Post subject: Fatty Bolger, "The Brave"
PostPosted: August 29th, 2005, 3:26 pm

I have named him Bolger the Brave of my own accord, by the way, due to his part in the book.

I have posted in this forum because I fear more have seen the film than have read the book and would have no idea who Fatty was after all.

I feel that Fatty Bolger should have been portrayed in the movie for he was one of the first brave souls to stand in Frodo's stead. What do you think?

I have to agree that he was one of the first to stand in Frodo's stead but he has such a small part in the book. The film makers probably wanted to cut to the chase when introducing all the main characters. In the end though I think it would have been nice if they had put him in the movie anyway.

Agreed. Dear Fredegar always makes me think of the house Frodo acquired at Crickhollow, and of course, that part was completely left out of the movie, as well *sigh*.

It is said in the book he had no desire to depart his home [he seemed to lack the adventurous nature of Pip and Merry] and thus indeed remained behind to [for the lack of better phraseology] tie up the loose ends and wait for Gandalf. After all, a hobbit's heart truly lies in peace... and quiet :-D.

Yet peace and quiet is quite different to what Fatty really got. I really felt sorry for him when the black riders came calling at Crickhollow but he lived to tell the tale, so all is swell!

Well, he had a very miniscule "cameo". At Bilbo's party (in the Extended Edition, anyway) there is a less-than-two-second shot of Bilbo laughing and saying "Fatty Bolger!" while he's greeting other hobbits. I can't remember what he looks like, though...

Fatty Bolger is cool.

Though I said that name to my brothers, and for a couple of days EVERYONE was Fatty Bolger...

I like Fredegar. I dunno why, but ... He could be my dream hero. Unwilling, not a brave prince on a white horse ... He lacks perfection and that's what I like.
But he's also brave. To see all those Nazgul riding there ... :hide:

Hello :) , I agree with everyone. Although I did not catch the Fatty Bolger cameo in the first film  . Fatty Bolger in the book does seem content to live the quiet life even though perilous times approached. Moreover, as everyone has wonderfully stated :) ,I admire him for being courageous when the black riders ( Nazgul) came riding through Crickhollow. He was indeed a good friend to Frodo. :-D

:P, I think that if Fredegar deserves the title "The Brave", then a lot of other characthers from the Lord of the Rings do too. :)

I agree, though.

Yes, I like Fatty Bolger, too. :) I'm not especially attached to him, but he is part of LotR, after all, and the Shire. I always chuckle for a bit at the part where he falls shaking at a neighbors doorstep :D , but then I feel a pang of pity for him. He was brave. Good old Fatty! :D

Frodo was going to be called Bingo-Boulger Baggins but Tolkien decided to change it when the story ebcame more serious. So that's the origin of Fatty Boulger's name........

I really love all the small roles in the book that dont apear in the films. I watched the films and then read the books i loved all those intresting little people like good old fatty, Tom of the oldforrest and dont forget good old farmer magot, hes so nice but in the film hes portraid, sortly, as an angry old farmer. i totally understand why they cut and changed what they did in the film but its still a shame. it would have been great to have 6 films for each of the original books but it would be too expensive.

but yeah i love those seemingly ''unimportant'' people.

I truly agree. Fatty Bolger should have been in the movies as should have been so many others. The answer i alway get from film fanatics is that they had to be left out because otherwise the move would be 80 hours long. Secondly they say that the credibility would be lost...
If all the invented parts would have been left out, if all the slow boring parts would have been left out and the story would have been told aright i suspect the movie to be exactly as long as he is now.
Plus i find leaving out Fatty (or Tom Bombadil) does not make you loose credibility.. but Frodo crossing the river at Osgiliath coming all the way from the crossroads and then return back in a day time... these are the things that make the movies loose any credibility.

I also like Fatty and I think it is very pity that he didn't show up in the movie.. he is a good example of an ordinary Hobbit, who eats a lot and doesn't think much about the other things beyond the borders of the Shire.. And than, by accident, he gets strangled up in a story of his friends and he has to be brave... he is a really good and brave Hobbit!!

Unfortunately, Fatty is amongst the group of characters who have been cut off the story so the screenplay could meet the limitations imposed by time and budget :annoyed:

Don't get me wrong, I do acknowledge the magnitude of such a "gigantesque" task that bringing the book to screenplay must have been. But really, there was few other characters who had a crucial role in the overall story such as the Prince of Dol-Amroth! Really, whatever happen to the Prince? as well as Aragorn's people and Elrond's twin sons!!! Why are they not there? Lack of time, budget, or other.... It was an ambitious project and it has been accomplished as best as it could be, given the restrictions encountered so I cannot be too harsh.

I shall agree with you guys, Fatty has a very significant role. He does deserve to be acknowledge for his bravery at least!

Perhaps we need a TV series adaptation to give more time to the director... Why not? 6 episode of one hour each over three consecutive years... Anyone for that?

Fleur :bye2:

I agree that a lot of important characters were left out of the movies - Fatty, Tom Bombadil, The Prince of Dol Amroth, Glorfindel, Goldberry, so many others, BUT I do think that, given the timer and budget allowed to him, P.J did a BRILLIANT job. I mean, imagine if it had been another movie like the animated one? *shudders* He did do a great job, and I think we need to console ourselves with having all those wonderful characters in our minds and our imaginations only, and not on the screen. Personally, I like havig some things left to my imagination. I mean, we didn't like the changes made to Faramir, what if Faty wasn;t what we expected?
