In the User Control Panel Private messages section, there’s an item “Outbox” and an item “Sent messages”. What exactly is the difference between the two?

I believe (could be wrong) that your outbox only contains messages that you have "composed" so would not include replies to messages others have sent you first. The Sent mesages would include both. I think... but don't quote me on that.

When you compose and send a message to someone, it will appear in your 'outbox' until it is read by the recipient. I've sent messages that have sat in my outbox for eternity. When they are read, they go into your 'sent' box. It's a good way to tell if your message was read.

Yeah, something like that. If it's sent and read, it is in your 'Sent' mailbox. If it has been sent but not read, it's in your 'Outbox'.
