Post subject:  Some People Hate Hobbits

There appears to be lots of people with a dislike towards Hobbits i wonder why this is? Does anyone know. I understand that there are some undesirbale traits of Hobbits but that's no reason to have such a strong dislike of them i don't think...I love Hobbits...what about you?

Aye, I love hobbits. Not that I'd choose to be a hobbit if given the choice of any race in Middle-Earth, but I'd definately love to live that peaceful sort of life.

silfa, the URL for your second banner is making the entire page bigger, just so you know.

I don't particularly like Hobbits. At least not the average Hobbit--mostly because they take the peace and comfort of the Shire for granted, having forgotten that the labours of others keep evil from it.

Well i love hobbits and i do not see why a few hobbits taking The Shire for granted should cause so much hostility against them!

It's not just a few hobbits, it's most of them. The only exceptions are those who travel around, such as Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Therefore, I do not like the vast majority of hobbits.

Hobbits rock... LOTR wouldn't be LOTR without them... duh...

No. It would. The only important hobbits are Frodo, Bilbo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Without them, LotR wouldn't be LotR. Without all other Hobbits, though, it'd still be fine.

Well, LOTR wouldn't be LOTR without the Hobbits, that's true. That doesn't mean however that I like them very much. I don't really dislike them, though I find them a little bit boring. Elves for instance are a lot more interesting and therefore my favourites.
I think that Hobbits are needed, because they show us we have to be happy at some times, even when there is little reason for happiness. They are important, but to me, not very interesting.

Yeah... people ask me which species I would like to be if i lived in Middle-earth, and I always say a hobbit... but then they get really grossed out!!! They think that short people are weird, and hairy feet are just unhygenic... I try to tell them all hobbits comb their feet, but for some strange reason no one will listen. :confuzzled:

How very sad.

Hobbits are very unique. Tolkien took time and created a very comfortable folk that was unlike any. He took the time to develop their personalities and habits, looks, and appetites for food. Saying the word "hobbit" makes me smile because they are good-natured, and many other things. Lord of the Rings certainly would not be Lord of the Rings without them. If Tolkien never would have created hobbits, Lord of the Rings would be like any other fantasy book with the well-known races of Man, Elf, and Dwarf.

Except that it was practically the first (if not the first) to use Elves of that style. Before, most were short fairy-like creatures, commonly associated with Brownies, and not always good.

In the film Galadriel says to Frodo that "even the smallest person can change the course of the future". I think that is one of the most important teaching that Tolkien gave us with is work. So Hobbits are an essential component of The Lord of the Rings. Even if I'm always been attracted by Elven I think that Hobbits are awesome because they mean something that in our world have almost disappeared, something like humility and semplicty. I'm not sure I'm expressing well my thought, but it's just difficult express it in italian! I mean that they can live in peace and be happy without need power. This is , according to me, the reason why Frodo had been able to resist keeping the Ring to himself.
