Post subject:  Coppermine

Hi :bye2:

I'm thinking of getting a Coppermine gallery to store all my stock photo's as there are too many to have as thumbnails on my site.

I was wondering if anyone out there uses Coppermine, if they could give me some hints and tips, and maybe tell me how I start etc.

Thanks a lot! :-)

I use a coppermine gallery for a fansite I run with a friend. I have absolutely no idea how to make a layout (I found a free one somewhere :P), but I could help you get it set up if you need some help. Once you have it all installed, it's actually quite easy to add pictures ;)

That would be great Gil, thanks. I don't think I'm going to be too worried about layouts yet though. ;)

I'm just not sure what to install and things like that, so any help would be great. :-)

The first step would be to download the script from the Coppermine website. Then you can look in the files and in the folder called 'docs', you'll find a README.html file that will help you with installing the gallery. Since I'm hosting you, I can tell you that coppermine will work with our webserver, so you don't need to check that :P

I guess I'll just wait until you start setting it up, and if you have any specific questions, just let me know :)

I'm going to have to be treated like a baby when it comes to this, I can tell. :duh:

When I click the "downloads" from all the options at the top, when I get there what is it I'm meant to download? As it looks as though there are various options. :guilty:

Do i need to move to a differnt host, as of the moment i am with Freewebs?

JF - No worries ;) I'd download the "Coppermine - 1.4.12 (stable)"

lady_E - yes, Freewebs will not support a Coppermine gallery ;) you will need a host that supports PHP, which freewebs does NOT

Right, I downloaded that now. :D

I make a new file like I did with CuteNews and upload everything to that folder yes?

yup :D but make sure you keep things in the correct folders ;)

for example, say you create a new folder called "coppermine" > upload all the files from the cpg144 folder that you downloaded directly into "coppermine", but when you downloaded the coppermine script, some of the files were in folders like "albums", "bridge", ect., so make sure when you upload them to your site, put them in the same folders so all the files in "albums" should be uploaded in a folder called "albums" inside the "coppermine" folder ;)

did that make any sense? lol I'm sorry if it's so messy and confusing...

here's a screenshot of what mine looks like in FTP:

I suck at explaining things. sorry :P

Ah, yes I think I see what you mean. ;)

There is an option when uploading to upload a "folder" rather than a file, and I chose that and it was creating seperate folders inside the coppermine file, I aborted though because I thought I might have been doing something wrong.

So I think if I do that again, it will sort them out for me, like you have above.

Do any of you two know what host would be best for me? www.beauty-in-the-broken.co.nr <--- Site that needs the gallery! Could i join the gallery onto that site, and use the host for the Gallery only?

well, really any host would work that supports PHP & can give you a MySQL database ;) but either you will have to get hosted by someone who already has a domain or you will have to buy hosting yourself ;) and yes, you would be able to connect your gallery to your site (just add a link or something ;))

Weeell... I finally found time to upload all the files and everything, and I have changed the permissons on the directories, like it said.

But it says now I need to create a MySQL database? And I'm not sure how I do that or if I already have one.

*scratches head*

JF - I'll need to create that database for you ;) I will email you about it though because it involves passwords :D
