Well I can tell you that I hate reading & was a "movie first" person, but after watching all three movies a few times I had to have more Middle-Earth so I bought the trilogy plus The Hobbit in a box set and those first about 50 pages bored me to tears and I am just being honest, but when I got to the part where Gandalf starts explaining to Frodo about the ring and about Gollum and how he acquired the ring ect. it was smooth sailing for me after that and I have read the books all the way through 3 times now and have went back and referenced them hundreds of times and now I have ended up reading the Silmarillion, & The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth.

After I read the first time I thought Peter Jackson really missed the boat by not having Glorfindel in the movie and letting Arwen take his part but after a while I learned to separate the movies from the books because they're just two different things in my opinion and I totally understand why Jackson left Glorfindel out because it would have taken so much time to introduce this character to spend the time that would have had to been spent to introduce when it was much easier to bring Arwen in...... so that's what I always try to tell my friends that want to argue about the books & the movies they gotta learn to separate them and I think you enjoy them more that way or at least I do because the movies are only based on the books and I think Peter Jackson done a splendid job. Enjoy reading those books.
And make sure you read the appendices at the end, my favorite part is the appendix about Aragorn and Arwen it's just such a heartfelt story I can't explain it but the appendices are a must-read for any fan.
