Time dragged by painfully slowly. Paige had several blisters, both new and old on her ankle and her shoes were rubbing painfully on them causing her to limp. They'd entered an area with trees everywhere and she was so tired she could barely see the roots sticking up so she tripped frequently, her palms now scraped open. Leah had done the same, and had a deep scratch on her cheek from a stray branch with sharp thorns. Paige knew they both looked pathetic, and the weariness was sitting heavy in the pit of her stomach. Now she was positive she'd made the wrong decision, and telling Shaun to leave had doomed them both.

"I'm sorry, Leah," she eventually said to break the tense silence. She couldn't look at her friend, just stared at her sore feet as they walked, feeling ashamed of herself for both making the wrong decision and also having to apologise. She despised admitting she was wrong.

"It's fine," Leah's voice was finally devoid of her stubborn optomism and although Paige had thought she'd longed for that, she now felt even worse. "I mean, everyone else is dead so what makes us so special that we get to stay alive?"

Paige opened her mouth to answer the question but she really didn't know. She'd lost her best friend, the most amazing boy in the world, her mother who was the most loving woman she'd ever met, her dance teacher who'd inspired her for years. The pain of the loss threatened to overwhelm her and she wondered what would happen if she let it. Would she fall apart completely and run into the arms of the next zombie she found, embracing the death that was sure to come?

For a moment it tempted her so much that her grip of the baseball bat slackened. But then it tightened again when she reminded herself that she wouldn't stay dead. She'd become one of those monsters, forced to walk this cursed Earth until some other survivor smashed her skull in. Paige refused to let that happen and she took a deep breath to steady herself.

"What's special about us is that we've made it this far. We're not going to give up now, okay?" Her voice was firm and when she looked at Leah she smiled at her. The other girl gave a tentative smile back. Paige was about to say something else, but was interrupted by a sound she only vaguely recognised echoing through the trees. Gunshots.

The two of them flinched, looking around with wide eyes. Paige wondered if maybe it was Shaun, but she knew deep down he'd be long gone by now. It was more likely to be some psychopath, and it would be such bitter irony if they managed to survive the zombies only to be killed by another survivor.

"C'mon," she grabbed Leah's arm and the two of them stumbled off, putting as much distance between them and the gunshots as possible.

"I'm Rick," the stranger finally said. "Rick Grimes."

"Lindsey," answered the girl who stepped out from behind Evan suddenly to shake the hand the man was holding out towards them.

With teeth gritted and her arms crossed tightly over her chest Evan opened her mouth too, "I'm Evan."

"Evan?" His left eyebrow arched every so slightly and Evan rolled her eyes.

"Evan Grace, my mum thought I was a boy all the way until I popped out and wasn't so the name was already mine. She kept it and told my dad to suck it." Evan shifted from one foot to the other and ignored the hand he was holding towards her now that Lindsey had pulled hers back.

In a tense moment of awkwardness Rick retrieved the hand and placed them on his hips. "Well, do you want to come with me or not? Those gunshots have probably attracted more of those things. Staying here isn't wise."

Lindsey's eyes darted toward's Evan and they clearly begged for them to go with the stranger but Evan wasn't sure. What if he couldn't be trusted? What the last people had done... it was too much. It couldn't happen again. They couldn't count on getting out of there. At the same time they weren't going to be able to stay alive for much longer without help. They hadn't eaten anything in the past two days and the water they'd drank was only enough to keep them from dehydration. And it would be nice to get out of the gazing sun, the woods filled with bugs and the danger of the open space around them.

"We'll come, but don't think for a moment that I trust you." Evan's voice was sharp, and she bent down to retrieve the axe she'd dropped earlier, gripping it tightly.

"That's fair," he said, shrugging. "The truck's over this way."

He took the lead, the gun now in his hands again, ready to fire if they'd encounter any threats. Evan and Lindsey fell into a quiet pace behind him and Lindsey's hand wrapped around Evan's fingers, squeezing tightly. Evan knew what the girl was trying to say; thank you.

Eventually Paige had to slow down and then stop. The blisters on her feet were weeping blood now and the scratches and cuts on her hands made it impossible to carry the baseball bat. Her bag was heavy on her back and every muscle was screaming in agony. They'd walked so far from where they'd started, with barely any food or water to keep them going and Paige wasn't sure how much longer she could keep going.

The two of them rested under a tree which had large branches drooping over them, sheltering them from the rain which had began to spit down from the grey sky. Shivering, Leah pulled a tin out of her bag and pulled the ring tab to pop it open. It was congealed vegetable soup, cold and possibly out of date but the two were too hungry to care. They took turns passing it back and forth, barely tasting the carrot or onion or whatever else was in there, just glad to have something in their stomach. After they were finished, Paige had the idea to sit them empty can out of their meagre shelter and let it collect the rainwater for them to drink. Moments ago she'd been cursing the rain for making her shiver but now she was grateful for it. It seemed that since the zombies had arrived, her mood swings had gotten even worse.

"We should keep moving," Leah's tone was worried as she looked around the darkened area. "The sound of the rain will make it impossible to hear anybody sneaking up on us. It's not safe here."

Paige knew she was right but her body was so tired and everywhere ached. She could feel weariness creeping up over her and she was about to reply to Leah but her eyelids fluttered and she could barely get out a murmer before she fell asleep.

The green truck that came into view almost had an aura of hope dancing around it. Either that, or a glow of doom. Evan still wasn't sure they could trust Rick, who had struck up a conversation with Lindsey minutes after they began walking. The girl, enthusiastic over having someone new to talk to, had answered all his questions and asked plenty herself. There was a pang of empathy in Evan's heart when he spoke of his wife and son that he'd lost, and she could see his usual calm posterior falter for a moment. He didn't seem like a threat and he seemed genuine when he told them of what he'd gone through and who he'd lost. And it didn't seem he was lying when he confessed that he wanted company only because it was driving him insane to be so alone.

"Feels like I'm the last person in the world," he said sadly, his eyes darkening for a moment.

"That's what I've been feeling too," Lindsey replied, picking up the pace so that she wouldn't fall behind. Evan was happy lingering just behind them, axe still ready to strike into his skull if he made just one wrong move.

"I came across some people a few weeks ago, but they weren't very friendly."

"Same here." Lindsey's step lost some of its bounce and Evan knew why. She remembered it too well.

"You're American, what are you doing here?" Evan asked so suddenly that a shadow of confusion fell over Rick's face when they finally arrived at the vehicle.

"I was on vacation with my family," he replied, motioning for Lindsey to climb into the back. The truck was old and rusty but still looked like it'd run and that was enough.

Lindsey looked at Evan who nodded and then got in, offering Rick a smile when he held the door open for her.

"You want to ride in the front or the back?" he asked, drumming his fingers against the metal gently. The road they'd come to wasn't very big, but it was the first sign of man that the girls had encountered for a while.

"I'm in the back," she replied, joining Lindsey quickly. She glanced around, noting the worn fabric of the seats and the view into the trunk where there was indeed some food, blankets and other supplies gathered. He hadn't lied about that, at least.

Without a word their new companion closed the door behind Evan, walked around the truck and got in the driver's seat.

Paige was woken up by a steady dripping of water on her forehead. She blinked, bleary eyed, wiping at her face. It was darker now and the rain was even heavier, pouring through the branches and leaves, meaning her clothes and hair were sodden. She shivered, sitting up and drawing her knees to her chest, looking around for Leah to ask her why she'd not waken her earlier. But Leah wasn't there.

There was a small patch of flattened grass where she'd been sitting, but no sign of the young, dark haired girl who had been there before Paige had fallen asleep. Her stomach flipped and she pulled herself to her feet, wincing at the pain but ignoring it best she could.

"Leah?" She called out hesitantly, scared of being too loud but also scared of being too quiet. How could she get her friend to hear her without any nearby creatures hearing her too? Her heart started hammering in her chest and she raised her voice as much as she dared. "Leah, where are you?"

Panic started to overwhelm her, and although Paige knew the sensible thing to do would be to wait right there and see if Leah returned or at least wait till it was lighter and she'd be able to see, she ran off in the first direction she picked. Crashing blindly past trees and bushes, she could feel the panic eating away at her. She didn't feel any pain, all she could focus on was finding Leah. No matter how the two of them felt about each other, anything was better than being alone.

"Leah!" She screamed, no longer caring about the noise she made. The thought of being totally alone in this Hell was too much. Paige knew she should calm down but the panic had her in it's grip now and she sprinted through the darkness, screaming for her friend.

In the truck the conversation came in a steady flow between Lindsey and Rick but Evan stayed out of it as much as she could. She was content with watching the scenery change outside the window as well as studying the back of Rick's head or glancing towards his eyes in the rear view mirror. Rain had started pouring only minutes after their journey began and Evan was feeling grateful for her decision to go with the stranger. Together they'd tried to form a plan on where to head, but since none of them felt like there was any point in having anything solid planned out they decided to keep heading North, like Rick had been doing before he encountered the two girls. Details of his life fell from his lips easily because of the animated way Lindsey asked him questions. She seemed to have a neverending thirst for new information about their sudden savior.

Evan tuned most of it out, only tuning in every now and again, her head feeling heavy and her muscles sore. They had been walking for days on end and she'd almost forgotten what it felt like to move forward without putting in the work yourself. The state of her clothes, hair, skin, feet, body, soul, mind all crashed down on her and she stared at her slender hands, clenching and unclenching her fingers. Scrapes and cuts adorned the skin and dirt had clung to it so tightly she wasn't sure she could ever get it off. An overwhelming sense of grief seized her next, because for the first time in days it wasn't her that had to entertain Lindsey, it wasn't her that had to keep her going. She had a moment to pause, to think, to remember. In spite of her best efforts she couldn't keep the tears from building in her eyes but she leaned her head against the window to let a curtain of hair shield her from view. With the rain drumming against the roof she asked herself over and over; "why?"

After just a few minutes, Paige had to stop running. Her chest was tight and burned so much she could barely catch her breath and she had a stitch in her side that was so painful she felt like she might be sick. She bent over, clutcing her knees, her red hair, greasy and stringy hanging around her face as she gasped for air. Her whole body was trembling as she dug her nails into her jeans, cursing herself in her head for being so stupid. The panic had faded now, turning to numbness. She knew she'd messed up, she should have stayed where she was. Leah could be anywhere. She could have gone to the bathroom and been attacked, or maybe she'd just decided to go off alone. Paige could hardly blame her, after all she was the one who kept making the bad decisions. Leah would probably be better off without her.

Shivering violentally now, she kept wandering blindly through the trees, occaisionally a sob breaking through and causing her to hiccup and choke on her tears. Her body felt ready to collapse but Paige knew that if she let herself fall then she'd never get up again.

Sobbing openly now, she broke through the trees, finding herself suddenly standing on a small, narrow country road. The rain was still bucketing down, soaking her to the skin as she stood on the tarmac, unsure of what to do.

Just as she was about to retreat back and find a tree to slump against and let unconciousness take her, Paige heard the faint sound of an engine in the distance. Turning to her left she saw a faint light in the distance, fast approaching her. Sighing, she slumped on the side of the road, not caring who they were or if they would help or harm her.

After some time of driving silence engulfed the trio, all conversations coming to a halt. Lindsey tucked her head against the window on her side and closed her eyes, clearly looking to catch some sleep while they were semi-safe. Evan smiled at her and then met Rick's eyes in the rear-view mirror. He motioned for her to join him in the front seat and she hesitated for a moment, but then unbuckled the seatbealt confining her and climbed into the front. When she was safely strapped in again she turned towards him, studying his features closely.

"How did you make it all this time?" she asked, brushing a few stray hairs out of her face.

He shrugged. "Same way you did, I guess."

"So, luck, then?"

A smile spread across his features. "Something like that."

There was a pause.

"I'm sorry about your family," Evan said honestly, turning back momentarily to make sure Lindsey was still safe; the girl was her only family now.

"Thank you." His hands gripped the wheel a little tighter for a second but then they relaxed again. "You haven't told me much about you..."

"I know," she assured him. "There's not much to tell. Not really. I was just a normal person before all this. I didn't stand out much."

"Where are you from?"

She bit her bottom lip. "London. You?"

"Georgia."

"Do you think what's happening here is happening there too?" Evan shifted in her seat, ignoring the humming of the rain, concentrating only on her male companion.

"It must. Otherwise the army - or someone - would have come to help by now. There's no way they wouldn't know that this is happening."

More silence. Evan's heart was beating in a steady rhythm for the first time in weeks.

"You're probably right." She sighed. "Unless they figure there's nothing they can do and that it'd be better just to leave us here to die. To keep the... things... contained."

He seemed to consider her words but then shook his head, never taking his eyes off the damp road. "No, they wouldn't do that. Maybe with a smaller country, a smaller island, but not Britain."

Whatever answer she had for him drowned in the schreeching of the tires as Rick turned the wheels sharply to the left; Evan banged her head on the side of the window and dark spots started dancing before her eyes as Lindsey woke up screaming and Rick started cursing. Someone was sitting by the side of the road. Someone not dead. Or undead.

Paige watched the vehicle approach, feeling numb about the whole thing. Part of her was still swaying towards the idea of ending her miserable existance, and she longed to just stretch out in the road and let the car run her over. She imagined the wheels crunching over her, snapping her ribs and crushing her lungs. Imagining the feeling of her last breath slipping away. If these were real people they'd make sure she couldn't come back as a zombie, surely? But despite the temptation she didn't move, that survival instinct still tucked away somewhere deep inside her. Paige wondered vaugely when she would snap completely and the instinct would leave her completely. Part of her hoped it would be soon.

For a moment it seemed like the car hadn't seen her and she wondered if it would drive by and just leave her here to die. She should probably have gotten to her feet and flag them down but just as Paige was contemplating dragging herself to her feet the driver slammed on the brakes and screeched to a halt in front of her, spinning sideways so she could see in the windows.

A female about her age, with straggly hair was looking out at her and Paige stared back. It felt like years had passed since she'd seen other humans. Beyond the other female she saw what looked like a kid, but she shook her head at such a ridiculous thought. How could a child survive in such a hellish world?

Turning her gaze to the driver she assessed him as he did the same to her, safe inside the truck while she was sitting in the rain. He looked older than Paige and the two females in the backseat and his face looked totally shut off as he looked her up and down, obviously seeing in the state she was in she was far from a threat.

Paige lowered her gaze, waiting for him to either drive away or maybe just kill her right here.

Evan's heart had crept up her throat and she wasn't sure if she was breathing or not. Everything seemed to have frozen around them the same second the car came to a halt and she met the eyes of the woman at the road. They told the same story that Evan knew hers did; the story of pain, fear and suffering. Although there was a pang of sympathy soaring through her she wanted nothing more than to scream at Rick to keep going. She did nothing, she could do nothing. Lindsey had fallen silent beside her and Rick seemed to be as unable as they were to move.

"Are you alright?" he asked finally, in a low voice. Evan and Lindsey only nodded. "I'll go see if she's okay," he said hesitantly, as if the sentence was a question rather than a statement.

"Don't," Evan cut him off before he had a chance to move. "We don't know her. This could be a trap."

A million years seemed to pass although it was only seconds in reality.

"No, I'll go." Rick reached for his gun and opened the door slowly, stepping outside.

The first thing Paige noticed when the man stepped out the car was that he looked hesitant and almost scared, as if he was stepping towards a rabid dog. The second thing she notice was the gun in his hand. Her heart seemed to skip a beat and her chest tightened, making it impossible to breath. She wished Leah was here. If she hadn't have gone, Paige wouldn't be in this mess. But now she was totally alone and the one person left alive in this world that she trusted was gone.

She didn't look the man in the eyes as he approached, just kept her gaze focused on the gun that he carried. She wondered if he knew how to use it, if he'd stolen it, how many people he'd shot with it. After a moment, Paige realized she honestly didn't care.

"If you're going to kill me, just do it quickly," she muttered, her voice hoarse after screaming for Leah back in the forest.

"I'm hoping it won't come to that," Rick said slowly. He had stopped just after leaving the truck behind and Evan went against her better judgement rolling the window down, to hear. To see. To know. "What are you doing here?"

Evan saw the wind tousle his hair and she glanced back at Lindsey, offering the girl a hesitant smile, trying to tell her that it'd be okay. He was armed and she didn't seem to be. It would be okay.

Paige relaxed once he had spoken and raised her line of view so she was making eye contact with her. He looked sincere enough, but then again he did have a gun and no matter how sincere he looked he could easily shoot her. Not much she could do about it, so she decided to settle on attempting to be civil.

"My friend... She dissapeared. I tried to find her but I just ended up getting lost, like the idiot I am. I couldn't go any further. I wasn't really expecting to find anybody driving around any more though..."

Paige glanced back at the truck, notcing the rear window had been rolled out and she could see the other two females clearer now. Shockingly, the smaller one was indeed a young girl. Paige felt a wave of pity for her wondering how she'd managed to cope through all this.

"There aren't that many people driving around, you're right about that." Rick hesitated for a moment and then he glanced back at Evan. Their gaze met and it was as if he was asking for her permission. Although every fiber in her body told her to stay in the safety of the car - or even drive away, leaving both of them out there - she stepped out.

"Lock the doors," she instructed Lindsey when her feet hit the pavement. Without waiting for a reply she joined Rick, standing by his side, as if she'd been there a million times before. Pity was still clawing at her, trying to win over her sense of self-preservation.

Rick's gun was still pointing sharply at the stranger, never faltering. Again his eyes were asking Evan for permission, and this time it almost annoyed her. He didn't owe her anything, he could make whatever decisions he wanted, and yet he didn't. And yet he waited.

"When did you last see your friend?" she asked at last, allowing the empathy to win the battle inside of her.

Paige kept an eye on the older girl as she stepped out, watching carefully the interaction between her and the guy with the gun. A series of emotions seemed to cross the woman's face before she turned to Paige and questioned her. She was taken aback, she'd expected an order for a bullet through her skull, not sympathy. For a moment she hesitated, then decided she had nothing to lose.

"I don't know how long ago. We'd been walking for so long and when we stopped, I fell asleep. When I woke up, she was gone. Her bag too," she paused to bite on her lip, knowing it sounded like she'd been totally ditched. "I... I don't know where she's gone or what happened to her. There was only the two of us..."

Paige trailed off, bowing her head and hoping she could hide the pain on her face behind her hair. She hated herself for being so weak, but she was too emotionally and physically exhausted to keep up any pretence of strength any more. Taking a deep breath, she continued.

"I know it's unlikely, but if there's any chance you've seen another girl walking around... Just point me in that direction and I'll be out of your way."

Evan shifted her weight from one foot too another. "No. We haven't seen anyone."

There weren't that many options to choose from, although there was still a silent struggle within Evan of what they should do. Rick's gun was lowered, slowly, slowly, until it pointed only at pavement. His eyes told her everything he was thinking; he wanted them to help her. Why, Evan didn't know, but it was painfully obviously written on his features.

She sighed. "We shouldn't stay still for long, not out in the open like this. Do you have any idea in what direction she could have gone?"
