Post subject:  Post symbols

This is quite a pointless question... but I just need help figuring out the obvious...

The symbols appearing for each post, what are the meanings of them?
I know the Sticky symbol and Locked. :)
I know there is a nice collection on the bottom of each page, but I can't see the difference on e.g. the New Posts symbol and the No New Posts symbol... There is a slight difference in color??

*sigh*

Yeah, I think 'new posts' thing is a tad lighter, brighter, whatever. But it's hard to see the difference o.o

Around each "page symbol" for "New Posts" there is a little white "glow". Around each *page symbol* for "No new posts" there is just the green on the button. Or at least thar's what it looks like to me. :P I've never really studied them before as I don't tend to use them. I go by when I post was last replied to.

Hmm.. I never look at the symbols either... but if they were logical I might start doing it...
*inspects symbols closely*
Umm... yeah, perhaps if I started paying more attention to it...
Thank you for trying to help me out

You just have to scroll down till the end of the forum's index page. There you'll find an explanation of all symbols at bottom left corner.
It should also appear at the various index pages of the single sections (e.g. the Dwimorberg, Suggestions and Comments Idex page).

I'm not sure that there is actually a difference between the two.

Image

Let's refer to this image here. =D It can found in every section of the forum but not every thread.

[01] New Posts with white trapezoid thing >> This one is pretty simple, it's basically a newly made topic that has not yet reached 20 posts and have just recently received a new post. This is indicated as having new posts because of the very brght light reflection on the top of the button. The white trapezoid just basically represents a blank piece of paper because it's a fairly fresh topic.

[02] New Posts [Popular] Heart shape >> This is basically the same thing as #01 except this goes with threads that have over 20 posts.

[03] New Posts [Locked] with lock >> The same thing as the first two, except in this topic you can't post anymore to. There's a new post in the topic but it's also been recently locked, which most likely, means a moderator posted about why it's locked and then locked it.

*** The above three are different from the three with NO new posts because the shine is only a bit brighter on the top of the button and the overall button is a grayer shade of green. You can also tell there's new posts from the fancy green arrow pointing to it besides the topic name if you don't want to strain your eyes to see the different in button color/shading.

[04] Greener button with blank paper >> Same as #1, but just no new posts. Sad.

[05] Greener button with dark heart shaped thing >> Same as #2 except sadder and getting abandoned.

[06] Greener button with lock >> Same as #3 but deserted and put away because the government holds it confidential. :p

[07] Button with severe I >> The world is coming to an end.

Or the mods have something important to announce that will pobably help you guys in future forum events. This button indicates the thread will never get pushed down, it stays at the very top of the section until it's un-announcified and filed away by 'last posted' date.

[08] Splat-goo button with severe question mark. Good, important or useful thread so that it doesn't get lost in the pages and no member can find it and review it's importancy. Usually stickies don't stay on top long.

=D Yay! Did I cover everything?

You certainly did, Kitoky, thank you very much. :notworthy:
And also the secret got revealed; the mods are secret agents for the government... always thought there was something sneaky 'bout ya! :)

And now I just need to figure out if these symbols are logic to an extent where my lazy self would start paying attention to them...
Kit almighty, do you use them and are they useful?

Now, the only ones that are a usable option for us is the locked, of course and the announcements and stickies. I, myself, have never used the announcements with the exception of maybe onces but I was posting under the A-U Moderators account at that time so it would be more official.

I've done several stickies on topics I think are useful to others, such as the Club Directory in the Club section, JF's Contest Directory in the Contest section and we have used them alot in the Your Life for importance information for members. :)

I think the are useful in the sense that people are more likely to pay attention to them, sans you Ea. Lol. They are more aware of them and they check it because it's on top and at least they read it over or skim it but they know it's there.

Thank you for the nicely elaborated answer. :-) However, my question deals more with the way they are useful when you (or others as well, as I'm curious as to whether people look at the symbols or not) check the threads. Do you look out for the whatwasthename... the heart shaped little symbol to see if there are any new posts?

I tend to look for the time and the person who posted last to see if there are any new posts in a thread...

Oh, I see. Well, I look more at the fancy arrow for the topics that have received new posts. Since the fancy arrow always does it for topics that have new posts whether or not it's announcements or stickies or a regular thread.

However, the buttons I don't pay any mind to really, it just really tells me if the topic is staying at the top or not and not able to be pushed down.

Fancy Arrow? I know of no such thing!! :P

I use the symbols Ea. I find them most useful to tell whether I should check the thread or not. Otherwise I'd spend lost of time looking through pages of stuff I'd read before, with nothing new in them!

*nodnod*
I think I might actually have payed sub-conscious attention to the symbols before I started focusing so much on them after starting this thread... I can usually tell which threads I should check for new posts... perhaps it's just an ability one develops here... :P

Aha I see it now, it really helps to see it with the black background ^_^

We all see the pointy arrow beside the topic name right? Or is that only for moddies?

^no, I see it too, that's what I use tot ell if there are new posts or not. :)
