Hey everyone. :) I'm kinda new here (can you tell? :P) and I've been shy about posting in other topics, but I enjoy graphics, so I decided I would make a tutorial thread. I hope this helps, if it doesn't, please tell me. (I would hate to be clogging up to forum.) Thanks! :) Oh, and please post your results! I'd love to see them!

Tutorial #1 (for GIMP, but people who know their way around Photoshop should be able to use it too)

1. Create a canvas and make it the size of your choice. Mine is 1280x1024.
2. Choose your image(s). I will be using this one and this one. Paste them as new layers into your canvas.
3. Resize them to your choosing, making sure to stay in proportion (click the chain to do this).
4. Now to blend them together. Make sure the first picture is on top, then go to Layer>Mask>Add layer mask, and press OK.
5. Select the gradient tool. Make sure your FG & BG colors are black & white. Set the gradient to linear, FG to BG, and drag it across the first photo. It will start to blend it. Do this several times until you get a result you are pleased with. Note: Make sure the layer mask is selected. You can select it by going to the layers panel and clicking on the white box next to the first layer. (if that makes sense...)
6. Now to 'tie it together'. Flatten the image and go to Colors>Brightness-Contrast. I used 27 for Brightness and 46 for Contrast.
7. Duplicate your base layer and Desaturate the colors (Colors>Desaturate). Set the B&W layer mode to 'Hard Light' and put the opacity somewhere around 75.
8. Flatten your image again and create a new layer. Fill it with #d45b5e, set the layer mode to 'Divide', opacity to 30.
9. Grab this texture from Lost & Taken and resize it. Set the layer mode to 'Hard Light', opacity 15.
10. Create a new layer and set it to 'Overlay'. Go to you FG & BG colors and change it to:
FG:#00d8ff
BG:#ca5d88
Now drag the gradient tool across your graphic. It should create a nice coloring effect. If you don't like it, try again with different colors or layer modes.
11. Lastly for the text. I typed 'Arwen' in the font ' Jellyka - Nathaniel a Mystery' and put the size to 161, color #a3f4c7. I put the layer mode to 'Overlay' and added a drop shadow with the settings:
1
1
6
100
with the 'Allow resizing' box unchecked.
12. Almost done! Select your text layer and go 'Layer>Alpha to Selection'. Select your drop shadow layer and press 'cut'. Duplicate your text layer and lower the opacity to 50, and you're done!

My result:
http://tinyurl.com/cgz7ly4
It's not 1280x1024; it got resized while uploading.
