Just a Middle-earth based RP (generally set in the Rhovanion area, for the moment)

Varquenor sighed, legs dangling from the branch he was sitting on. It looked as though the travellers had taken a new route on which to trade. It was bad for business. Well. His business, at any length. No one respected the honest bandit anymore...
But luck, it seemed, was on his side. The steady hoofbeats and tell-tale thuds of cart wheels could be heard. Somewhat cheerfully, he fitted an arrow to his bowstring and held the weapon ready.

The trees, though thinly fanned out, were quite tall, providing many limbs with which to keep the hot sun's rays from filtering through. As she drew deeper into the forest, the air around her grew cooler, but was still suffocatingly humid. Summer, it seemed, was at its peak.
Eilwynn sat alone in the front of the sturdy wagon, the leather straps of the mare which pulled it along laying loosely in her left hand's grip. Her amber eyes, dark lidded and alert, calmly gathered in her surroundings. Because of the warm weather, her cloak and gloves were tucked away under the blanket which covered the other contents of the wagon--mere instruments of killing and a few changes of clothes--and instead she rolled up the sleeves of her white peasant blouse, trying every method possible to keep cool. She prayed the trip through the forest would be a short one.

The wagon came into view, pulled by a single horse, and led by a solitary woman, which was especially unusual. But even so, he could not afford to be picky. He released the arrow to a space between the axle and wheel, which caused the wheel to be unable to continue, unless one wanted to break the axle. He heard the thud, and dropped easily to the ground, landing quietly on his feet before the horse.
"Excuse me, my lady, but if you wish to pass, I must request a toll," he said with an arrogant grin.

Eilwynn was somewhat startled at first, sitting bolt upright when the man had jumped down infront of her. She threw him a long and clear calculating stare, not speaking at first. He was obviously no man of authority by looks or behavior, thusly couldn't possibly be an official.
She spoke calmly, " This isn't a private road, nor is it taxed. Kindly dislodge that arrow and let me be on my way."

"I'm afraid I couldn't possibly. You may be on your way in a moment, excepting, of course, if you refuse to pay. In which case I will be forced to take it from you personally. It's a very discouraging business and I would appreciate your cooperation."
She bothered him immensely, and he couldn't place it. She almost seemed familar.

She couldn't refrain the small grin that tugged amusedly at the corner of her lips.
" Then I must have to discourage you from doing your 'business', and be on my way. I pay no tolls on public untaxed roads. Excuse me."
Still holding the leather reins in her hand, she simply slid off the wagon and removed the arrow herself, casting an indifferent glance him. It could almost be said that she was half-testing him. Or.. daring him more like.

He stepped closer to her horse, drawing a dagger as he did so, and cut the reins. He smirked. "You're being difficult for the sake of it, love, and it's not much helping, even if I am so easily entertained."

She crossed her arms, canting her head to one side as the mare bit Varquenor's hand.
Eilwynn stepped forward, unsheathing a long double-edged dagger.
" I'm afraid you've not only upset me, but my friend here, thief. Be on your way."

Elenanna and Bellethiel cantered swiftly through the forest, neither stopping, for they had a message to deliver. Elenana heard voices ahead, and she pulled her mare to a stop. Bellethiel did the same, and she whispered, "Milady?"
She shushed her handmaiden, and tired to listen further, before silently moving SHadowpax toward the forest. Bellethiel rolled her eyes, and muttered, "Your mother is going to be annoyed if this message isn't delievered in time, Milady." She referred to the Lady of the Wood.
Eleanna said, "I'd rather not lose any more time if something's going on ahead, and ride through the trees." Bellethiel rose an eyebrow, before she nodded, and their mares started to ride through the forest.

"Yes, well your friend here is rather rude herself," he countered, "and it's obvious to me where she got it from. There is honor among thieves, I'll have you know. For instance, I could have killed you to begin with and it might have saved me the trouble. But that would have been excrutiatingly rude, and I refuse to lower to your level. And so," he said, sheathing the dagger in favor of his scimitar, "I must again request your cooperation. This time it will be more than a strip of leather that is harmed."
He moved away from the mare under the threat of being bitten again. One bloody hand was more than enough for swordplay.

She paused, inadvertently blocking out his voice as her ears strained to here something else. Hoofbeats? Under the circumstances, she didn't know whether to welcome them or to take heed; she hoped for the sake of her mission that they didn't belong to any of his friends.
Eilwynn threw him a reproachful glare, her voice now marked with slight annoyance.
" I think I'd rather have you kill me than further subject me to the foul manner of your charm. No matter how threatening you ask, thief, you shall recieve nothing."

"Milady, look!" Bellethiel said. Elenanna turned her head, and saw the two. She slowed her mare down to a walk after Bellethiel, and Elenanna's silver hair seemed to shine as the sunlight streamed through the trees to reflect on it.

"Foul?" He laughed. "You wound me, my lady. How very hurtful of you. But nonetheless, we will more likely be waiting here for a Valar's age unless you comply. I could take your feisty horse, I'm sure she is worth as much or more than you carry on your person. And aside from that, there are plenty of people in these woods that are in need of transportation. Or food. It matters not to me," he added nonchalantly. He waved the blade. "We can all use a challenge, don't you think?"
But in the back of his mind, he could feel someone approaching, the hoofbeats growing louder. Friends of her's, I wonder?

She was beginning to lose her patience, and as far as their delicate game of small-talk (if it could be called that) was going, she could not find it the least bit entertaining.
She calmly stepped forward, slowly closing the distance between the two as she shook her head, gesturing to the mare.
" You could try to take her, but I doubt she'd have you as a master. "
She waited, inwardly hoping he'd strike so that she could finish him and be on her way--she did not have time to wait a 'Valar's age.'

"A pity, then..." he smacked the mare's rump with the flat of his scimitar, sending her galloping off, and then turned back to face Eilwynn. He placed the tip of the blade at her throat. "I'm not averse to killing for what I want, my lady."

"Bellethiel, stay here." Elenanna whispered as she dismouted her mare. She ran toward the edge of the road, her feet not making a sound, and she placed her hand on her sword, ready to draw it.
