He was some other being, older than trees. I think he was created in the beginnings of Middle-Earth to guide nature.

I think Goldberry is water spirit of sorts.

I think he's some sort of hobbit and elf or fairy, but that's my opinion. I'm sad that they aren't in the movie. :'-(

Yeah, I can see Goldberry being some sort of water spirit or something of the like, but Tom is still a mystery to me. Maybe he's a combination of different races or something, lol.

Kinda. There are 16 poems in the book, which two are about Tom so we won't know much about him.

I am quite sure. Elves are much different than she is. And she was described as Daughter of the River, so...

I agree, I dont think she was an elf, if she was it would have been mentioned. although she seems to be very elegant, and in tune with the natural world around her like the elves, so the first time i read it i thought she was an elf too.

I'm sure Goldberry wasn't an elf, but it's hard to tell what Goldberry and Tom were. I allways imagined Goldberry like a shining girl- sort of like a fairy- and she's a bit wet all the time, but not disgustingly, beautifully, and her dress is like a river.

She is back to the river for some time, that was mentioned as well.

True, thats got me leanin towards her being some sort of water spirit, something mystical and beautiful. I wish they could have fit in Tom and Goldberry into the movie, I would have liked to of seen them. Tom's such a cheerful fellow, it would have put a bit of a bright spot in the hobbits flight from the Shire. His songs are amusing!
