Do you think it was hard to read FOTR the first time?

I didn't have trouble reading it--I got really into it the first time I read it. ^_^ What lost me was the long introduction thing that I felt obliged to read first...

I could see it being more difficult if English is not your native language.
For me, I read through the six books the first time rather steadily over a couple months. Being I was borrowing the paperbacks from a friend, I caught up to him by the time I was ready to read Return of the King. He had slowed down in his reading, so I got the an old 1950's vintage hardback from the library and finished it. Wanting more, I combed through the prologue and the appendices and absorbed all the lore and history and started to learn the Tengwar, Calenders, etc. Couldn't get enough!

just the beggining was a little boring the first time but I don't think it was hard but you are forgivable since english is not your first language :cool:

I remember it took me a little while to read them. I finished them all within a year, but FotR did take me the most time considering I was not yet familiar with all the characters save Gandalf and Bilbo (I was very sad when he left). But, once I got to know all the new characters I loved it and finished it relatively quickly.

First I read FOTR in my own tongue, which is finnish. SO when I first read it english, I had pretty good idea what was going on, so I understood it.

No, I never found it hard to read the first time. Quite the opposite actually. I read it back in the '90s when I was in my teens. I even enjoyed the Council of Elrond chapter (and never understood why so many people found it daunting or boring).

The first time I tried read LOTR was after the movies came out. I was probably in 5th or 6th grade, and I didn't get past A Shortcut to Mushrooms. Then, maybe a year or so later, I picked it back up. It was still a little difficult just because of the way it was written, but not too bad. The Council of Elrond was also the hardest part for me, just because it went on and on...The beginning also seemed slow to me when I read it the first two times.
I just finished reading FOTR again and this time I went whizzed through it and couldn't put it down! The COE was still the hardest part, but I enjoyed it much better than I had before. And I loved the beginning.

I also read the books after I saw the movie. I never really intended watching the movie (oh if mum hadn't asked me to do the ironing that day, I never would have discovered LotR!) and I've always been irritated by people who watch movies without reading the book. So it was more a case of stubbornness than actually liking the books. Actually I got quite bored at first. I love them now though, they're my favourite!

I was about 14 when I first read The fellowship. I didn't have any problems with it, and since then have been a Tolkien fan.

Certainly not! I was, let's see, 8 or 9. But then I've always been a good reader. It probably took me a week and enthralled me right away...

I was a young tween when I read FotR for the first time by myself (when I was even younger my mom read it outloud to me and my brother) and I had already seen the movie (but RotK hadn't come out yet) and I had a bit of trouble on Book One just because it seemed to drag on and on to me but after the Council of Elrond chapter I got really wrapped up in it and flew through the rest of the book. :yes:

Hrm...I started reading Tolkien sometime during high school, (when the movies were still in theaters.) I wouldn't say that the movies were my only reason for picking up the book(s), though. My mother, who's been a fan for YEARS, talked about it off and on and also had some old illustrated calenders that I used to love ogling over. Plus, we have various copies of the books--in various states of decay--lying all about the house, so I had some clue. But as for the read itself, I wouldn't call it hard. I couldn't read it or any of the books in front of the teevee box...I still can't do that, but *meh*

As it happens, I'm re-reading FOTR right nowand it's STILL just like reading it for the first time. I'll always find some new way of interpreting a passage. (Same w/ the rest!)

I picked up Fellowship of the Ring after seeing the movie for the first time, not realizing there existed the prequel The Hobbit, and so I wasn't at all used to Tolkien's writing style and his pacing so it was very hard for me to get through it. I would try to read through two times, both of which I gave up reading for quite sometime when I reached the Council of Elrond chapter.

I saw the movie when i was about nine years old because my cousin said me it's great... I liked it very much and next year i bought the book!... Firstly it was very boring for me, especially the introducing of the hobits!!!!!! I read harry potter, and after i got used to reading books i read it again.... and then i understood everything, and when i finished it ... i was stunned, telling to anyone to read it.....

And then i became a tolkien fun :-D
