In terms of relationships...do you think Aragorn and Arwen really were suited?

I personally believe that Eowyn would have been so much more suitable but i'm glad that Aragorn chose to remain with Arwen, faithfully.

What point do you believe Tolkien was trying to make in the way in which he created a perfect female compatibilty for Aragorn, in the form of Eowyn, and yet had him choose the girl with a lower compatible status if you catch my drift?

He was creating a third tie-in between the Edain and the Eldar--the third and last. There were two other cases of a Mortal and an Immortal falling in love: Luthien (elf) and Beren (human), and Tuor (human) and Idril (elf). Therefore, it would not make sense to have Aragorn wed Eowyn--the point is to have a final elf&human bond, and Eowyn was not an elf.

Also, the main difference between elves and humans is that elves look fairer, and are immortal. I don't believe there are any big anatomical differences.

Another point: Aragorn knew Arwen way before he knew Eowyn, and they both were in love with each other. Eowyn was never really in love with him, just with the thought of the power that 'surrounded' him. She might have thought she loved him, but it wasn't the real him.

Aragorn, so far as I know, didn't love Eowyn at all, at least not in that sense.

No i understand he didn't love her and that is why he states 'It ois but a shadow that you love, i Cannot gove you what you seek'.

I'm just curioius as to the views in this case.

was it you who hasn't finished the book, Frodos-Guide?

In the book, you get the sense that Aragorn cares very much about Eowyn. I think he loves her, although platonically. He never feels the same way about her the way he feels about Arwen.

I believe Faramir says something along those lines [the quote you wrote--look! That rhymed! anyways...] when he and Eowyn fall in love. And besides, Eowyn and Faramir belong together and Arwen and Aragorn belong together--IMO [and probably in Tolkien's =D]

Originally Tolkien intended for Aragorn to marry Eowyn (so I've heard). But I do think that Arwen does suit Aragorn; I mean, they grew up together. Aragorn did a great job of being faithful, too. I don't think he ever should have (whether intentionally or not) led Eowyn to think he loved her.

Just a point there Nightingale, Aragorn and arwen did not grow up together. They met when he was 20 (I think) and that was the cause of him leaving, and going into the wild. To prove himself worthy to Elrond so that he would agree to Arwen marrying him.

I believe Arwen was his perfect match. Her grace and beauty brought her to a level with his valour, honour and majesty, and vice versa.

Eowyn may have loved Aragorn, I don't see why so many disagree with that possiblity, but i do not think Aragorn ever loved her. Not in the fashion he loved Arwen anyway.

[And I don't know where you heard that Tolkien originally intended Eowyn to marry Aragorn. If you can remember, could you point me in the right direction, because I should like to know the source? :P]

I believe that Arwen was best for Aragorn because Arwen got there first and even though it was very sad in the movie the way he told Eowyn no...but yeah..Arwen and Aragorn. Even though I don't particuarly like Arwen but I thnk she is best suited for him. If you know what I mean.

Quote:
[Eowyn is speaking]'...I would not see a thing that is high and excellent cast away needlessly.'
'Nor would I,' he said. 'Therefore I say to you, lady, stay!...'
...
Then he kissed her hand, and sprang into the saddle, and rode away, and did not look back; and only those who knew him will and were near to him saw the pain that he bore.

--Tolkien, J R R; The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

'He' is Aragorn; 'she' Eowyn. I think he does love her, just not romantically.

Hmmm... yeah, I never thought about that! I mean, yeah, I love a lot of people not romantically. Just as friends. *nods* I do like that.

Thank you for correcting me!

I think I read it on a very book-oriented Eowyn site... I don't know if I still have the link, let me see... Here's the link to that part of the site. It's in the first paragraph, I believe. http://otherworldfantasies.com/eowyn/eowynand.html

In Poland is book called "Teutonic Knights" wrote by H. Sienkiewicz. In this book is the same thread about one man and two women. That man took an oath of allegiance one of these women. Someday he met second woman and fell for she, but he loved first woman like Aragorn loved Arwen. I think Aragorn would be luckier with Eowyn, but Arwen was fated to him.

Wow, Nightengale, some of those passages were exactly the ones I used...interesting...

Eärlindë, I don't understand what you mean by "luckier with Eowyn".

Yeah, but I think you have to look at what's good for Eowyn also. I think she was much happier with Faramir than if she was Queen of Gondor...and such-like.

I agree. I think that eventhough Arwen comes off as a sort of weak woman to some people, she was a perfect match for Aragorn, perhaps to balance his...manly qualities...;)

What??? Who says Arwen's weak? *goes off on witch-hunt*--jk

Of course she's not weak. I'm not just talking about her with a sword in the movies, either. I think it takes someone very strong to say good-bye to her father for eternity and make a choice to be there when the man she love dies. It takes someone with mad strength to die when one is never meant to.

That's why I said sort of. It's because many percieve her as such in comparison to Eowyn. I know I probably wouldn't be strong enough to give up going to the prettiest, best land in the world for one mortal man. But I was just trying to show the balance thing.
