How does your impression of ringwraiths/black riders change over the course of the book? How eerie or evil do they come across to you? How much power do you think they have? What do you like or dislike about them? Etc. Etc Etc |

In the fellowship they come across more evil/scary to me. Certainly when I was growing up being read the books and listening to the old radio show. But then you aren't aware so much about their actual power until later in the books. I think the suggestion and the not knowing much about their power, and overall them coming across as creepy wraiths of great power hunting constantly for one thing alone that makes them come off as very evil. In say difference to the orcs who squabble and kill pretty much anything. |

...I think the Ringwraiths are definitely much more "present" and scary in the books than the movies. That's not to say they didn't terrify me in FotR, but by TTT you kind of lose a sense of their fearsome presence. They don't seem as active a threat anymore, while in the books you can't really forget about them. Does anyone else have the same opinion? |

^Yes, I have the same feeling of them being more present in the books. Like Elessar said, they were terrifying in FotR because we know so little about them and the Hobbits' reactions to them enhance the creepy feeling. But every time the Fellowship feels the presence of the Ringwraiths in the books it's pretty scary because you don't know where they are and what they will do. And above all, because a lot of their scary powers is what they have over the mind.. I know, they made me all paranoid! ![]() In the movies I don't think they were scary at all. They were just another enemy.. no, well.. actually, they were pretty scary in FotR.. now I think about it. ![]() |

Yes, that's exactly what I think. It's like they disappear and are no longer as much a threat. Considering how well they traced Frodo and the fellowship in FotR, it seems as if they lost their tracking skills in parts of TTT and most of RotK! |

Well, something I like is how they each have something they're known by for example, Kamul the Easterling, the Witch King, the Undying, The Dark Marshal, the Tainted. That's something I find pretty interesting. |

I think it's said in the book (by an orc or something...) that Sauron won't let the Ringwraiths "cross the river" on their new steeds. So basically he's keeping them secret to a certain extent and so can't have them flying around everywhere. |

ah I see. I didn't remember that in the books, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't mentioned in the movies. I guess they just didn't seem as dangerous a threat in the last two movies. |

In first part, during the first chapters, they were most feared because hobbits were alone and there was no Gandalf or Aragorn to guide them. I had feeling that their breaths are on my neck. When Aragorn appeared, it seemed like they stopped being as dangerous. |

perhaps because they knew who Aragorn was and feared him. ![]() |

Apparently there is no such thing as a truly black horse, so it would have been literally impossible for them to have black horses for the movie. Fun fact. ![]() If you're Sauron, however, and you're capable of forging an all-powerful ring... different rules apply for horse breeding. ![]() |

To me they seem really scary, especially the scream that they make (which the movie got perfectly - exactly how I imagined it!) and how whoever hears it is basically drowned in terror and struck dumb. When I was reading about the hobbits reactions to the ringwraiths, how they crouched in fear and held their hands to their ears, I felt so bad for them. They're altogether just fascinating creatures (er...men?). I especially like the witch-king, even though he stabbed Frodo ![]() |
