How do you perceive them?

Ugly creatures :p

But Uruk-hai seem more organised and like in military. They are more loyal to Saruman than orc to Sauron, because they have sense of mission and orcs just are afraid of Dark Lord. And they want to releave their cruelty, thats too.

But I prefer orcs, they are less artificial ^^

I always felt bad for the orcs. They were all very afraid of Sauron and the Nazgul and some of them talked about what they would do when the war was over, and seemed towant to get the war done so they could leave and have thier own life.

During Halloween someone from my family is going to find an orc mask and scare me to death with it.

I just know it. /shudder/

Uruk-hai were military, as Cara said, orcs a bunch of violent creatures, that feared their master to death. I also am sorry for orcs. They were cruel yes, but Sauron was even more cruel. And they had hard life after defeat.

But maybe they deserved that :teehee:

Orcs were actually pitiful creatures that were defeated and don't have future. They were slaves of Dark Lord who tormented them as he tormented free nations.

But I don't feel sorry for them, which is - I hope - easy to understand :P I don't like cruelty on free.

The uruk-hai are the scariest orcs in Lotr. They're not stupid, but they keep Saruman as their boss, not Sauron, wich is kinda odd, 'cause Saruman keeps Sauron as his boss..

Does he really? I thought Saruman had his own designs of ruling Middle Earth once he gained possession of the ring.
I'll have to re-read the books again. It's been too long. But I'm sure the whole Saruman serving Sauron bit was a part of the PJ fanfic.

Well, that could be right. Or it is right.. at least Saruman was used to think Sauron as his boss. 'Cause, how else he could turn to the evil side?

I always considered Saruman thinking himself his own boss, which ultimately played into Sauron's hands and an uneasy truce & deal between the Uruks & the Mordor orcs when the two hobbits were being taken to Isengard.

I forget that! So.. Saruman was only admiring Sauron, and started to copy him, but never thought Sauron as his boss. But there was an alliance between Sauron and Saruman, right? And Sauron didn't like the alliance? So it wasn't an alliance then...? So it was a fake alliance made by Saruman to trick Sauron who knew that, but did not end the fake alliance?..

There was an uneasy alliance between the Uruks and the Mordor orcs that captured Pippin and Merry, probably because the Uruks would have won any fight that may have occurred between them. As for Saruman and Sauron themselves, there may have been some deal that a cunning Saruman made to give the ring to Sauron should it come to him just to keep Saurom appeased for a time. But I'm sure if Saruman had gained the Ring he would have tried to keep it and take on Sauron. (Hmm.... that would make an interesting 'what if' fanfic tale!) Anyway, this was always my interpretation of how I read it, which was well before the PJ fanfics came to be.

But there were some kind of alliance, right? Cause otherwise the second part of Lotr would not be called the two towers.

And if Saruman would have get the Ring, he would become the next Dark Lord of Middle-Earth, cause Sauron and Saruman were both maiar..? I mean, Sauron was maiar before he turned into Sauron, the right hand of Melkor.. So could the Ring transform maiar into a someone, who has the power of a valar, or a bit lesser creature?
P.S. If Melkor would randomly get the Ring, would he be as strong and powerful as Ilúvatar himself..?

As an aside, the two towers as they relate to the book title are Orthanc and Minas Morgul.

Of course Tolkien went through various combinations before arriving at these two [as his letters will show], but not only did he publish this answer in the first edition, he also drew a final cover illustration depicting these two towers.

So the text Tolkien approved for publication, text published in [a note at the end of] The Fellowship of the Ring, agrees with the final illustration from Tolkien (the illustration has since been published, but was not used by Tolkien's publisher for the first edition).

I pity the original orcs, as the Silmarillion suggests that they used to be Elves, taken and tortured beyond recognition. The orcs in the story are difficult, though. I want to pity them, because cruelty and pain is all they know, but at the same time, I can't. Their desirableness makes me shudder as I read about them, and their lack of conscience is terrifying. :hide:

The way I see it, both Sauron and Saruman were using each other to gain dominion of Middle Earth. Neither of them planned to keep the other after conquering the world. Sauron was going to use Saruman to take over Rohan, and Saruman was trying to sneak past Sauron by pretending to be friends with him. Sauron became aware of Saruman's treachery when the Uruk Hai went to Isengard with the hobbits instead of Mordor, which I think was the original plan. We see Sauron's awareness in the Palantir during his encounter with Pippin. It's kind of a complex "alliance."

Yes, Sauron and Saruman were both maiar, but I don't think the Ring could have turned Melkor into someone with Eru's power. That doesn't happen. If Melkor had the Ring, then the Valar would probably have come to help everyone out, but it would have been a good deal harder than the first time.
