Onnekaz inclined his head and nodded. ''and the rest of you?'' he enquired.
''We might as well get introductions over with now, before we're joined by the rider and have to start all over again''
''What of your friend? Is he a mute?''

Viola simply stared before she said, "I am Viola. I've been sent on an errand and was told my mission would be made easier if I were to find a party in this town." Technically what she said was true; she simply avoided or omitted minor details like being sent by the royal family though chances are these mongrels probably had never heard of them. Or that she was an intelligence agent. "You shall not worry. I do not need to know your names. I am quite content without them." She did not care for names or who they were, in fact. As long as she didn't have to worry about being stabbed behind her back. Which was quite rich considering her hand had never left the hilt of the dagger.

((Okie dokie, lets get back on track...sorry for not posting in a couple days.
But before we get back to our scheduled programming, I just have a quick request: be sure to post with a bit of substance. You don't have to write a novel (in fact, please don't :P), but try to write at least a paragraph or two. Its so much more interesting when I can read about what the characters are thinking, and it gives the RP a lot more 'umph' :) ))

"My name is Kadeb" he spoke to the elf, more than slightly miffed. "I am not a mute." The truth was, he was more concentrated on inspecting these...travelers than he was on listening to their introductions. In this day and age you couldn't be too careful. Hunger and fear made men desperate, and desperate men were dangerous. He'd learned that more than once, and it was a lesson he didn't want to repeat. Still, as wary as he was, he couldn't find anything off about these two people. The elf was deadly, perhaps, but only dangerous to his enemies. As far as he could tell, he hadn't yet qualified as an enemy yet. And the boy, well...he might have a sharp little sticker, but the kid was no match for a grown human, much less a shape shifter. No, these two strangers might not be totally safe, but they weren't a threat.

The third stranger, however, sounded off a few warning bells. She rode in on a horse, for one. A horse! The only people who could still afford horses were the filthy rich. Royals, perhaps, or whatever it was that the humans called their rulers? Most everyone else had either sold theirs early or eaten it later. Kedab looked at it hungrily, thinking about how full he could get off the beast. A full belly. He hadn't had one months. He glanced at the rider, frustrated. She didn't look like the kind of person who would let someone eat her mount. No, the way she gripped her knife, and the relaxed but balanced stance of a fighter; This human girl might be a problem.

Still, Kadeb didn't sense any immediate danger, and he was good at recognizing and immediate threats. Perhaps he could just play this out cautiously, make the mandatory introductions, and be on his merry way.

"We have no goal," he said warily, "except to find a place that can give us reliable food and water." He glance around. "The same as the rest of you, I am guessing?"

Onnekaz held back a smirk. He was slightly amused that he was annoying the one that just named himself as Kadeb. ''Pity that irritating people is the main source of humour I get nowadays'' he thought to himself. He inspected the others. The boy, as Onnekaz had first thought wasn't much of a threat, and in any case he had done nothing to warrant an attack by any of them though he knew he couldnt lower his guard for a second.
He then took in the details of Viola. He could tell by the way she held onto the weapon that she was no stranger to battle. He also sensed that there was more to her than she let on. He wasnt suprised, he had a feeling that everyone there, himself included, were leaving out ''details'' about themselves.
By his reckoning Arken seemed the most likeable, though he shouldnt underestimate him. He decided that for the time being at least, there was no immediate threat of a fight but the still kept a firm grip on his bow and was ready to reach for an arrow at a moments notice.
He realised that he couldn't stand there thinking to himself. When he spoke he chose his words carefully: '' Yes, i'm also searching such a place. '' He wanted this meeting to reach a conclusion as he wasnt satisfied with standing out in the open with potential enemies. '' To a decision then, we all share a common goal, should we band together in order to make things easier, or should we part ways?'' He knew that Viola would be more inclined to becoming a group and Arken and the mute, as Onnekaz now reffered to him in his head, were already traveling together and as far as he could tell the boy had a better chance of surviving if he joined them.
''Well, what do you all say?''

Matthias just watched as the others talked, occasionally noting a specific detail pertaining to their persona. Viola seemed battle-ready, but also like she had something to hide. Onnekaz was also holding something back, but that was deeper, and sadder, maybe. He didn't really want to know. Arken seemed friendly, almost too friendly. And Kedeb seemed to be mocking them all.

(Sorry, homework to do, I'll edit this post later. More to follow!)

[ -dives in- I didn't miss the party, did I? :P

Name: Alyvia
Gender: Female
Age: 26
Race: Half-blood mage
Profession: Thief
Apparel/Appearance: Short stature, slight build, with agility to make up for her lack of strength during armed or unarmed combat. Clear, grey eyes and a tangled mess of coppertone hair, usually tied back a little less than neatly.
Personality: The straight-talking, no-nonsense kind that doesn't like playing games with people; her ability to think of her feet is balanced by an inherent recklessness.
History: Never knew anything of her parents, but one of them must have been from some kind of magical heritage 'cause she found she had weak magical ability that worked best when she was creating illusions, which came in useful considering her occupation. Started out in the crime business in her early adolescence where, because she was a young urchin, she didn't seem particularly suspicious. As she got older, she started taking on jobs that entailed a little more than pickpocketing the rich.]

Adrenaline surged through her veins for the first time in what seemed like ages as she ran, hell for leather, in whichever direction looked the best. To be perfectly fair, after the fires had swept the place, that place didn't really look like a forest any more; the ghostly shaped of charred trees were less than friendly in the poor light. They might not have any leaves, but the things sure managed to block out what little light they had left out there. Just another thing to add to Alyvia's list of grievances. Still, a lack of light meant she'd have to make camp somewhere soon and settle down for the night, even if she didn't intend to sleep. What was there that waited for her in sleep? Nightmares? Dreams of days long gone? Either way, they were worthless. Better to keep running, to stay on the road - or off it, as it may be.

After the drought and sickness had spread and cities had been decimated, the underworld of crime had gained power dealing the most important things about: rations of food and water and medication. They hadn't dealt much, less still that was genuine, and the prices they'd demanded had been extortionate. People, being desperate and seeking hope no matter how futile their cause, bought their wares, simply for lack of other options. Despite the dramatic population decrease, her former comrades had made themselves quite wealthy selling stolen goods to the hungry and the sick - just before they'd kicked her out of their little exclusive 'club'. It was only a bit of coin, what did they care?

On her own, Alyvia was reduced to a child again - a pickpocket and professional thief. It didn't matter to her much, it had been pretty much the same for her all her life: stealing, being chased, laughing and running away... only nowadays, there was less of the laughing and much more of the running, especially if she carried her rations with her. There was no telling what the folk out here would do to feel the satisfaction of a full stomach.

Slowly to a steady walk, Alyvia watched the edge of the tree line and saw figures in the distance and listened for any accompanying voices. Sure enough, there it was: a cacophony of different pitches and words. Raising a questioning eyebrow she continued, wondering vaguely if she'd approached the edge of a village and, of course, whether or not any of the band atop the hill had anything she wouldn't mind possessing herself. Once a thief, always a thief.

Well this is awkward Arken thought to himself. Personally he would love to have more people join. People might start talking more than this shapeshifter here was. And if the shapeshifter didn't consider these people dangerous (or at least didn't stab them to death -or something- yet) Arken was fine with it as well. He would rather trust the silent one's judgement than his own, since growing up in a monastery offered him little opportunity to judge people. First they didn't talk. Second all that came out their mouths when they did talk was "one should" and "one should not" and virtues and whatnot, which equated to having said nothing at all. The only thing of substance, perhaps, was the combat training he received as part of "strengthening the body in order to better the self".

And maybe the food. Oh he missed food.

Looking over at the shapeshifter once more, and ascertaining that he wasn't going to fly over and stab someone, he turned back with a smile and replied, "I would love to welcome you all and travel together. It's going to get late soon, so why don't we all find somewhere and rest up a bit hm? We can also get to know each other better. Personally I'd suggest that village down there. See if we can find anything useful, even though it's probably been combed over a bunch by others, but hey its worth a try!"

'' Well now we're getting somewhere'', Onnekaz thought to himself.
He wasn't too sure about going to the village though. He doubted they would find anything as it was likely that scavengers had taken anything worth taking. However he knew that staying out in the open for anyone around to see wasn't a good idea.
''I agree'' he said. He was addressing Arken now, ''Staying out here isnt ideal, and we might even find some extra provisions.
Even though he was an elf, well a half elf but elf all the same he was starting to get hungry. During the years he had been able to go for time without eating however during his travels he was able to pickup skills when in the wild and could find sustinence when he needed it.
He wondered what he would be able to find in the village and if there were any people there.
As he was thinking to himself he had a feeling of eyes upon him. He turned around slowly and surveyed his surroundings , careful not to make sudden movements that would alert the potential enemy or enemies that he as aware of them.
As he was looking he thought he could see a figure in the distance. He wasn't completely sure though. If there was someone there they were skilled in being stealthy.
''Shall we move on?'' he said to everyone all the while keeping an eye on where he thought he had seen movement with his bow in hand. He saw no need in alerting the others until he was sure of what he had seen. The last thing he needed was for others to think he was overly dramatic.
'' This will be an interesting time'' he thought to himself.

Matthias walked forward, joining Onnekaz. If he squinted, he could see something, just a blip coming towards them. "Isn't that. . ." His mind snapped back to the present. "Yes, I think we should. Move on, I mean. If--If I can come with you?" He looked into their eyes, half pleading. He knew, that although he had his father's sword, he wouldn't be able to last for much longer. Sure, he had survived for a very long time without help, but that was before the nightmares. The nightmares that came in the dead of night, sneaking up as quiet as a mouse, and then arriving as fierce as a lion. But more horrifying.

Evelyn straightened up from his foraying as a woman on a horse came riding through the village. A horse! He hadn't seen a horse on those streets since the days of prosperity -a much longer time ago than many cared to admit. The only ones who could afford horses now were members of the highest, highest authority. He considered. Perhaps ties to high authority, or perhaps just a skilled thief. Either way, she was gone like a breeze, going up to the hill just outside town.

Evelyn squinted, then pulled his glasses down to clean them on an inside patch of his tunic. Yes, he wasn't imagining things. There were people up on the hill, and the woman on the horse was joining them. Soon he could hear clear voices floating down towards him. Not that he was able to make out what they were saying, but there were more people around since there had been horses! He was getting ready to move towards them when movement caught his eye. Another woman, moving the same direction and apparently unaware of his presence. She too was studying the group on the hill. The voices neared, and Evelyn saw that they had started to move in his direction.

Well, what the hell, he thought, as he stepped gingerly over charred wood towards them.

Kadeb was way out of his comfort zone. Some huge cosmic coincidence had pulled together this ragtag group of strangers, and now they wanted to form a band. Kadeb compared the pros and cons. One one hand, he wasn't sure he trusted these people to keep watch while he slept. The temptation to slit a man's throat and make off in the night with his possessions wasn't easy to resist. Hell, if it came down to it, Kadeb would certainly take a knife to any of these strangers. Food was another problem. It'd be hard to feed a group this big when all the big game was gone. A couple scrawny rabbits wasn't going to sustain this many people, and that was considering if they could find them. Kadeb had enough problems finding food as it was. So far he'd lived mostly on bugs and plants. It wasn't a very appetizing diet, but it kept him alive. And water...he couldn't forget about the water. Thanks to his shape shifting pedigree, he could eat tough foods that others couldn't digest, but everyone needed water. In this place, water was invaluable. People died protecting their water source.

However, there was strength in numbers to consider. The more people you had, the more powerful you were. Numbers alone were often a deterrent for thieves and bandits. And with more people to take watch, there's more time to sleep, and more time to travel per day.

...And the numbers kept growing. Two newcomers, one from out of the town, and the other from the tree line, were walking towards the group. Perhaps they wanted to join as well? As far as cosmic coincidences went, this was a particularly strange one. He'd let the others deal with these two.

Kadeb gave a "Hmph" and a slight nod, both signs of his approval. Let them join He thought. Better to be thirsty then dead at a bandit's feet. . He knew that he could abandon the group if need be, but until then the protection of numbers would give him a bit more security then he had as of late.

Onnekaz had his suspicions confirmed when a figure came out of the tree line plain for even those who didn't have elf eyes to see. Also, to add to it there was another coming from the village they were headed to. From what he could see, the first was a woman looked travel worn as if she had been travelling for almost as long as he had, the other was just a child, though he had a bag that he was clutching, Onnekaz wondered what was inside whether it was a weapon or something dear of his he had managed to salvage. He wondered how the child had survived this long, as he had no visible weapon to defend himself with, though judging from the appearance of Mattius that was no guarantee of safety nowadays. They were each now within talking distance. Onnekaz waited for them to speak first. He assumed that Arken would make the introductions. His eyes were more on the woman as she seemed to present the biggest threat from the two. "Hello," he said addressing them both.

Lifting her eyes, from where they were scanning the horizon, as if her gaze was heavy, Alyvia turned to face whoever it was that possessed the audacity to stare at her without even the pretence of surprise or caution. That which decorated the half Elf's face seemed to be only mild curiosity and she didn't like it, not at all. Years of thinking on her feet lead to instincts that were unorthodox but usually right; she trusted them, even when they seemed most irrational. Especially when they seemed most irrational.

Due to either some sixth sense or simply the lack of people, eyes seemed drawn to her and something beyond her. Ah, she saw him now: a man of middle years, combing through the wreckage of the nearby village to see if there were anything worth carrying with him. Admittedly she didn't see his like every day but, she reminded herself firmly, he didn't seem threatening in any way, so all was well... for the present. Alyvia had seen many greater men and women than herself fall at the hand of an innocuous-looking assassin and, in any case, she didn't care for assumptions. They lead down dark roads.

Just then, though, they certainly weren't a threat to her; those people, however, quite probably could have been. It was impossible to know for certain. After the ‘end of days’, people didn't trust others. It wasn't that they had less trust, they had none. Brother had fought brother when fire and drought and famine reigned, making for a time when the only person anyone knew they could trust implicitly was themselves. That coupled with the fact that people of her persuasion were frowned upon in general society and you had a recipe for... well, some interesting consequences if she stuck around long enough to find out. Alyvia didn't like her chances of coming out of a fight with this mismatched band, even if some of them were idling simpletons looking for a sword to keep them safe. There was a smaller chance of being attacked in a group but she had far more confidence in herself than she did those she observed carefully from a distance.

Picking her way carefully to the edge of the trees, avoiding any branches or likewise that might snap and draw unnecessary attention to her presence, Alyvia watched as eyes darted to her and then away again, loathe to rest there for too long should they find danger or another catastrophe in the making.

Amidst the talk and fractured conversation, one word drifted towards her as if it was aimed so. Almost attempting to pin the Elf down with a gaze of steely grey, Alyvia waited for the half Elf to say something else, to give her a reason to vent the sudden rush of frustration she felt. So few people remained to travel the globe and yet she had the misfortune to be the one running, oblivious, into a whole group of them. Though there numbers were few, she couldn't recall seeing a group larger in most recent months. A first, perhaps, but not one she'd be celebrating. People made her apprehensive.

barely keeping the scowl of distaste from her face, Alyvia looked away from the Elf's youthful face and muttered something under her breath that could've been curses.

“I'm not here to make friends,” she told the Elf, her voice hard but matter-of-fact instead of being abruptly offensive; the statement was simple, to the point and without ornament, as it was meant to be. “If no-one objects, I'll be on my way.”

Viola's gaze followed that of her new-found "companions" and saw the newcomers lurking about. She decided to reserve any judgment she had regarding them until later considering that her encounter with the group had started similar to theirs. No, her mind went to ponder the next path of this...group. It appeared the shapeshifter has taken upon himself to act as the leader. She had no problem with that. By no means did she want that burden. Especially since she knew next to nothing of what's going on. He, on the other hand, seemed where to get some food and water. Maybe that's the new home the king was referring to. As the two strangers approached, she lowered the perception around her to fade into the background.

"Be on your way then" Kadeb glared at newcomer. If she had not wanted to be a member of this merry band of travelers, then why the hell did she approach them? It would have been easy for her to simply walk around and carry on. The fact that she had come within speaking distance suggested that she wasn't completely opposed to companionship. Be that as it may, Kadeb didn't want to waste anymore time frolicking around. He was even starting to think this spot was jinxed, considering how many people he had met here at the same time by pure coincidence. He'd had enough chance encounters for the day, and he was fed up with it.

"We're moving on" he said to the new girl. It was an executive decision to continue traveling, but he didn't care if anyone tried to challenge it. They would either follow him or not, and either way was fine with him. "You can travel with us, if you please. If not, then by all means be on your merry way."

He glanced around quickly before he started moving. The one stranger from town was still approaching the group, but he wasn't so far off that he wouldn't be able to catch up. He might have to jog to do it, Kadeb though with a smirk, but he'd catch up if that's what he wanted. And so the journey begins he thought to himself Goddess help me
