True good point. Perhaps I just got used to seeing Aragorn and Eowyn together in the movie :S hehe

I wouldn't call it fame as such. Originally what she wanted was an escape from the life she was already leading. Aragorn became that escape, he was wise and well experinced in the world. He could have taken her away from the burdens of her home. In that sense he became her hero, she became infatuated with him so much, that perhaps it did become true love, everything more than escape.
However Aragorn refused to take her away with him: into battle or the paths of the dead. He held her to her duties as shieldmaiden of Rohan. She took this to mean he seen her as nothing more than house-maid; she wasn't good enough. So she decided to prove to him and everyone else how good she was. Also to prove to herself, what she was capable of.

True, but you can see the similiarities between Aragorn and Eowyn, that would make people think they may have made a better couple. He was running from his duties like Eowyn was running from hers.

However you are right, Eowyn is happier with Faramir :D

True...I dunno on screen they seemed to click more but of course that wasn't exactly what Tolkien wanted hehe. :P

They are both happy with their spouses though, so basically everyone wins whether they want to or not :P

Yeah, he was so cute when he chose Eowyn over his own home. The ladies of Gondor were not enough for him.

Wow :bounce:... Quite the discussion you've had going here. I wouldn't exactly say that Eowyn was running from her duties as Shieldmaiden. I think she wanted it to mean something more than it did. I wouldn't say Aragorn was running, either. He made it clear that he didn't want what people one day expected him to be.

Eowyn wanted to be more than what she was. She wanted to prove herself and be different I guess. Aragorn's path was laid before his feet from birth, but he turned from that path and became a ranger.

I think Eoywn wanted to be more than what people expected of her. Everyone wanted her to stay home, get married, have children, not interfere with "men's" work.

I agree with you. It's also an empowering feeeling.

Yeah shes sort of like the feminist role model. I love her character, she is possibly my favourite character.

I agree. Eowyn is an oustanding role model for feminists everywhere.

Eowyn, to me, represents the person who everyone expects to do one thing : be a woman. She's not expected, or wanted, to fight. Eowyn is supposed to be obedient, do what she's told. Eowyn is the polar opposite of that.

I agree she is expected to support her superiors, the men. Uphold the household, while the men are gone. She is to lead the people, while the men are away, but is not expected to do any fighting.
To a certain level she resents this, she feels like she is being suppressed. She seeks to show her abilities.

Exactly! That's precisely what I'm trying to say.

Hehe we have an understanding. So even though Eowyn is an amazing character, Arwen is still better suited for one another, they have sacrificed so much to be together and that in a sense is love in its purist form.

I think Arwen and Aragorn are best suited for one another... can't think of any reasoning to that, admittedly, but... yes.
Someone must have mentioned it somewhere in this thread already, but Tolkien originally intended for Aragorn to marry Eowyn and not Arwen... what a different outcome that would have been :erm:
