When the sky becomes the sea
And the oceans are above
What do we live for
When there's nobody to love?

When they find themselves trapped into a life of servitude aboard the feared Flying Dutchman, our pirates must figure out a way to become human again or risk becoming a part of the sea forever.

For a long time, there was nothing but crushing darkness. There was no sound either, which made it all the more frightening. Time did not seem to exist in this moment because they were in the abyss – transitioning into what would become their new lives. They were taken from death and now served him. Ferren had heard stories about how cruel and merciless this man – this monster – was, but never in a thousand years did she think she would be under his command.

Even though her entire body was paralyzed, she was still conscious and was able to reflect on what had happened. During a battle at sea she had been killed – that much was clear. But how many others were there? She wondered if she was the only one subjected to this fate; if any others from the Pearl’s crew had died too. She had been so foolish to not watch where she was going and got separated from Rorke – did he miss her? – and a blade was driven through her abdomen by one of the fish creatures.

It dawned on her that she would be one of those putrid things now – crusty and fused with barnacles, shells… whatever else lurked in the ocean’s depths. It would have made her pulse race if she still had one.

A sudden force was pulling her body backwards. Ferren tried to scream but water only filled her mouth, pouring into her lungs and causing even more pressure on her form. She couldn’t drown because she was already dead, but the sensations were extremely unpleasant. The force was even more insistent and soon she was pulled from the water entirely and thrown against the hard floorboards. She spit out the water, emptying it from her body and glanced around at the many unforgiving faces glaring at her.

So this was the Flying Dutchman – it certainly lived up to the terrifying reputation it had been given and as she sat there like an object on display, it became clear that this was a fate worse than death.

Guinevere coughed and spluttered seawater, gasping for air, her hands splayed flat against the wooden boards of the deck. Her hair hung in slick, dripping wet tendrils around her face as she looked up and around, searching for some sign that she wasn’t the only one who had been taken. Her gaze soon fell upon Ferren, and then the youngest Summers girl, Angel, who was sobbing uncontrollably, her cries nearly as raw as screams. The girl was terrified, and for good reason; Jones’ crew of sea monsters stood circled around them, amusement and hatred showing in their regard as they prepared to take the newcomers into their keeping.

Guin remembered how she had died; she’d been throttled, a pair of barnacled hands squeezing and draining the life out of her body. Her last memory before the crushing oblivion of the deep. Now this – now this. There was one thing to be glad for: Cairbre was not here among the numbers of the dead. He was alive, he had been spared. Guin’s breath shuddered within her throat as she closed her eyes for a moment, thanking God, if he existed within this terrible place, that it had been her and not Cairbre.

Suddenly, there was a sharp tug on her arm, and Guin turned her face towards Angel, who was now clinging to her; Angel’s skin was deadly pale as she whimpered helplessly, looking as if she might at any moment be sick. “Are we dead?” she demanded. “Are we dead?”

All Guin could do was nod. “Yes,” she said quietly, letting Angel hold onto her. She glanced towards Ferren, helping her up with her free hand, giving her friend a small smile, no light in her eyes.

The last memory Joe had was of falling asleep while gently swinging in his hammock aboard the Pearl. His dreams had been pleasant and never once had he woken up, not even when two creatures (poor souls now stuck working for Davy Jones) had found their way down to the lower decks during the battle and killed him in his sleep. The next thing he knew, he was waking up by being thrown roughly down onto the hard (and was that slime?) deck of the ship. It took him a second to figure out where he was and even then he wasn't completely sure. First he was gazing up into the air. The sails looked different... they weren't black. Were they moss-covered? Or was that more slime? What had happened to the Pearl to make it so slimey?

He blinked and shook himself, tossing water from his dark, damp hair, and propped himself up onto his elbows. Was he drunk? Was he still dreaming? His eyes latched on to a few familiar people and he leaned in toward the closest one to him who happened to be Angel. "Oi, what happened? I'm still dreaming, aye... but I won't complain to have such beautiful wome... eugh..." his eyes landed on a heavy, barnacle-encrusted creature who was standing behind Angel. "Bloody hell, what is that?" His eyes opened wider as he realized that they were surrounded by such creatures and he scrambled closer to the three women. That was when he felt a dull achy pain in his chest and looked down. His shirt was torn. It looked like an even cut right over his heart - it was the cut a sword would make as it was being pushed into his chest. He paled as realization slowly dawned on him and he started putting the pieces together.

Ferren stood up the best she could on the slippery deck. She had been so disoriented beneath the water that she felt dizzy now – moreso than usual. It took her a while to “get her sea legs” as they said, and for the moment she was like a newborn fawn trying to grasp the concept of standing steadily and not collapsing back down.

Of course it was made no easier with Jones’ crewmen standing around, mocking and tossing insults to the four new additions. They quickly fell silent when the sound of a steady thump knocked against the deck. The men began parting and there he was – the heartless b@stard – looking as nonchalant as could be. As though his men had not just killed four innocent souls and bent them to his own will.

“Well, seems we’ve got ourselves a couple of ladies here,” he laughed, circling the four and shoving Joe’s shoulder with his crab claw hand. He snorted and moved to take a look at the actual women standing together, huddled against each other for support. “Congratulations, you’ve found yerselves aboard the Flying Dutchman – the finest ship to ever traverse the afterlife.” The octopus tentacles reached out to push Angel’s hair back and grip her thin face with suction cups.

“And if you look to the starboard side, ye’ll find yer mates have abandoned you,” said Jones, turning from the youngest Summers girl and gesturing in that direction. “Clearly they’ve no sorrow fer the heartless, eh lads?” To which the current crewmates nodded and grinned something devilish.

Ferren looked past the half-man half-monster and found it was true – the Pearl was sailing away having made no move to rescue them. Ferren’s heart sank deeper than the depths of the ocean. They were leaving – why? Did they even realize Jones had captured and pressganged them into his crew? She wanted to call out to them, arms waving frantically in hopes they would see her, but she was too terrified to move, that paralyzing sensation returning again.

“My men will see to it tha’ ya receive the warmest welcome we can offer.” A howl of laughter went up among the captain and his crew, making Ferren more nervous than before. Suddenly the men advanced and began dragging them to different parts of the ship for their initiations.

++++++++++

What looked like abandonment to those on Jones’ ship was but a retreat on behalf of the Pearl. If they hadn’t have separated them from the skirmish, no doubt more of their own would have died.

Rorke had seen the four being hauled on deck through his spyglass with mixed emotions of relief and dread in his heart – Ferren was amongst them – and it was also then that he wished they had truly died instead of been made to suffer such consequences.

He never panicked on the outside but his mind was moving faster than the speed of light now, several images running through his brain; none of which he wanted to think about or discuss, either. His outward expression was stoic as he easily repressed the negative thoughts and turned to several other people on board the Pearl who were not as good as he when it came to concealing their shock and horror. “What do we do now?” he asked, at a loss.

Rorke had a great mind and could solve almost any problem, but right now common sense and rational thought had been thrown out the window and he wanted to leap over the railing and swim over there himself. Ferren had been his closest friend since they were children in Ireland and even though he tended to brush her off, he simply could not abandon her now.

He didn’t know Guin, Angel or Joe that well, but Ferren seemed to like them well enough and that was all he needed.

Angel kicked and screamed as she was dragged off, putting up as much of a fight as her diminutive body could make, even though she knew it was useless. The memory of Davy Jones’ tentacles clasped around her face was so hideous that she couldn’t stop shuddering, sickened to her very core. “Let me go!” she shrieked, her limbs flailing wildly. She knew that resistance was useless, but what else could she do? It seemed impossible that this was her fate, that all of her hopes for the future were now nothing more than dust. She could hear Jones’ men laughing at her as they hauled her along; they felt no pity for her or for anyone, not anymore. How could Angel accept that she would end up like them?

“Angel.” A voice made itself heard through the laughter of the men, somehow reaching Angel despite her hysteria. The voice’s owner, Guinevere, was not far behind, letting herself be frog-marched along the deck with no sign of a struggle. Her calmness in this terrible situation was quite extraordinary, making one wonder where Guin got her cool, steely strength from. “Calm yourself, for your own good. Please, calm yourself.”

Guin looked straight ahead as if gazing directly into the ether, ignoring the sea creatures who roughly gripped her arms, pushing her around as if she was less than a human, less than an animal even. She had to stay calm otherwise she might lose her sanity. She kept her head held high, pressing her lips tightly together to stop herself from crying or yelling. All she could think about was Cairbre, and what he was doing…

~~~
Cairbre was kneeling on the deck as if in a daze, his expression as chilled as that of a dead man’s. He barely heard what Rork said, and he didn’t bother to ask him to repeat himself. Cairbre had not seen Guin, Angel, Joe and Ferren being taken aboard the Dutchman; as far as he knew, they were gone… Guin was gone… There was a cut on his forehead from the battle, blood staining his hair and trickling down his face, mingling with tears. His hands were shaking uncontrollably as he ran it all over in his head once again. He’d arrived too late to save Guin, fighting through the thick of the battle until he reached her, only to see her lifeless body topple over the railings of the ship… her lifeless body…
Drawing in and releasing deep, ragged breaths, Cairbre muffled his sobs, stumbling to his feet, all of his composure gone, replaced by the gait of a drunkard. He moved away from the others, reaching with clumsy hands to his belt to unsheathe one of his twin pistols.
He couldn’t live without her. There was no possibility. He raised the pistol to his head…
“Cairbre!” A tattered cry tore through his ears as one of his fellow crewmates launched themselves at him, toppling him back down to the ground. Eve wrenched the gun out of his grasp, her own face bathed with tears, somehow finding this strength amidst her grief for Angel.
“Give that back!” Cairbre growled. “I mean it!”
“And I mean this! I won’t let you do it! I won’t have us lose another friend!” Eve sobbed, throwing the gun away across the deck. “For the love of God, Cairbre!”
Joe felt a grimy hand slip over his upper arm and lock ahold of his bicep (well it would be a real bicep if he actually worked it out a bit) and start to tug him back away from the rest. How dare that disgusting squid call him a woman! It made his blood boil. It wasn't like he hadn't heard the jab before. Vari (among others) was constantly throwing it at him but he had always managed to shrug it off and call it joking. Now, though, was a different story.
"Hey!" he yelled and tried to make his voice sound deeper and more threatening than it normally was. "Oi!" Angel was screaming across the deck from him and he could see the look of nervous fear on Ferren's face (it was something akin to the look one of those abused Tortuga dogs had given him once right before one of the boys he was with threw a rock at it). Guin's back was to him as she was marched away but he could guess what she must feel like on the inside no matter what face she was putting up on the outside. The monsters holding onto him had a tight grip but the slime on their fingertips was slippery and Joe had always had a knack for getting out of slippery situations. He weaseled his way from between them and dashed across the deck toward the other girls. Surprisingly, he found himself in front of Angel and he stopped.
"Hey, hey," voice softened, he grabbed her face between his two hands and tried to make eye contact as the creature-sailors began dragging him back away, "we'll make it outta this." he was telling himself that more than any of them. He leaned in toward Angel almost as if he wanted to kiss her although he had no clue why he would. Heat of the moment? Panic? Who knew. Either way, it didn't happen, Jones' crew pulled him back away from her.
----
Reece leaned against the side of the Pearl and watched as the ship with mossy, lichen sails began fading away from them. She didn't know the people who had been taken... well, died, actually. But she did recognize the pain of the remaining people on board.
She zoned out from it, she couldn't face it. Not when it was something so similar to emotions she had been through before. She had changed since then, of course. She wasn't the weak and terrified twenty-year-old anymore that she had been when she had lost her fiancé in that hurricane. Still, the memories haunted her and this brought them all back.
Reece looked down to her long tanned fingers that were covered in blood... some of it was even her own. She became conscious of a cut in her forearm and winced as she brushed her left index and middle finger over it. Her stomach flopped, she never did handle the smell or sight of blood well.
Behind her, there were people yelling and it thankfully served as a distraction from the blood.
She turned away from the railing and watched the scene unfold on the deck but she stayed back - it wasn't her place to get involved. She didn't know if she could handle getting involved because she knew the tall man's misery and grief so well and she was also familiar with his desire to take the easy way out and just end it all.
(I don't know if you still wanted to do this or not, Goldy, but I recall we had some awesome Joe and Angel stuff going on and it came to me that it might be fun to explore that again :))
[[Introducing Gideon “Gage” Kingsley, mah vampire charrie into this roleplay <3 ]]
Ferren sat shivering in a tiny room when it was all said and done – they had forced her to say an oath and beat on her when she didn’t cooperate and now she was sporting bruises and welts all over her body. They had also manhandled her in ways that were less than pleasant and it made her body quake even more as the first tears rolled down her cheeks. She pulled her knees up to her chest and cried in that corner for what seemed like an eternity – God knows she’d be aboard this ship for that long anyway.
The oath would bind their souls to the Dutchman itself – just like all the other men here. She wondered if they had all been so cruel to start with, or if time had transformed them into heartless monsters. What if she became like them? It was a horrible thought, but one that wouldn’t stop bothering her. Ferren had never been cruel – not intentionally at least. She wouldn’t harm a person or creature unless there was absolutely no other option.
When she was finally able to, she stood up and quietly made her way into the abandoned corridor dimly lit with lanterns. There were many doors in this hallway, so she crept along and peeked inside of each one, hoping to find Guin, Angel or Joe, maybe even all of them together.
++++++++++
Even from afar, Gage watched Reece and could read her expression with ease. She was undoubtedly upset as most of the other men and women so he made his way over to where the blonde stood alone, keeping her distance from everyone and everything.
Red streams running down her cream colored skin caught his gaze almost immediately. The sight of Reece’s blood was all too tempting, but he had made a promise and could not bear to bring harm to the girl. Besides that, he had been able to feast just the day before when the ship had docked in a portside town and the first drunkard he saw had provided him with enough nourishment for a day or two. He could last a short while without having to feed but he could not prevent the need forever.
Instead, Gage pulled out a handkerchief and wrapped it around the wound in Reece’s forearm so he wouldn’t have to deal with the sight of it. His blue eyes met her own for a moment, reassuring and calm despite the death and destruction that had just transpired moments before.
“You all right?” he breathed in her ear, meaning less the wound, and more about the emotions heavy in the air now. The memories she was no doubt reliving.
He himself could be considered dead. He was already soulless, so Jones could have no hold over him, but that did not mean he couldn’t be killed. Even vampires were not truly immortal. Gage was hardly afraid of the sea-captain, but that did not mean he was just going to rush over there and steal back their friends. That would be downright foolish and no doubt make it all worse.
“What do we do…?” Rorke had asked again, but this time Gage had come up behind him and braced a hand on his shoulder, addressing not only the Irish man but the crew who was panicking and resorting to suicide attempts.
“We have to wait,” he replied aloud. Jack Sparrow had made it clear that he would go nowhere near the ghost ship, and probably with good reason. “I know of damnation and it is not to be taken lightly…”
Rorke shrugged out of Gage’s touch (he hated when others touched him) and spun about angrily. “There’s no telling what could be happening… we need to act!” His voice caught in his throat when he thought of all the terrible things that they might be going through. The torture and pain… they couldn’t sit by and let it happen!
Gage glared at Rorke from beneath the brim of his top hat, fangs extending as he hissed the words out: “We. wait.”
Eve had helped Cairbre to his feet; anxious not to leave him alone, she linked her arm firmly through his, drawing them both nearer the edge of the group so that she could listen to what was going on. Gradually, it became clear that Rorke had realized their lost friends’ real fates: servitude upon the Dutchman. All at once, her stomach sunk in despair and her spirits rose; they were damned to a terrible fate… but they were not gone – not in the sense of being truly dead and passed on. Eve seized upon this news like a starving person might scramble for a crumb of bread; it was in her nature to find hope wherever she could, no matter how small.
Cairbre, too, appeared to have been listening. He glanced at Eve in puzzlement and growing realization, before it fully dawned upon him what had happened. A blazing anger kindled within him; the idea that the hideous creature Jones had enslaved the woman he loved was too much to bear. He wanted to hunt down that despicable squid of a thing and slit his throat, make him pay for ever daring to attack the Pearl… He was vaguely aware of Eve gripping his arm; everything else was blinding anger and despair, and above all, a burning desire to save Guin. He watched Rorke and Gage’s clash, very much on Rorke’s side. He made as if to go forwards, but his balance was still a little off.
“Oh for God’s sake…!” he muttered, reaching up to his forehead, his fingertips coming away slick red with blood.
“Can both of you just stop arguing?” Eve addressed Gage and Rorke sharply, as an angry schoolteacher might confront a pair of naughty schoolboys. “What do you think we can achieve if we turn against each other? We need to work together.” She spoke passionately, her eyes ablaze. There was no way that she was going to let Angel go; she would fight for her every step of the way. But rashness was not the answer, neither was complacency in waiting to see how things turned out. Some kind of middle ground had to be found.
~~~

“Ferren!” Guin leapt up, leaving her place in the corner of the room where she’d been sitting with Angel and Joe. Angel, who had been leaning on Guin for comfort, huddled up in on herself like a snail, folding her skinny arms tightly. Briefly, she glanced at Joe, not exactly sure what to say to him due to his emotional outburst previously. Her cheeks tinged pink, her expression a confused yet yearning frown, and she looked away quickly to watch Ferren and Guin.

Guin enfolded Ferren in a warm hug, knowing that she’d been put through the same experience of swearing in to the crew as the rest of them had. “It’s so good to see you.” She pulled back to read the other woman’s expression. “I thought maybe that…” she trailed off, not wanting to voice her fears. At least now they were all together in the same place. That could be the only comfort. Soon, they would be put to work amongst the crew, and then the real hell would begin.

Joe sat away from the girls in his own disgusting little corner. The floor was damp and soaking right through his dark gray breeches. Thankfully it wasn't overly cold so, besides the mild discomfort that he was going to have to grow accustomed to, it was tolerable. He could sense Angel's eyes on him (or someone's eyes, anyway) but he didn't dare look back in her direction, he couldn't. Not after that stupid scene he almost made up on the top deck. What had he been thinking anyway? Maybe Vari was always right in saying he was a useless idiot.

His shoulders slumped down against the moss-covered wall of their small cell room. Everything reeked of must and for a minute he wished that he hadn't given in, that he hadn't given Jones the oath. It would have been better to be beaten into those slick and smelly top deck boards than to spend forever on this ship. But, deep down, he knew that he didn't have the courage to stand up to anyone. He had always been the sort of person who would run away from pain and fear and that didn't change even now that he was technically dead. Probably Guin, Ferren or even Angel had put up more resistance than he had.

----

Reece kept her eyes lowered and watched as someone (she sort of suspected who) wrapped a cream colored handkerchief around her wound. She tried to sniff away her unwanted tears and put on a good front as she looked up into those blue eyes so like her own. They were exactly what she had expected to see. Her mouth opened but she didn't get the opportunity to reply. So she just swallowed it down and watched him walk away and attempt to handle the situation.

She stood back by the rail of the rocking ship and watched him before she nervously followed, her good hand resting on the handkerchief over her other arm. She let the others handle it but when there was room for her, she came up and rested a comforting hand on Gage's upper arm and tried to pull him away a bit. "Let them handle this. What do we know about all of this anyway?" She wasn't sure about Gage's experience with ships, pirate lore and battles, but she knew hers was very limited and limited mostly to bad experiences at that.

"Come on," she tried to guide him toward the railing again. This wasn't their fight, these weren't their people.

[[PD & Goldy - Feel free to godmod Jones and the rest of his crew if you guys want, to move the storyline along if needed :) ]]

A look of absolute relief flooded over Ferren’s features when she had finally found them. “Thank the heavens that we are at least together.” That happiness was replaced by a wince as Guin captured her in a hug, the woman’s arms brushing against her ribs where a bruise was beginning to form. Jones’ men had no mercy. They did not care what condition these four were in, so long as they could be bent to serve their master.

The fact that they had been left alone was at least something to be thankful for, even if there was no telling how long it would be before someone came along to put them to work. Perhaps if they laid low, no one would notice? It was doubtful, but worth a shot.

A lump rose in the back of her throat as she thought of Rorke on the Pearl with their friends and crewmates. She wondered why they hadn’t come to the rescue – perhaps Jones had been right. No one cared for the heartless beasts they were bound to become now. How long would it be before their skin was replaced with barnacles and all manner of vile sea creatures? She shuddered at the thought.

++++++++++

When Eve piped up, Gage paid her little mind. She meant nothing to him – in fact, he found her quite annoying. As if she knew more than anyone and was the leader. “Why should I listen to you?” he spat. It sufficed to say that Gage felt himself becoming angry, muscles tensing and canine teeth extended into sharp points that he bared towards Rorke and those who would ignore his own advice. They were fools to want to go after their companions with no knowledge of what being undead truly meant. When they were too killed and serving Jones, then Gage could laugh and say he told them so.

When Reece spoke words of rationale, he backed down a bit but the fangs still stayed. “Fine,” Gage gruffed. “Do whatever you wish. Too many people bleeding up here anyway…” He batted away Reece’s hand and stormed off to the lower decks – perhaps there he could keep his wits and emotions in check before he lashed out. He would become increasingly cranky without a good bloodmeal, and now this on top of it.

Whatever, they were beyond his concern anyway, he decided, removing his hat and gloves once he was out of the sunlight – or what could be seen of it through the thick clouds. Reece would probably follow him down here, but even if she didn’t, he could not care. At least she was the last person he could tolerate on this damned ship, but even days like this his patience for her was dwindling. He kicked a bucket out of the way and it went flying through the air before bouncing off the opposite wall. Eventually he parked himself on one of the crates and took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a minute to think.

++++++++++

Rorke made a sweeping gesture once Gage had left, as if to say, ‘and there you have it’. He turned to the others once Gage and Reece were out of earshot and shook his head. “I don’t expect much of anything from him,” he mused, “and as you just saw, I don’t think he’s in any mood to help anyway. So it looks as though we are on our own.” He looked to Eve and Cairbre, knowing that they – three people – would not be able to stand up to Jones and succeed. He chewed on his lower lip and wondered what they might be able to do, but not much was coming to mind.
