Plus he can help us, being a skilled archer and so on. Since Boromir will join our party, until it is safe for him to reveal himself without ruining Faramir's story. Anyone can control Haldir, as they see fit.

As far as the purpose of his death goes, from what I've read about the character Peter Jackson killed him off, to make the sacrifice of the elves much more symbolic. For instance, many elves went to Helm's Deep, and Legolas was the lone surviving elf. Of course that failed, because it came across as throwing away a character, only because he has a small handful of scenes.

I thought the whole thing was wierd, because from what I read the Elves don't even go to Helms Deep in the book. Peter Jackson supposedly added them to make it more believable that they could've held out long enough for the Riders of Rohan to arrive and turn the tide of battle.

I just had an idea, that should be discussed. Since we are saving Haldir, how about the one that actually saves his life is Talathiel?

Okay, so this is how I see it. During her younger more adventurous days, she could have gone travelling with him--it does say in the information that he had travelled and learned to speak the western languages-- and struck up a bit of a friendship with him.

By saving the life of her friend, it could help her find peace with Rohan. Because she always carried the sadness that she couldn't save her husband from death, saving the life of a friend on a Rohan owned fort could bring some kind of closure for her.

Name: Finras Findarussa

Age: Um... *calculates* 6,575 years old

Appearance: Red hair, dark eyes, slightly olive complexion, but a Noldorin look about him, about two and a half rangar tall (7.5'), generally wears green and brown.

History: Finras and his twin sister, Arestel, were born a few months after Nirnaeth Arnoediad, to Maedhros and his wife Meril. Meril, after a fight with her husband over his deeds, takes Finras and Arestel and leaves Himring. En route to Doriath, Meril's original homeland, they are attacked by orcs, and Meril is killed while the twins, at this time around ten in human years, were taken captive and carried off.
Finras and Arestel escape, but winter falls, and, alone in the wild, Arestel dies. Finras is heartbroken, but continues northwards, seeking his former home.
By chance, he strays close to Echoriath and is captured by Maeglin, accused of being a spy for Morgoth because of his Avarin look, and brought before Turgon in Gondolin.
Turgon, on the other hand, instantly sees Feanor in Finras, and orders him to be kept under guard. Later, Finras proves himself to be loyal to his second cousin and king, and Turgon gives him a position in the army. He is deeply loyal to Turgon, and stands beside him in the sack of Gondolin until his death, when Turgon bids him flee with the rest of the people. Finras obeys, and goes with Tuor and Idril to Sirion, where, later, he encounters his father and remaining uncles in the final kinslaying, coming face to face against them in the fight. Though much time has passed, Finras recognizes Maedhros and Maglor and is torn between the father he hardly knew and Earendil's people, who had become his own.
In the end, he fights on the side of the former Gondolindrim. He is spared, for Maedhros forbids any to touch his son to harm him, and, albeit a bit reluctantly, returns to Himring, though mainly to be with the last descendants of his beloved cousin; Elrond and Elros. By the beginning of the War of Wrath, Finras has been reconciled with his father, and harbors little bitterness against him.
He fights in the War of Wrath, being untainted by his family's Oath and still loyal to Turgon and by proxy Earendil.
In the Third Age, he dwells in Imladris, but also takes up occupation as a ranger at times.

Personality: Finras is thoughtful and valiant, more like unto the House of Fingolfin than that of Feanor, which makes sense, but he does have a certain amount of fire in him, especially in battle. He has no desire to leave Middle Earth, not of selfish reasons, but because he loves the land and people. He's generally good-natured, but stubborn as anything, and will refuse to do anything he thinks is not right.
