Post subject:  Contests Suggestion

I think you may remember we had a discussion a while back saying we should have a thread were we can ask to start contests etc, so it's easier to keep track of them? And I think it was pretty much decided that restricting the amount of contests was a bad idea? Well I was thinking last night of another way to keep an eye on contests - as some of you may know there are quite a few out there that have to be taken up by other people..so...

How about we start a directory for the contests? It would be quite simple and enables people to see what contests are available and what stage they are in.

For instance people who wish to start a contest would post this:

Contest: Johnny Depp Banner & Avatar
Link: http://arwen-undomiel.com
Due Date:28th September
Voting: --------
End Date: --------
Awards: ----------

Then when the contest is over and the voting has begun, they post back with the information and it's all updated:

Contest: Johnny Depp Banner & Avatar
Link: [X]
Due Date: [X]
Voting: http://www.arwen-undomiel.com
End Date: 10th October
Awards: ----------

And then when the awards are put up it's updated again:

Contest: Johnny Depp Banner & Avatar
Link: [X]
Due Date: [X]
Voting: [X]
End Date: [X]
Awards: http://www.arwen-undomiel

Three days after the awards are put up, the contest info is deleted.

So basically, it will be easier for people to keep track of all the contests thay have entered and also it will make it easier for those of use who like to make sure contests are finished *cough*. If the contest starter is behind, and after one PM is still behind, then the contest can be continued by someone else. So it's not really for the purpose of asking to start a contest and being told "yes" or "no". So it should suit everyone.

:D

 Thanks Mrs. Gamgee. Well a conversation I had with Kit sort of inspired me and lying awake at 5 in the morning helps as well. ;)

I think it's a very good idea and would love to see it put into action. :D I just hope it doesn't get to cluttered too fast - tons of contests are created every day. If everything is kept in one stickied post, a mod may not be around to update it, and if it is posted in an individual post, it will get real cluttered real fast, and a mod would constantly have to go on 'clean up' deleting posts for finished contests.

But these are just a couple questions I have. :) It's a really good idea, once again, I'd love to see it in work!

Thank you. :-) Well, a stickied post is what I had in mind. And as it's not a thread for asking if it's Ok to start a contest (like the Club directory) it probably won't matter if each contest isn't added and updated every second. And it's up to a Mod if it's too be a Mod thread or whatever. I also hope the thread will be only for people who are going to start the contests seeing things like "That's a great idea for a contest" or "I'll have to join that", would really annoy me, as that's not what it's for. Whoever it is whose doing the thread would probably only have to post now and again to say "yes that, that and that contest have been added". So hopefully, it won't be cluttered full of pointless things. :-)

Yeah, that was what I was concerned about. If that can be kept under control then I'm all for it!

I think it's a brilliant idea.

Though some minor glitches about the actual thread, if a person were to host several different contests, would they post the information in their basic post or will there be several different posts for whatever contests they hold, both present and future?

Because if the thread opens, and suddenly people are starting to post their info, not everyone comes through with updating, not everyone even bothers posting, not everyone even keep track to what ever it is they're doing.

And once they're done with that contest --- do they delete the information from their post? Are they going to keep one post in the entire thread and then if other people go to search for a contest, do they look for the host's post?

Some valid points there Kit, I'll try and explain a bit more.

Well I think if they were planning on starting more than one contest at the same time (I actually have never seen anyone do that before, it's usually one at a time, and they wait until one has completely finished before they start another) they could post the info for the contests in one post, and then for each stage post back if, say the voting end date was the same. Otherwise each contest would have a seperate post detailing all the information.

Yes, that may be a problem, but I suppose it's a bit like the club directory - as long as you make people aware they need to post the info, the majority of them should do what is asked. For the few, that "slip the net" a reminder on the actual contest thread should sort that out.

No, I don't think that will be needed really. They can keep posting for each new contest/s and the old posts may as well stay as people will only be looking at the first post on the thread, as that will give them all the contests that are running. A bit like the club, people don't use the request thread to see what clubs are available, they use the directory.

My real hope is that people (and only the people) who are staring contests will post, as that should make it easy and simple to go through the thread to see what contests need to be added. :D

But if this is this case, the person who makes the first post will have to check new posts all of the time and update the list. There might be a delay if this is this case.

Well, the whole point is that it's easier for everyone to keep track of what contests are available and what contests they have entered. I don't know about other people, but I don't check the contests thread constantly so I think as long as people know that everyday the thread will be updated at least once, it will serve it purpose of being a thorough list of what's there. Contests aren't started everday, sometimes there won't be any, sometimes there wil be quite a few so as long as someone updates it daily, I can't see there being a problem. :-)

Well, with all things given, I don't see why we can't try it. If we have a problem, we'll think of something.

JF --- if you want, you can make a thread for it, and I'll sticky it.

Ok, thanks Kit. I'll try and make it as explicit as possible as people understand.

*glances at JF's sig*
*shudders*
The Dark Lord has risen.. and resides now in the Contest Section! lol

Good luck with the new thread JF, I hope it will help the contest threads that tends to be forgotten. It's a pity when people put time and work into entering a contest and it just sort of fades off...
But now you comitted yourself to update the thread everyday!! You can never go on holidays or take days off anymore!!
