Micah grinned and nodded. "Improvement already. You'll be mastering those skills in no tome," he encouraged.

He too glanced up at the setting sun. "For now," he said. "We should probably make camp for the night. This looks like as decent a spot as any."

He set his things down and started gathering sticks for the fire from nearby branches.

Elitariel nodded. It was beginning to get very dark, and the roads probably weren't the safest to travel at night. Owls began to hoot and many other night creatures began to to stir.

"I can help gather some wood." The elf thought this a good time to practice, also. Following close behind Micah, Elitariel searched for some dry sticks among the ground. She spotted a pile and grinned. Closing her eyes, she focused on the pile of wood. It had the faint purple glow around it, and shook. Then the pile moved an inch towards her, then another, and another. Then it suddenly stopped as Elitariel snapped open her eyes at the noise she just heard behind a bush.

"....Micah...", she hesitantly said. The noise grew and grew, almost like footsteps.

Micah was just filling his arms when he too heard the noise. At Elitariel's call he dropped his wood, drew his sword, and stepped between her and the noise. He was unsure what it might be but there were too many dangerouse creatures in these mountains to take a chance.

He teached behind him and placed a hand on Elitariel's wrist and took a step away from the bush. He wanted plenty of room between them and whatever it was once it showed itself.

"Just keep behind me," he told her.

Elitariel obeyed Micah's command and moved behind him, but slightly moved her head so she could see what was happening. The noise became louder and louder, closer and and closer. The tall brush behind the bush began to move. The elf held her breath in scared anticipation and moved closer to Micah, just inches from his back. The bush rattled loudly when....

A baby lion, not even a month old waddled from under the bush leaves. Its fur was matted and it tripped over sticks and twigs. The cub lifted its small eyes upward towards the two and opened its mouth. Not a growl, but a small cry came from it.

Micah let go of Elitariel and relxaed as he the small lion cub stumbled from the bushes. His sword lowered, but did not go back in it's sheath. The mother could be anywhere. The thought didn't cross Micah's mind that this cub's mother may already be dead.

He glanced back at Elitariel.

Elitariel brightened at the sight of the cub. She slowly walked in front of Micah and crouched down to the ground. The elf tucked a lock of hair behind her pointed ear before stretching out her hand to the baby lion. While doing so, she couldn't help but think in the back of her mind about the cub's mother. Is it near? Was it the one I killed?

Her eyes cautiously shifted between trees, though it was difficult to see in the dark. The cub waddled its way to the elf's hand and sniffed it. With a gleeful squeal, it rubbed it's head against her hand, just like a cat.

Micah watched but said nothing. His sword hovered over Elitariel's crouched form and his eyes, and mostly ears, kept sharp in an attempt to detect any further movement or sound. So far he had heard none.

The kitten seemed friendly. He was unsure, however, whether that meant anything or not.

The cub purred and purred as it rubbed against her hand, then over to her legs. An overwhelming sense of pity ate at Elitariel. She gently scooped up the baby lion and held it against her chest. Standing back up, she turned around to face Micah.

"I-I think I killed its mother..." She spoke with a sad tone. The cub nuzzled against the elf's neck for warmth and closed its tiny eyes. She couldn't just leave this babe behind....

"I feel like it's my responsibility to care for it..." Elitariel glanced down lovingly and patted it's back.

Micah scammed the dark forest around them one last time. "Don't take this wrong... But I hope you did because O don't want a mother lion coming to get her cub back."

He relaxed and let his sword slide back into it's sheath. He reached out and scratched the little kitten on the head. With a smile he looked back to Elitariel. "Well, looks like it's a trio now."

At this he leaned down and gathered, once agian, the sticks he had dropped.

Elitariel nodded with a smile, "Yes, it does look like a trio now..." The elf held the cub against her chest with one arm, and helped Micah pick up the dropped sticks with her other free arm. She walked over to a clearing away from trees and laid the sticks in a pile. It was almost pitch black now, the only light coming from the moon. "This seems like a good spot. The trees should block some night wind."

The cool wind blew and Elitariel shivered. The baby lion whined and nuzzled even more into the elf. She hushed the creature and rubbed its fur, hoping to get it warm.

Micah put his arm load of wood down. "This spot will do nicel," he agreed with a nod. He noticed the shivers and pulled the bedroll off the top of his pack, unrolled his blanket and offered it to Elitariel.

He then commenced to start a fire.

Elitariel took the offered blanket and felt the warm rush to her face, making her blush. Luckily it's dark out...

The elf sat cross-legged on the ground, huddled together with the lion, blanket wrapped around both of them. The only part of her body visible was her face. A lump moved side to side under the blankets and she laughed at the cub trying to find a comfortable spot. She watched Micah start the fire and was very pleased when it began. The warmth felt wonderful against her face and the cub finally settled down.

"Micah..", she started out, "I can't thank you enough. For everything. For protection, for food, shelter..." Her voiced trailed on as her eyes focused on the raging fire.

Micah paused from his tending the fire and glanced back at her, a look almost as if he was confused. "Well, I couldn't just leave you out here by yourself in the woods. No supplies or experience in surviving on your own..." He shrugged and tossed another stick in the flames. "I just did what anyone would do."

Elitariel replied by simply smiling. She was very grateful for everything, had never experienced this much kindness in her life. A thankful sigh left her lips as she patted the ground in front of her, checking to see if it was dry. The ground was indeed dry, and she laid down on the ground next to the fire. She laid the blanket on top of her and the cub buried itself underneath. The warmth and crackling of the fire soothed Elitariel, and she slowly drifted off to sleep.

(Indeed. Seems like a good time to skip forward)

Micah leaned up against a tree opposite the fire as Elitariel. He leaned his head back, rested his hand on the hilt of his sword and closed his eyes. He would feel safer once they got out of the mountains and into the shire. There were far less creatures of concern there.

The next morning a cool chill nipped the air and a lingering blanket of morning fog swirled between the trees. The fire was nothing but black coals.

The bright morning sun woke up Elitariel the next morning. Her dreams made her restless during sleep. Images and thoughts of a growing evil power bore down on her last night. She woke with a start, heart racing, panting. Then, realized it was just a dream. The elf took in her surroundings and only saw light, not the darkness that over encumbered her dreams. The cub was curled between the bends of her legs, now also awakening. It stretched and gave a loud, high pitched yawn.

Elitariel pushed off the blanket and looked across the now ash-laden circle of grass. She felt comforted at the sight of Micah and was ready for the day's adventure. Running a hand through her messy hair, trying to tame it, she asked, "Sleep well? Ready for the road again?"
