What do you think about brothers? Do you find them alike? And who do you like more?

I like Faramir more. Boromir is a bit like his father, but only a bit. Denethor is soooooo mad! He almost killed his own son!!! >:( :'-(

Faramir had the wisdom of the Numenoreans while Boromir had the strength of the Numenoreans.
Brothers who loved each other much, but whose father had a decided preference.
I guess if it was put simply, Boromir was daddy's boy while Faramir was momma's boy.
Neither was "better" than the other, just different.

I was always hugefan of Faramir. Boromir was weker than his brother, because let the Ring to overpower him. And he cared moreabout fight, just foght for the reason. Raramir was more thinking man. He fought, and was brave but put more thoughts into his actions.

But I like them both ^^

I like them both, both have true human nature but Faramir deals with problems with more ease because he doesn't have that much of daddy issues. faramir seems to be flawless in what he does while Boromir lets his flaws go out and overtake him.

I've always liked Boromir more, but both men are great characters. I like how their family dynamic is portrayed, with Denethor preferring the elder, "stronger" Boromir, and Faramir having a more sensitive nature and being close to their mother.

My memory of their relationship and portrayals in the books and discrepancies from the films is hazy, but even from a film standpoint, I can see both men as being emotional and flawed. Boromir never wanted Faramir to be pushed aside for his own glory, but it couldn't be helped that his abilities as a captain and leader were greatly treasured by Gondor. Faramir, too, was respected by his men and people, but was always under the shadow of his brother. Denethor is a complicated character as well, and I think it's a little unfortunate that his role in the films was painted in a singularly darker light, but if you try to understand him, his psychology is still apparent and compelling. Putting aside the first child syndrome, he probably neglected Faramir because he reminded Denethor of his wife growing weak and eventually dying after his birth.

I find the brothers alike at the core, in their shared love for Gondor and desire to seek approval from their father, but no two men are entirely alike and it is their differences that make each of them respectable and attractive.

^ Well said!! They're the best brother bond I've even seen in a movie and I'm actually ashamed that I hated Boromir in the first place. When he died I was just like, "He got what he deserved!" I. Was. Terrible.

The point where I realized that Boromir was actually an amazing character was in that extended scene with Faramir and Boromir when they got Osgiliath back.. :'( It was sooo sad. I like them both, they're both amazing.

Thanks. Don't be ashamed, everyone has characters they eventually warm up to.

Oh, that is one of my favorite scenes, too! Great and necessary inclusion to show the bond between the brothers.

I've said it before, but Boromir's death scene is one of my favorite scenes in the entire trilogy. It was so poignant and well-done. Sean Bean's acting + Viggo = me in raptures.

These are my two favorite characters. Boromir is still my favorite but I like both. But I really like the relationship of the brothers, very well done.

I love both of these characters, but I like Faramir better. I like Boromir's strength and leadership qualities, but I think he was just a little too full of himself for me, like in council. It seemed like he had to be right otherwise nothing would work. I understand his motives like with the daddy issues and the ring corruption amd wanting to save Gondor, and all, but I see some human pride in him as well. It throws me off just a little when im trying to analyse him.

Faramir on the other hand is totally fine being in the background. He doesnt have to be the center of attention and be in all the super important strategy meetings.he just does his job to the best of his ability and does what he judges to be right. Because of his humility he was able to talk to Eowyn and help to heal her fully in the houses. He does a perfect job of offsetting her, it's beautiful!!! I love that part in the book SO much, o my word. I wish they had done more with it in the movie.

I LOVE their relationship as brothers though. They compliment each other beautifully. Boromir has strength and influence and leadership awesomeness, while Faramir is more the brains of the operation and makes sure all the details work out.

Side note, I was watching EE TTT the other day and I noticed that the brothers have the exact same laugh and I thought that was really funny and sweet. Just thought I would share that. :)

They are a really cool team!

I never noticed that. I heard a lot of people say that they cast the two roles perfectly because they do look like they could be related.

They certainly do look as though they could be brothers. I was impressed with the casting myself.

:annoyed2: In my mind's eye when I read the books (looks again at title of forum section), they had subtle, yet decided physical differences.

Faramir had a more 'Numenorean' intellectual character who loved the study of lore and history. He was an excellent soldier who preferred stealth. It was why he was the Captain of the Ithilien Rangers and the dream came to him. Boromir was more the 'Numenorean' soldier who delighted in strength and learned knowledge of strategy and tactics of war and battle. He too studied history, but more the great battles, and was a strong and wise Captain of the Army of Gondor. His stamina was greater than Faramir's, and his endurance was exceptional. These traits have me 'seeing' the brothers differently physically. Boromir looked more like and was favoured by his father Denethor II, and Faramir looked more like his mother Findulias of Dol Amroth.

Post subject:  Re: Boromir and Faramir

To put it bluntly, Faramir was wiser than his father Denethor, never mind Boromir. A kind of Aragorn Junior, having in common the tutelage of Gandalf. Boromir had been told in the Council of Elrond in no uncertain terms by the greatest opponents of Sauron at that time, later in Lórien too, that the Ring was E V I L !!! He still blew it, trying to take the Ring from Frodo. Faramir had not had this massive instruction, but had done some "research" on his own or under Gandalf's tutelage - and he let Frodo and Sam, with Gollum no less, leave Henneth Annûn. Now for a short detour to the movies: Viggo Mortensen, as PJ had him play Aragorn, would have made a passable book Faramir. I'm kind of flailing around for a fitting Aragorn, but Charles Bronson in "Once Upon A Time In The West", stretched to about 6'7", might fit.

Ooh! Aragorn Jr! I like that! :-) That's actually a really good description. They both have the same humility and discernment mixed with tenderness and a high heritage from Numenor. All these things to a greater degree to Aragorn than in Faramir, but that is mostly due to age. *Happy sigh* thank you for that Ganodolorin!
