I just finished rereading the section on Treebeard and the Ents. I really think they're fascinating! I especially love the description Tolkien gives their eyes. The deep green thoughtfulness, with a shaft of gold through them. I think that if I could meet any race in Middle Earth, I would meet the Ents. (well, right after the hobbits. Because hobbits are awesome like that. But it's more like I'd live with the hobbits and see the Ents.)

Who else loves Quickbeam? I mean, he's described as a young ent but he's gotta be what, like 5000? But he just likes to be happy with things. It makes me happy too. :teehee: He stands near the water, he laughs. He looks at the sun, he laughs. He's just so happy! I think it's nice to see that other picture of Ents rather than just the solemness that I feel from Treebeard.

And what do you think happened to the Entwives? Were they destroyed (since they lived in the Brown Lands)? Or did they go somewhere? Or did they go tree-ish? I wish we were told more of that.

I love the ents! They are so quirky and fascinating, and Tolkien writes of them with wonderful imagination. Whenever I read about Treebeard and the others, I get a real sense of what it would be like to live thousands and thousands of years, and all the memories that entails. For instance, one of my favorites quotes is by Treebeard, when he can't remember what a hill is called in the common tongue, and the hobbits remind him, he says, "Hill. Yes, that was it. But it is a hasty word for a thing that has stood here ever since this part of the world was shaped." It puts nature in a whole new perspective for me.

I find them really hard to imagine, though. I can never quite decide in my mind how humanish they look. Tolkien describes them in practically human terms, but of course they must be very treeish, too!

I agree, Nurr, Quickbeam is such a pleasure to read about. :D I think everyone should take a page from Quickbeam's book and get happiness from the little things.

As to the Entwives, I always thought they were destroyed when the Brown Lands were burnt, but that's such a depressing thought! It's much nicer to think they made their way to the Shire and are somehow a part of what makes it so green and beautiful. (Treebeard does say something about the Entwives sounding like they would have liked the Shire, doesn't he?)

Haha, right on!

I love the Ents. Can you imagine to have seen what they have seen? Quickbeam would have to be my favorite, such a merry disposition!

I think the Ents are really cool! Even more awesome in my imagination.

I think Treebeard is my favorite Ent though.

Only Eru knows. :teehee:

I personally think they were destroyed. After all, a clan of creatures big as an Ent can't keep themselves hidden for very long. It's possible, but not as likely as being destroyed, or, as you said, becoming 'tree-ish'.

I love ents. They are so...nature. And they have wise and years of living in their eyes and has this sloooow motion and words in strange ents language :p

I love especially the story about Ent-wives, its so moving and talks to me very muchly.

I think Treebeard is my favourite because of his words about Ent race and because he is oldest.

I LOVE the ents. They're so wise! I love how Treebeard and the Ents take their revenge on Saruman for murdering their brothers and sisters (thats how I see all trees). Anyway! I love how Legolas is so connected to them! See ya!!

Ents are great. I adore them mostly because of my pagan soul: I am devoted to nature and I would give my current life to live as one of them: ageless, connected with forests and trees, free.

They life is stable and they fear nothing, they only dream about ent-wives.

I love Ents! They are wise, old and never act before they think. I fell in love right after Treebeard appeared in the books. They are pure nature and they are body of the Fangorn.

I wish I could meet one of them ;)

The story behind the creation of the Ents is so beautiful. That Yavanna, despite her husband's joy at the dwarves being permitted to exist, sought to protect her own green and growing things, begged Eru to protect them in some way - thus, the shepherds of the trees were born. It's really quite a lovely one.

As far as the matter of entwives go, I seem to recollect that Tolkien himself never really determined if they lived or if he died. However, in one of his letters he felt that they had disappeared for good, because of Sauron's scorched earth policy during the War of the Last Alliance.

I, for my part, much prefer to imagine them as a part of the Shire, and all that makes it green and good and whole.
