The good [even though I believe he needs both sides]. I just can't help feeling sorry for him, and pitying him with the knowledge that he was once a normal, almost hobbit-like bieng. :(

I wouldn't say "which side of Gollum." I'd say "Gollum or Sméagol?"

Sméagol was a fine being. It was not until the ring came along that he became corrupt and even then, we can only blame the ring. I suppose we should pity both sides, because one side is the real Sméagol and one is the tempted....

I like Smeagol better. Gollum is corrupt and evil and terrible to Smeagol, but sometimes, Smeagol fights back. I think that being with Frodo helped Smeagol recover a little bit.

I always asked myself if it was Gollum or Smeagol who killed Deagol. Smeagol saw the ring and acted immediately, so, was it him or already Gollum?

That is also something I've always wondered about. It would seem likely that Gollum did it, because Smeagol wouldn't have killed Deagol just because of a ring I think, but on the other hand I don't know how Gollum could have been there so quickly...

"At once Gollum got us and began prancing about, like a whipped cur whose master has patted it. From that moment a change, which lasted for some time, came over him. He spoke with less hissing and whining, and he spoke to his companions direct, not to his precious self. He would cringe and flinch, if they stepped near him or made any sudden movement. He avoided the touch of their elven cloaks; but he was friednly, and indeed pitifully anxious to please. He would cackle with laughter and caper if any jest was made, or even if Frodo spoke kindly to him, and weep if he was rebuked."

I thought that was SO cute!

I like Smeagol,he's much nicer than Gollum, but at the same time, I like Gollum, coz i love bad guys.

I think it may have been Smeagol who actually killed Deagol, but it was the Ring that made him do it - he wasn't so much aware that he was doing it - all he wanted was the Ring. Dunno.

But how did the ring have such an influence on poor Smeagol, just by looking at it for a few seconds? Was the murderer already Gollum or still Smeagol? I am not sure..

I like smeagol, he's adorable!
And the ring can take hold of anyone in any amount of time. So I think it was Smeagol who killed Deagol, as much as I didn't like. Coz also, Smeagol was forever trying to convinve himself, and trying to justify it by saying it was his birthday. He like, regretted I thinkbut he didn't have a choice. I guesss the ring wanted smeagol to have it, not Deagol, so yeah. I dunno, I could be wrong, lol. I wouldn't trust my word. :D

I don't think so, because for example Bilbo killed nobody because of the ring... he actually was able to let it go although he had already had it for 60 years by that time..

I agree that Bilbo seemed less influenced by the power of the Ring. After all, Bilbo was not as driven by power as Gollum was. Even in his Hobbit days,Gollum always had mean intentions. When the Ring came to Gollum, it probably felt all the "evil potential" in him so that might be why Gollum became obsessed with the Ring so quickly.
I think that Smeagol killed Deagol, but under the influence of the Ring.
