What? You called a tie? Lame-ish.
Anyway, didn't Achilles fight Hector? I don't remember Achilles fighting Hercules.

Pfft. I got no ideas from Ellie--I just wanted to know who he thought was better.
.....Tar, Tar, Tar. *sigh* Achilles didn't fight Hercules. Lol...EBM was saying that our debate was like a fight between them would be. lol....
As for a new topic, we can always discuss why the Dúnedain of Arnor would occasionally use spears if they're on foot most of the time, against others that are on foot. It doesn't seem as practical as a sword or bow to me.

I was gonna continue but i felt uninclined to start a new thread or to flood this club with a load of posts about 1 thing like that so, it was an essential thing. Still the debate was indeed epic. I was winning tho lol
Oh and achillles did fight hector but I meant what Aerandir meant.
I think that the dunedain will use spears as they can be used with both hands, can be used on horseback if their horse is nearby. Also, a spear is more expendable than a sword. Also, they have a greater reach and can be used as a quarterstaff as well as the greater potential for piercing armour.

How is a spear "more expendable" than a sword? I'm assuming that they weren't just tying sharpened rocks on the end, which means they probably would have had specially-forged spearheads, which still aren't really expendable.

A spearhead uses less steel than a blade and requires less refining compared as they are not expected to go through the kind of parrying and blade to blade contact that a sword will go through.
so comparitively it is. Also, a spear can be cast and also a spear could be used as a staff if the head was snapped off.

I missed alot If we're talking about weapons for the Rangers and the Dunedain, I believe they both used the same type of weapons: swords, knives, and bows.

Actually, Ellie, to all appearances, the Dúnedain of both Arnor and Gondor used basically the same type of sword--Boromir's was described as being of the same style as Andúril. So it's likely that they both (countries) used longswords.
However, since that was just a little side-comment, I think I should point out that spears aren't that great in a forested environment. And I still don't think of them as expendable, but it is understandable that some might use a spear instead of a bow, however impractical it seems.

Spears would, unless your hunting deer or orc.

Yes they would have had similarities in blade making, there were no scimitars after all lol
Spears are good for absorbing charges, for piercing very heavy armour or troll skins and also can double up as a walking staff. It depends on the situation. But also the dunedain will have used short bows ( maximum range 60 yards) to hunt for food in the wild.

Well, they might have had longer bows than that--we never know, because they aren't described in the book.

Aerandir, It makes sense the dunedain would use short bows. They would have needed to bring down prey, but not from great distances, as a longbow would be a bit restrictive in size. Also, aragorns bow that he carrried was not that big, with a maximum range of maybe 75 yards, so its safe to assume that some similarities may be there for the rest of the Dunedain.

Being honest, so had I . I just remembered mine and aerandirs discussion and took myself off to find where we had debated. I found it in the end.

I've always appreciated the Dunedain. I had been watching you and Aerindir's debate since the beginning, but never really had anything to say.
