost two weeks, but then it crossed his mind that if he still lived then perhaps his friends did too. His attitude changed then, he was more confident, but not outwardly spiteful - it wouldn't do getting killed if he were to rescue his comrades - and he has been biding his time for the perfect moment to escape.
Here are mine (my apologies for the shortness in length, I am currently under time constraints; I need to start doing chores for the day :lol:):
Servant:
Name: Celebaen
Age: 28
Gender: Male
Appearance: He is tall in stature. He has a shoulder length charcoal mane, stubble about his face, eyes that are a deep blue that nearly look black, and many scars that reach from one end of his face to the other.
Character: Reserved, hard hearted, and shrewd with a strong will.
History: Celebaen had been born as an illegitimate son to a guard in Gondor, who did not dare care for Celebaen before he came of age as he did not want to be associated with the shameful descent of his mother. Not wanting her child to be scorned as she had been, his mother abandoned him by the guards’ lodgings, where he was found and raised to be a guard himself. Years from that date, when the enemy beset his settlement, his allies turned on him and he has not been seen since.
Prisoner:
Name: Emanon
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Race: Gondorian
Appearance: She is small in stature, with long loosely curled chestnut colored hair and eyes that are a pale blue in color.
Character: Spirited and serene but also strong willed when the occasion calls. She has a rare sense of humor.
History: Emanon is the daughter of a well respected Gondorian guard. Her parents cared for her dearly as she had been the one child granted to them during their many years of marriage. Hours before her settlement fell to the minions of Mordor, her parents were murdered while sleeping; soon afterward she was discovered by them crying on the threshold of her parents’ room. Since then she has been touched with sadness and seems to have resigned to her doom.
