(Mind if I start? :))

Not one person heard the soft tapping of a crutch as it's owner made his way down a busy London cobblestone street, the boy dodging pedestrians as best he could, or else others moved out of his way to let him pass by. A few of the kinder gentle men tipped their hats to him, and he nodded back to them, but the men put their hats back on their heads quickly because of the lightly falling snow that floated down from the slightly overcast sky that hovered above the city. The pine tree fragrance wafted down the street as one working man tugged a Christmas tree down the street, stopping now and then to catch his breath and then pick up the sled again. Young children danced and ran around, always skirting around a horse-drawn carriage pulling some wealthy person who did not want to suffer the cold weather outside. Wreaths sprinkled with holly berries adorned the plain wooden doors of various shops and banks, their metal wrought-iron signs creaking lazily in the gentle breeze. Carols drifted down the street, their melodic voices brightening up the day, but unfortunately Crutchie had no money of his own to spare as a treat to the poor souls trying to enlighten the world with music. He passed their hopeful eyes with a sad nod of his head, and continued on his way to the abandoned warehouse where he lived some of the time. He tipped his head up into the sky, blinking to get rid of the white powdery snowflakes that invaded his vision. It was almost night, and the warehouse was too far away. He would probably have to make do with some alcove, or some forsaken doorstep of an empty building or house. At least it could protect him from the wind that usually blew through the streets with cold, grim ferocity at night. Crutchie moved his crutch to a more comfortable position, and continued walking down the street, his feet and the crutch going tap tap, but even that sound was getting muffled as more snow fell. He shivered in his light cotton shirt and vest, though he supposed he should be used to the cold by now. Crutchie had lived on his own more nights than he had with the other boys. He looked out across the other side of the street, watching the people hurry into their warm homes and settle down by their cozy fireplaces, probably in a soft chair. Crutchie saw the candle light in an upper window go out suddenly, as if snuffed out by a gust of wind. He turned in front of him, not realizing he had paused again, and that was when he walked into two young woman, both dressed more richer than he could ever be. He fell down onto the cold, hard stones, his crutch rolling away toward the brick building to his right. Crutchie looked up at the two women, decidedly embarrassed. He usually watched where he was going, and it was just his luck to fall down in front of rich people.

[So, I assumed that you meant both Alice and Hazel in your post, Harthad. Nice post by the way! :) ]

“My ladies!” Snowflakes fell on her blond hair and cap and a chilly wind cut through her tin coat, as Sarah hurried down the crowded street, following the two young ladies. She carried a large parcel in her hands, which contained a purchase of Lady Alice and tried to close the gap between her and the two sisters, whom she had lost only a moment before. Only then she noticed that the two sisters were standing still, staring at someone at their feet. Sarah lifted her skirts and rushed over to the girl’s side, immensely relieved to see that nothing had happened to them. As they didn’t take the carriage, it was her job to take care of the sisters and bring them home safely, especially Hazel, with her feeble health.
“Lady Alice.. lady Hazel..” she looked hesitantly from the sister’s, to the crutch that lay in the first layer of snow and the boy that had obviously ran into them. Sarah immediately felt a pang of pity for the boy who did not only look skinny but was also poorly dressed. “Are you alright?” she asked friendly. “Did you hurt yourself?”

Post subject:  Re: Victorian London RPG

She would never admit it if asked, but the reason Alice loved the Christmas season had nothing to do with presents. Well, everything and nothing.

She, of course, loved receiving gifts, but she almost loved giving them more. Giving them to her sister, that is. She loved guessing what Hazel might want, dropping little hints and trying to make each year's gifts better than the last. The haunting fact that each Christmas might actually be Hazel's last weighed heavily on Alice's mind, and for this reason alone she strived to make each one memorable for her poor little sister. Poor Hazel, stricken with seizures and unable to ever tell a soul. It was considered a flaw in the blood, something that would make society shun their family and ruin any prospects for marriage the sisters might have had.

And yet Hazel had never uttered a single ungrateful word about her condition, to Alice's knowledge. For this reason alone she thought that Hazel deserved the best Christmasses money could buy. She was already thinking of what to get her this year when they were slammed into by a filthy street urchin.

Hazel and Sarah looked concerned, but Alice looked down her nose at the child, laying there pathetically in the snow. "Watch where you're walking!" she snapped before turning away. "Come, Hazel, Sarah. We've lots to do and certainly no time to waste on such people."

Hazel gave Alice a stern look, her eyes looking more sunken than usual into her pale features. Had she been getting thinner? Alice would have to go tell Cook to make Hazel's portions at supper bigger--the last thing she needed was to fade away into nothing. "Alice, please," she said. "He didn't mean to."

Alice rolled her eyes. "We really must be going. We did promise Mamma that we would be back for tea, remember?" She met Sarah's eyes, as if challenging the maid to go against her wishes.

(Thanks, Will! :))

"I--I'm fine, thanks," Crutchie stuttered as he rolled over, reaching out his hand to pick up his crutch again. He grasped the solid honey-wooden handle and dragged it over to where he had sat up, shaking the crisp snow off his hat. He tried to ignore the older girl's comments, knowing that he had really expected no less from the snobby rich upperclasswomen. Crutchie slid his crutch back under his arm where it rightfully belonged, and pushed himself up, using the stick for support. It was then that he could really see who he had bumped into. The oldest sister (he assumed they were sisters, anyway, they looked more or less alike) had almost a mane of golden blond hair, with brown eyes she now placed somewhat disdainfully on his skinny form. The other, hovering behind wore a maid's dress and apron, with a white cap covering her light brown hair. She was the nicer of the three, Crutchie supposed, with her soft green eyes studying him, concerned. He stood up, bowing a bit clumsily, as one can with a crutch.

"I'm sorry, misses, for bumping into you. Merry Christmas!" He smiled at them, trotting past the threesome on his way to find a warm doorstep.

Sarah cringed almost visibly at the harsh words, which Alice spoke. She studied the boy, who'd now scrambled back to his feet, once more with a worried look in her eyes. She wondered what he was doing all alone on the street at this hour and if he was going home to his family. In such situations, confronted with the sharp contrast between the fortunate few, who were rich and had nothing to wish for, and the poor working class, Sarah couldn't help but realise how lucky she was, however frustrating her circumstances could be.
Sarah's eyes met those of Lady Alice, who had made perfectly clear that they weren't to waste anymore time here. "But.." she said, intending to express her thoughts, but she didn't finish her sentence. It was in her nature to help other in need, but then she only knew Alice's temper all too well and it was not her place to argue with her. So she cast her eyes down and spoke no more, as she followed the two sisters.

Jonty was in relatively high spirits. He was off to spend the evening attempting to convince various important figures that yes, he'd make a wonderful assistant if they'd be willing to take him on. None of them had agreed to it in the past, but they still always bought him wine. That was quite all right by his standards, and it was well worth a touch of humiliation now and then.

He was still pondering these most commonplace events when he saw a small figure go stumbling into a group of ladies further up the street. He watched the exchange from a distance, though he could tell the boy was just a dirty street urchin. Shame, really, that they had to bother such fine people.

"Ladies," he greeted as he caught up to them. "I hope that boy wasn't bothering you. I can give him a stern word, if you like." The boy hadn't gone far, inhibited as he was by his crutch. Jonty realised he hadn't the slightest idea what such a stern word would entail, but if they wished it, he'd think of something, being the gentleman that he was.
